I have a picture of their gravestone somewhere also. I know a little more about the Cave line than the Sturdevant. Holsea (or Halsea) Cave was born in England and came to America about 1831-32. We think he died in Mina Corners. Samuel Cave was born in 1811 in Reading, Berkshire, England and died in Waverly, Iowa on 25 Dec 1873. He moved to Iowa in 1854. My cousin Howard Cave Mikesell got some information from England I'm sure he would share with you on Holsea. I'll get his email address for you. Halsea married Mary Titchener. Maybe Howard will send you a copy of his "Descendants of Halsea Cave" It is pretty complete! Well, this is a start. I'll get back with you another time. We will get back to the Sturdevant line again. Thanks for the long information. I will compare it with what I have. I am trying to get the actual proofs of the Studevants so I can file my application to Colonial Dames. I already have DAR Supplements on Caleb and James Sr. Sturdevant. Are you a member of DAR or are you interested. I would be glad to help you complete your application. Let me know. Thanks again. He was born in Reading, Berkshire, England in the year 1811; came to the United States when twenty one years old, to Iowa in 1854. He was one of the oldest and most respected citizens; a genial, steadfast, christian friend. One who has know him long and well says, "Mr. Cave was a faultless man, a sincere, cheerful and unswerving christian." Such a sentiment is honorable to the dead.......hororable to the living. I have only to state this, and it merits the hearty response of all who knew him....may the mantle of the man who was neighbor to all and a patient christian fall on his sons; may his neighbors come forward and fill the broken ranks; and the life so honorable among men will not have been in vain. Sturdevant Dear Marian, Just a brief reply, with more to follow as time permits. When we were in Waverly last weekend, we met Kathy (Cave) Kahler, who is a daughter of Earl Cave and descendant of Samuel and Emeline (Sturdevant) Cave. She also introduced us to her children and grandchildren. All the descendants in Waverly are extremely interested in participating in the "Ira Sturdevant house" project, and we hope others, like yourself, who live elsewhere will be equally supportive. I will be happy to exchange family history with everyone but, frankly, at the present moment, Kathy and I are devoting all our spare time, energy, and money to restoring Ira's house. We hope you and others will also contribute through the IHPA. Please stay in contact, and watch for updates. Life gets in the way of my research sometimes and its been a while since I've been on this site. I have been concentratiing on finding my Aussie relatives in Sydney New south Wales and found my direct cousins, who have Emma Cave-Brown(e)-Cave as their GG Mother, just like me. In 2004 I went to Stanford Hall in Lutterworth Leicester, one of our family homes, where My GG mother Emma used to visit her cousins. I was absolutely blown away by the experience. We had a reunion of about 60 Caves, and extended family. My cousin Theresa Goss came from Vancouver, and also my cousin Sarah Chanin from Devon in England. The only light I can shed on the family connection is that one of the Cave brothers went to London in about the 1700s and married the daughter of the Mayor of London, whose surname was Brown(e), and they also married into the Verney family, of the Braye baroncy. Debretts and Burkes say how later the descendents added the names together, making Cave-Brown(e)-Cave. The brothers took these names. I have reached a stalemate regarding my gg mothers family in Dorset. I have to get hold of the birth & marriage CTS. Hope to hear from you. Yes i have all the info from Debretts and Burkes, but still do not have the connection. Julie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He had children Joseph A., Henry Clay and Cynthia E. I have a photo of some unidentified people that has written on the back "Cave family in Canada". My great-grandparents are in the photo and they lived in Nebraska at the time. Do you think there could be a connection? I would be happy to share the photo. I don't know if this information will be helpful. Nothing seems to jive right now, but I'll print and hold on to it. One never knows. Sounds as if our Henry, and his sons Daniel and Thomas came to the USA in the early 1870s. Settled in Western Pennsylvania and worked in the 'blast furnaces' ... I appreciate your prompt reply.
