Hello I'm wondering if I can try to prove this to anyone yet. Cleta Irene Caves, daughter of Martie W. Caves and Beulah Estella Simmons married Donald Clarence Rogers of Yates City, having son me. (Donald, Cleta and Thomas still living). Martie W. Caves married Beulah Estella Simmons in 1915 in Knox County Illinois, with such marriage license showing his parents as Merit Cave and Jennie Swisher. Martie W. Caves listed himself as being 22 on the marriage license, having been born in Pine Bluff Arkansas. Martie W. Caves has not been found in any records of Pine Bluff Arkansas to this date, of having been born there. Martie W. Caves buried in Abington Cemetery, Abington Illinois, dates on stone 1890 - 1954. It is known that Martie W. Caves had one natural sister named Donna Mae Caves who died and is buried in Ottomwa Iowa. He also had a brother named Bert Caves who was a river boat gambler and resided in Havanna Illinois, having at least one, possibly two daughters that went to California to get into the Motion Picture Industry. Martie W. Caves is found in the 1900 Census residing with his grandfather Absolum S. Swisher and his step grandmother Mellisa. Martie is listed as having been born in March of 1888. 1900 Census Illinois: Page 76 ED 105 Sheet 2 Swisher, Absolum S. Merit Cave married Jennie Swisher, "believed to be the daughter of Absolum S. Swisher, on October 16, 1877 in Brown County, Illinois according to their marriage license. "No parents listed on marriagel license, went back for a copy, and they could not locate license at all". At the Mt. Sterling Court House of Brown County, Illinois, a birth was found listing Merit Cave and Jennie Swisher as parents, recorded on 12/23/1880. This Birth, took place on November 17, 1880, Cert. #815, found on Bk 1 Page 68. This birth did not list a first name, although at the time, I was unable to obtain a copy of the birth certificate. Merit Cave then shows up next in the Missouri Census Records below: 1880 Census, for Missouri Examined: Merritt Cave, age 25, born in Missouri, White, as listed in 1880 Census Residing with wife Jenny, born in Virginia, Child, Charles A. No documents verify or prove this is the right Merit Cave who married Jennie Swisher on October 16, 1877 in Brown County, Illinois. Merit H. Cave of St. Clair Co. There are many Cave/Caves of Missouri/Illinois area that have not been researched or are unidentified. Is this the missing family? What is known is why Merit Cave and his sister Josephine are residing with Charles Ashworth in 1860. Is this the Merit Cave that died in a Forest Fire in the Mark Twain National Forrest, as per a family legend passed down, leaving his son Merit and his sister to be raised by his sister and her husband Charles Ashworth? John M. Elkins J P Filed for record February the 5th 1857 James M. Beck Recorder Lewis Richard Ashworth was a plantation and slave owner and later a teacher and preacher. It is said that he was shot by the Kansas Red Legs because he would not tell where his sons were, while living in Osceola, Mo. At the time of his death, ca. 1865, his family was close together, but after the Civil War and between 1866-1870, the children in this family seemed to scatter and lived with other families. Also, it seems possible that the first nine or more children (13 in all) had three given names. While living in Virginia this family was using one particular given name and continued to use it up to 1865 or 1870. After this it seems the entire family started using a different given name. This is showing up in documents, census records and just recently (1988) descendants of Lewis Richard Ashworth. The story about Lewis and the Kansas Red Legs, has not been proven as of yet, but it is still being worked on. This family has been extremely hard to research, as they do not want to stay in one place. What may be of interest to you, Lewis and family left Va. between 1838 & 1840 going to Rives Co., Mo.