    1. Re: [CAVE] James Wesley Berry & Susan Nancy Cave
    2. Hi Sue Ellen, I haven't had but one reply and that one just said that a lot of records disappeared during the war. I suspect the Cave families in Page County are all connected somehow. I have placed the following children as siblings of Nancy. There is no documentation that proves it but I can give you my reasons for the speculation. James Cave (b. 1814) m. Catherine Stanley James Cave, along with John the father of Nancy signed on her marriage bond. I'm thinking he would be the brother. They also both have sons named Newman. Simeon Cave (b. 1816) m. Lucinda Cave. Again, Simeon has a son Newman. In addition in the 1860 census you find John Cave, the father living with Simeon, which leaves the other John Cave m. to Elizabeth Aleshire out of the picture as his father. Elizabeth the mother is living with Nancy and her children. Phoebe Cave (b. 1818) married to David Burns. Her marriage bond lists her father as John Cave. Now, while it may be either of the John Cave's in Page County, the 1870 census shows Nancy and Wesley's daughter Harriet Susan living in the Burns household. Nancy of born 1820 has to be to this John Cave and Elizabeth because she is not living with Elizabeth Aleshire Cave as can be determined by the census. Newman W. Cave born 1822. I placed him in this family largely because of the name and no other reason. Too bad I haven't run across a will for this John Cave. Don't know if there is a DNA page for the Cave families. One interesting note is that one of the Berry descendants still in Clark County, Ohio remembers a story from his youth about a male relative that would come out from Virginia and visit. He said the stories would put him in the age bracket of Wesley, but he's just no where around that can be shown. I know Wesley's mother had land at one time in Nicholson Hollow. Her father, James Ward, bought 40 acres from William Berry (who had purchased the land from Shadrach Nicholson) in 1815. When Ward died in 1819, his wife inherited the land and later his daughter Margaret did. Margaret Ward Berry lived there until about 1839 when she in turn sold the land to John Nicholson. Another research puts the children of Margaret Ward Berry as being born in Culpeper County, but I'm thinking it was probably nearer to Nicholson Hollow. Her daughter Cassy married a Nicholson. Anyway, that's all I have to present on my Berry-Cave connections. The Berry DNA hasn't tied us to a line yet, so I'm hoping my cousin will submit to more markers. Sorry to hear about your friend. Companies are so impersonal nowadays, they don't seem to care a hoot about company loyalty. 3. Hi Anita, Have you had any response to this query you placed? I have printed it out and as I have time will do more review of all the information you mentioned. I have already reviewed the census and see what you are talking about on Nancys locations with some of the children in 1850 1860, etc. This has been a very puzzling family and I dont seem to have any thing of help for you right now. I do have the other John Cave of Page county at the time married to Elizabeth Heskill, 5 Nov 1811. That is no help to you, but I think he is listed as the son of John and Catherine Cave. Somewhere, I seem to recall a person with Simeon Cave and how they placed him in a family. I dont find that now. Also had some Berry Cave notes but most are the same as what you have found. That is so strange that you cannot locate Wesley Berry in any census or reports. I have lots of family that I dont find in one or two census but they appear in at least one census somewhere. And as you said Nancy seems to continue to have children by him "at regular intervals" I see some names that tie to the Dark Hollow CAVE family of James Cave, and other Dark Hollow families. There has been some folks placing James as a son of John and Catherine Cave, (my line) but others say he is a brother of Simeon who was not a son of our John and Catherine. Right now I feel Nancy was most likely a sister to this Simeon and James but I need to find those notes I have on this family. Some of my files are in storage, but I have a lot of the CAVE files with me and I will try to find time to go through them this week again. ......................... Oh a note about the signature you had on this email. "Remember The better you do, the more they expect!" I have a friend, Nancy, next door who gave & gave to company in Wichita, working 14 hr days, etc. doing everything they asked of her, and after 29 YEARS, the NEW younger boss came in one morning in January and said, "I want your desk cleared and you out of here by 4 p.m. today" NO WARNING, NO FEELINGS FOR HER YEARS OF DEDICATION TO THE FIRM" She is 60 yrs old and trying to find work. She is depressed and to top it off, since she had free time on her hands, she was painting the kitchen and stepped off the ladder wrong and broke three bones in her foot. Sees the doc Tuesday for pre-surgery on the foot. Best Wishes! Sue Ellen Cave Ash

Under a canopy of white marble, against the north wall of the chancel, is the effigy of a man ; also a Latin inscription, commemorative of Richard CAVE, eldest son of Sir Thomas and Lady Eleanor CAVE, who died on the Continent, in the nineteenth year of his age, July 26. 1606. Adjoining the above, within the communion rails, is a magnificent monument over an altar-tomb, on which are the effigies of a knight and his lady, and a Latin inscription indicates that this memorial was raised by an affectionate and disconsolate widow, to perpetuate the name of Sir Thomas CAVE, son of Roger CAVE and Margaret Cecil. He died Sept. 6, 1613. An epicedium, in elegiac verse, indecorously puns upon the name of Cave. In the middle aile, on an altar-tomb of white marble, are the figures of Sir Thomas Caie, and his lady Elizabeth ; and at the feet their six sons and eight daughters. He died Sept. 4, 1558. Several brasses and inscriptions on flatstones, are commemorative of other persons of the same family. Stanford Hall has already been described in Vol. IX. p.401.