(which became Henry Co., Mo. 10/15/1841) and later his location fell within the boundaries of St. Clair Co., Mo. Lewis and family were in Monegan Township, Rives Co., in 1840. He is also noted, without moving, as being one of the early settlers in Cedar Co., Mo. which was formed from Dade Co & St. Clair Co., in 1845. Charles married Martha Ann Cave and they had at least one child-Sarah C. Josephine and Merit and Martha Ann Cave - seems to me to be brothers/sisters. The above Records are from the actual Census Records on Microfilm and read by me. I will get back to you after I look into a few other things about this family. Forget the 1850 Census Record-we do not need it! On August 15, 1860 the Census Taker was at the home of Charles F. Ashworth (age 22, born Va., a laborer with a personal estate value of $50) and Martha Ann Ashworth (Wife of Charles) (age 18, born Mo., Can not read or write). Charles and Martha Ann were married on the 23rd day of Nov., 1856. In 1859, they had a daughter and named her Sarah C. Ashworth. (On the day the Census Taker was at their home she was listed at 10 months old, born in Mo.). Also, living with Charles and Martha Ann and Sarah C. Ashworth on August 15, 1860, was Josephine Cave (age 13, born Mo., and in school.) She was a sister to Martha Ann (Cave) Ashworth. Also, living with Charles and Martha Ann and Sarah C. Ashworth on August 15, 1860, was Merit Cave (age 8, born Mo., and in school). He was a brother to Martha Ann (Cave) Ashworth. Where did the name Merit Cave come from? Here is the link, although not yet proven, may hold the answer. Mary, or Polly or Mary Polly Merit born 1758 married Ezekiel Haydon (Haden) on or about 1776 in Kentucky. Ezekiel Haydon was born July 1753 in Spotsylvannia Virginia and Polly Merit was born 1758 in Virginia. Their daughter Charity (or Catherine) Haydon was born December 29, 1781 in Spotsylvannia Virginia (Some have her being born in 1765). She married Reuben Cave born 1780 died 1833 or 1825 son of Richard Cave and Elizabeth Craig, in Columbia Boone County, Kentucky Reuben Cave and Polly Haydon's sixth child was named Merit Cave who was born abt 1812 or 1819. (Is this the Merrit H. Cave that married Catherine Rush, daughter of Garland Rush, on June 21, 1835 in Monroe County?) Who are the yet unknown parents of Richard Cave who married Elizabeth Craig? So, after reviewing all the above information, a huge amount of holes exist in being able to prove this heritage and or to find descendants of this line. I greatly appreciate all of the assistance many of you have provided to get me this far. If you have or find any other information relating to this difficult to research line, please contact me privately. I'm not yet a subscriber to all the lists I sent this to. Thomas W. Rogers P. O. Hello Reuben Cave who married Catherine or Charity Haydon (Haden) abt 1797 in Kentucky had their sixth child named Merit Cave. Children of Garland Rush and Anna McClain are: 42 i. Catherine (Kitty)4 Rush, died Unknown. She married Merit H. Cave June 21, 1835 in Monroe County, Missouri; died Unknown. Notes for Catherine (Kitty) Rush: >From Barbara Rush Jenkins, Goshen, Ohio in an e-mail sent to me on August 25, 1998: "The Affidavit of Gabriel Rush and Daniel Hendricks dated August 29, 1828 regarding the estate of John Rush, mentions Kitty as one of Garland's children. The settlement also mentions schooling for a "Catherine" and "Elizabeth." At this time, I believe that the "Catherine" and "Kitty" are one and the same person. (She may be the Catherine who married Merit H. Cave on June 21, 1835.) Documents from the Missouri Court dated February Term 1832 confirms that Betsy Rush Hawkins and Kitty and Margaret were the children of Garland. Documents also filed with the court in 1838 show that the land was sold by the heirs. These heirs being specifically named and their relationships to John Rush, therefore proving the married children of Garland Rush." Bryan Station and Scott Countians Collins History of Kentucky states that Bryan, or Bryant, Station "was about five miles northeast of Lexington, on the southern bank of the north fork of Elkhorn; settled by the Bryans in 1779, but a cabin had been built by Joseph Bryan, a son-in-law of Col. Daniel Boone, in 1776." The history of Bryan Station included a number of Indian attacks. Hays was wounded in the neck & came near falling from his horse, but escaped. Hello Have you researched the Spotsylvania Virginia Cave - Caves? Ever run into Reuben Cave born 1780 died 1833 who married Charity Haydon born December 29, 1781? I'm told their first child was a Richard Cave, Jr. born abt 1799. Now, what I am now wondering is if this Reuben Cave was actually Richard Reuben Cave born 1780? What do you think? Ever run into a Richard Cave born 1780 in Spotsylvannia Virginia? Thomas
Hello I've been doing a lot of online research today, and going over some material that was sent to me by snail mail. I got to thinking that so many are helping me and have helped me, that I'd like to return the favor. So far, over the past years, as I have tried to find this line, I've built a very large database of Cave/Caves family lines. To give you some idea on it's size, there are 108 individuals first names starting with the letter "A" in the Cave file alone. There are litterally 1,000's of individuals with that have the last name Cave or Caves in the database. In all that, somewhere, my lost Cave line connects. But, if you send me a name, dates, locations, I'll see what is here that I can send you. And again, thanks for all you have done to help me. I've gotten a lot closer thanks to you. Thomas W. Rogers

Thanks to (Jane Heard), she writes: "While surfing I also found a Haydon lineage that has Ezekiel Haydon marrying Polly Merit. Their daughter, Charity "Katy" Haydon married Reuben Cave and their #6 child was Merit Cave. Don't know if you had this info or not, but I'm enclosing it along with other pages from the internet." Now, does anyone know this Reuben Cave and his family? Locations, dates, names, anything....that might help us know which of the Merit Cave individuals this is. Thomas

Hello Well, here is a Brick layer, M. H. Cave, age 41 in the 1860 Census. Could this be the elusive Meritt H. Cave who married Catherine Rush, and parents of my Merit H. Cave born in 1852? Hello Have you done any research on the Cave families of Monroe County Missouri? Tom
Merrot Cave married Fannie Geary on June 23, 1872 in Pettis County, Missouri Merritt H. Cave married Jennie Swisher October 16, 1877 in Brown County Illinois He is found residing in Butler and St. Clair County Missouri in the 1860 and 1880 Census. Meritt H. Cave married Mary Ann Earles on May 14, 1861 in St. Clair County, Missouri. (The Merrit H. Cave who married Jennie Swisher would have only been about 11 in 1861, so was it his father who may have remarried?) Merritt H. Cave married Catherine Rush b 1817, on June 21, 1835 in Monroe County Missouri. Are these the parents of Meritt H. Cave who married Jennie Swisher, and who may have remarried to Mary Ann Earles in 1861?) Merit Cave married Mary Ann Duncan on March 18, 1874 in Hickory County Missouri Here is the problem. The Meritt H. Cave who married Jennie Swisher in Brown County in 1877 can not help me find their parents. The original marriage certificate is not at the Court House, but is only found in the marriage record books. The Census of 1860 and 1880 of Butler County and St. Clair County Missouri leads me to believe that Merritt H. Cave who married Catherine Rush are the parents of Merit H. Cave who married Jennie Swisher. But that leaves me with the huge question about all these Merit Cave individuals who married within that time period. So what I am hoping and praying for is that somebody on the lists has researched this area of Missouri and might have some bit of missing information that will help me. If you have a missing link to a Cave family line in the Midwest, you might very well find it within this area. Thomas
Notes: Martie Caves mother is said to have remarried a "Swisher" from Pekin Illinois. However, on Martie Caves' Marriage License in 1915, he listed his mother as being Jennie Swisher. It was also known that she and her husband owned an Insurance Company, called after them, "Swisher Insurance Agency" in Pekin Illinois. Nothing else is known, and it is not known, as of March of 1999, if Sarah is her correct name. Efforts are and will continue to be made to learn more about her and her ancestors. Phone calls to all the Swishers in the Peoria and Tazewell County Illinois area's seem to lead nowhere. Jennie, wife of Merritt Cave(s) was born in Virginia. According to the 1880 Census of Missouri: Found on December 16, 1999, by Thomas W. Rogers, Jenny, wife of Merritt, was born in Virginia. Merritt Cave, age 25, born Missouri, White Jennie, wife, born in Virginia Children: Chales A. Cave, age 2, born in Illinois Location: Butler County, Black River, Vol 4, ED 4, page 5, line 20 According to teh 1860 Census of Missouri, Found on December 16, 1999, by Thomas W. Rogers: Josephine, born Missouri, age 13 Merritt, born Missouri, age 8 Speedwell Twp, Pg, 974 - 104 Line 17 Enumerated with Charles F. Ashworth, age 22, Born Virginia Thomas W. Rogers, said that a