Ellen was one of nine children of this couple and I have documented through marriage and wills, death records, supplemented by census these nine children. However, I am at a loss to find what every happened to Wesley and Nancy (the names they commonly used). James and Wesley were married in Page County, Virginia 24 December 1834. Her father is listed on the marriage record as John Cave, her mother as Elizabeth. I know there were two John Cave’s with wives names Elizabeth in Page County at the time. One John was married to Elizabeth Aleshire. I do not believe those were Nancy’s parents due to where she was in the 1850 & 1860 census. I have never found Wesley in any census. I only have his name from death and marriage records of children. There children are listed as follows: Frances Edna Berry born about 1835 married Francis Marion Cave in Page County 1 June 1854. She lists her parents as Wesley Berry & Nancy Cave. Ellen Narcissa Berry born 1839 in Page County. Married William Shelton Harris in Page County 3 April 1866. She lists her parents as Wesley Berry & Nancy Cave. Mary Elizabeth Berry born July 1843. She married Noah Andrews Meadows in Rockingham County 16 June 1867. She lists her parents as Wesley Berry & Nancy Cave. James Madison Berry born 12 August 1846 in Page County. He married Lucy Ann C. E. Harris 22 July 1868 in Rockingham County. His marriage record lists his parents as Wesley Berry and Nancy Cave. His death record states James Berry and Susan Cave, my first clue that Wesley and Nancy weren’t their full given names. Elizabeth F. Berry born about 1848, living with her mother (who is listed as Nancy under the surname of Cave) in the home of her grandparents John & Elizabeth Cave in the 1850 census for Page County. Susan Harriet Berry born September 1850, still living in Page County in 1900. She is shown living with her mother Nancy in the 1850 census detailed above. Adeline Berry born about 1853, is shown living with her mother in the household of her grandmother Elizabeth Cave in the 1860 census. John Cave is shown living in the household of Simeon Cave which makes me believe he is the brother of Nancy. Newman H. Berry born December 1857, living with his mother in the 1860 census. He married Elizabeth Weakley in 23 December 1877 in Madison County and lists his parents as Wesley & Nancy Berry. John W. Berry born 1859 and is living with his mother in the household of his grandmother in the 1860 census. He is living in the household of his sister Ellen, now Ellen Harris in the 1870 census in Rockingham County. His death record lists his father as James Harris. The only tie I have showing the parents of James Wesley Berry is the will of Margaret Ann (Peggy) Ward Berry who died in Page County in 1853. She does not list Wesley nor 8 of his children in the will, but does list granddaughter Frances Edna Berry. When the estate is disbursed Frances’ share is paid to her husband Francis Marion Cave. Why isn’t James or the other children mentioned in the will? One researcher suggests Frances was his only child and he died before his mother. Something I feel is incorrect given the fact she lists the heirs of son Lawson Berry who died before her and the fact that all nine of Wesley’s children, especially two of those born after Margaret Ward Berry’s death can be linked to him through some type of documentation. Wesley cannot be found in any census, only listed on marriage and death records. Nancy isn’t found after the 1860 census. What happened to Wesley & Nancy? Why wasn’t he listed in his mother’s will? Why is his wife always living with her parents? Children appear at regular intervals, so he must be around. Can anyone help? This family appears in Page, Rockingham and Madison Counties. E.W.Wallace The Library of Virginia is pleased to announce the completion of the Legislative Petitions Database. Over 25,000 petitions were entered into the database between 2001 and 2007 and are available to search through the Library of Virginia's website at http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/gov/petitions/. Petitions to the General Assembly were the primary catalyst for legislation