Mr. Swisher came to visit his mother Cleta Rogers on Polk Street in Morton Illinois and asked if she was Martie Caves' daughter. This Swisher said that his mother had been married to a Caves before she married his father. In March of 1999, Thomas W. Rogers and his father Donald C. Rogers went to the Tazewell County Court House and the Pekin Library, but found no information that could lead them to find more information about her or any of her family. A trip down south into the Campoint Illinois area, and Mt. Sterling and Clayton Illinois area's, but only one name might prove some relationship to Jennie. That was a Bert Swisher who resided in Campoint, Illinois. Thomas W. Rogers, on the trip, with his father and son, in June of 1999, talked with a man who had known Bert Swisher, but had no idea of who his kin was, but this Bert Swisher may have very well been Martie Caves half brother. But up to this point, it was mere speculation, in Thomas W. Rogers' research efforts. Continued intense effort has been made to locate the Swisher Family Connections to the Caves. In a conversation between Alan Caves and Thomas William Rogers on the 8th of Sept., 1999, Alan stated that Jenny Swisher had owned and operated a restaurant in Clayton or Camp Point Illinois. Alan further stated that after Merritt Caves had died, the family had moved to the Swisher family farm, near a small town on a four corners, outside of Mt. Sterling Illinois. Alan said that his father Ernie had business in Quincy, and would stop there from time to time. In later years, Ernie married Wanda, who's family was also from Camp Point Illinois. After Wanda's parents had passed away, Ernie had went down and liquidated a meat locker and gave or sold it to Jennie Swisher or a friend of the family at the restuarant. Alan also stated that the Swisher Family Farm was near the Stockyards, outside of Mt. Sterling Illinois, in a small town on a four corners. The following information was taken from the Rock Island Illinois Marriage Index Part III 1885-1900. Page 203 Frank L. Swisher married Lulu M. Hollister on March 9, 1892 Roy M. Swisher married Jennie L. Ranson on December 8, 1897 William B. Swisher married Cora Belle Thornton on July 16, 1896 Jennie Swisher's family heritage is of the Swisher's of Pennsylvannia lineage, but yet is to be found as to her parents information. Information above has yet to be examined as being validly connecting, which was taken from the Rock Island Illinois Marriage Index Part III 1905-1900. Buried in Quincy, but have yet to verify if this is the same Jennie Swisher who married Meritt H. Cave. Cleta Irene Caves, grand-daughter of Jennie Swisher stated that she believed Jennie died sometime prior to 1917.
Meritt H. Cave m Catherine Rush Notes: Unverified Connection Note: This Merit Cave, believed born in Kentucky may be our ancestor, but documentation to prove this as correct must yet be located. However, it is not known whether or not Merit H. Cave and Catherine Rush is the parent of our Merritt Cave or the grandparent. Further research is required to verify this information. In conversations with Ernest Eugene Caves of Galesburg, who resided at 927 E. Knox Street in Galesburg, Illinois for many years, Ernest Caves was the descendant of "William the Concqueor" and "Daniel de Cave" (possibly "Allen de Cave" of France. It may be possible to examine the old lines of Cave and Caves families who have traced there lines back to one or both of these ancestors, to locate information that leads us down to our Martie Caves who Married Beulah Simmons on September 15, 1915 in Knox County, Illinois. As written by Thomas William Rogers December 1, 1999 On December 13, 1999, Thomas W. Rogers proved that what Ernest Caves told him was in fact found on line and was obtaining a copy of that line of information. Additional findings: Descendants of Thomas Rush of Virginia 6. (Pendleton County, Kentucky Order Book D, p.74. From James C. Moule, Washington, D.C.) >From Barbara Rush Jenkins, Goshen, Ohio in an e-mail sent to me on August 25, 1998: "The 1816 Delinquent Tax List lists Garland Rush as having moved to Campbell County, Kentucky, however, Garland and Anna both died in Pendleton County, Kentucky. Both of their estates are probated in that county. The children of Garland and Anna either went to Marion County with John Rush, or were taken later with Gabriel Rush. However, I believe