in the Commonwealth from 1776 until 1865. Public improvements, military claims, divorce, manumission of slaves, division of counties, incorporation of towns, religious freedom, and taxation were just some of the concerns expressed in these petitions. The petitions often contain hundreds of signatures and are a useful tool in genealogical research. Frequently, the petitions contain supplementary support documents useful in research, including maps, wills, naturalizations, deeds, resolutions, affidavits, judgments, and other items. **************It's Tax Time! THOMAS CAVE is of opinion that the labour-rate in the parish of Thorney Abbey has not been productive of any good ; that it has been the cause of increasing the wages of the labourers during the time of its operation, and of rendering them less dependent upon their own good conduct and good character as a means of procuring or continuing in employment than formerly ; and he thinks every farmer ought to be at liberty to employ what number of labourers he himself may consider necessary, without any rate or other compulsory means. It keeps every parishioner in employing his own poor. The labour-rate causes parishioners to be careful how settlements are made ; thereby the parish is less likely to be burthened with strange poor. The labour-rate causes the farmer to employ more hands in the winter than he otherwise would do, and therefore keeps his poor from the general scale of allowance on the parish, whilst the farmer has labour for his money : thus may the labour-rate be considered of some good to the farmer. The labour-rate presses heavily on the farmer in the following manner: that supposing the farmer's rent to be 400/. per annum, his poor-rate is laid upon the rent in proportion; whilst the trader, whose rent may be only GO/, or 80/., and whose profits upon his rent is generally very far above the farmer's, pays his rate upon the rent as stated above; the labour-rate, therefore, is chiefly borne by the farmer, and is thus far highly injurious, and cannot do good. ------------------------------------------------------ http://books.google.com/books?id=D-8NAAAAQAAJ&pg=PA298 Lincolnshire - Kelly's Directory pub 1885 Baston: CAVE, William - farmer, Fen - pg 298 Brigg: CAVE, Henry Haddon - chairman of the Local Board - pg 336 Gainsborough: CAVE, Peter - butcher, 96 Bridge street - pg 408 . An 80 year-old farmer, Joseph CAVE of South Vienna, Route 1, was gored to death by a bull Tuesday as he was on his way to evening chores. His farm is one the Houston rd. near the Old Columbus rd. Miss Anna CAVE, a daughter who lived with him, said she heard Mr. CAVE yell for help from the barnyard. She went to the door of the house, and her cries scared the bull away. Her screams then attracted neighbors living a short distance away, and they carried Mr. CAVE out of the barnyard. They thought he was still living, and a call was put in for Lukens ambulance in London, O. When the ambulance arrived, however, Mr. CAVE had died. The goring occurred about 5:15 p.m. Mr. CAVE suffered a crushed chest, and several cuts on the body from the bull's horns. Although there were no eyewitnesses, apparently Mr. CAVE was thrown up into the air by the bull. One cut was between the legs. The barnyard is about 75 feet away from the house. Mrs. CAVE was born in Pike County, April5, 1869, the son of James and Johanna HAUBOLDT CAVE. His wife, Elizabeth Potts CAVE, died April 12, 1935. Besides the daughter at home, he is survived by another daughter, Mrs. Blanche YEAZELL, South Vienna, Route 1: one son, Boisle CAVE, also of Route 1; one grandson, William CAVE, Springfield; one sister, Mrs. Anna HAYES, Mechanicsburg, and two great-grandchildren. The body was taken to Littleton funeral home and will be removed to the residence Thursday morning, remaining there until Friday morning before being returned to the funeral home for services at 2 p.m. Friday, the Rev. W. S. Alexander, pastor of the South Vienna Congregational Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://books.google.com/books?id=DjYPAAAAYAAJ&pg=RA1-PA20 Geology and Industrial Resources of California by Philip T.