that the children lived with John. His estate settlement shows that bills were submitted in regards to their schooling and medical case. After the death of John Rush, Charles L. Turner was made guardian to the children of Garland and Anna. Kentucky court papers of Anna Rush's estate records the name of Ethelinda "daughter of Anna;" no other information has been found regarding this child. I suspect that she either died or had another name that she went by later....Unable to find Garland's children on the 1830 census. John had died by then and Martha cannot be found on that census." Children of Garland Rush and Anna McClain are: 42 i. These heirs being specifically named and their relationships to John Rush, therefore proving the married children of Garland Rush." He married Susannah Miller August 11, 1814 in Pendleton County, Kentucky60. She was born February 16, 179761, and died Bef. 1850. Notes for David Rush: David Rush appears to have travelled with John Rush in 1819 to Missouri, even though there were two out of state land transactions; the first coming on February 20, 1823 where David's brother, Thornton Rush from Pendleton County, Kentucky, was handling the sale of David's land he inherited from his late father-in-law in Kentucky (Barton Manuscript). The second came on March 25, 1825 when David Rush sold 106 acres on Grassy Creek in Pendleton County, Kentucky. In Missouri, David Rush owned the southeast 1/4 of section 12, township 57, range 5; 160 acres, and the northwest 1/4 of section 12, township 57, range 5; 80 acres. John Rush's will in 1828 mentions David's two sons as John and William. Notes for Susannah Miller: The following information comes from Barbara Rush Jenkins, Goshen, Ohio in a letter sent to me on April 27, 1998: "Susannah married David Rush in 1814 in Pendleton County, Kentucky. She was an original organizer of the Bear Creek Baptist Church which formed on August 5, 1821 in Marion County, Missouri. (According to Dorothy Maupin Shaffett she was the sister of Samuel Miller.) After David's death, she married Thomas Lizenby in 1831. The 1840 census shows the Lizenby family with: one male under 5 (A.M. Lizenby), one male 10-15 (maybe William Marion Rush), one male 15-20 (maybe John A. Rush), and one male 40-50 (Thomas Lizenby). Two females 5-10 (unknown), one female 40-50 (Susannah). John A. Rush and Sarah Merand Marks were married on February 15, 1842, but she has returned to live with her father and A.M. Lizenby on the 1850 census. It would seem that John A. Rush, Thomas and Susannah Lizenby, and the two young females listed on the 1850 census were all dead by 1850. Biography of George Marks proves the relationship of Sarah Merand Marks and John Rush." More About Susannah Miller: Fact 1: Living in Missouri in 1823.62 More About David Rush and Susannah Miller: Marriage: August 11, 1814, Pendleton County, Kentucky63 Children of David Rush and Susannah Miller are: 46 i. Notes for Sarah Merand Marks: >From Barbara Rush Jenkins, Goshen, Ohio in an e-mail message sent to me on April 11, 1998: "On the 1850 census, she (Sarah Marks) is living with George and Mahala Marks, probably her parents, and A. M. Lizenby who was 11 years old. A. M. Lizenby was probably a child of the marriage of Susannah Miller Rush and Thomas Lizenby. I think that Susannah, her husband Thomas Lizenby, and her son John Andrew all died before 1850. (I looked and could not find Susannah or Thomas Lizenby on the 1850 census, and that is how I found Sarah M. Rush and the Marks family.) I think that Sarah took her half brother-in-law home to her parents, because there was no where else to go." Susan Rush, died Unknown. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Subj: Thomas Rush of Virginia Date: 7/14/00 4:26:38 PM Central Daylight Time From: Travelback4u To: dlpaal@juno.com Hello there: I just finished up revisiting your site and information on the descendants of Thomas Rush of Virginia. What I have been researching for over two years, is a Merit Cave who resided in St. Clair County Missouri in 1860 Census. In St. Clair County, Missouri, there is a marriage of Merritt H. Cave to a Mary Earles in 1861. The Cave family members that I am researching include a Merit Cave, age 8, in the St. Clair County Missouri 1860 Census. Now, what I am suspecting is this. Your Merrit H. Cave married Catherine (Kitty) Rush June 21, 1835 in Monroe County, Missouri, as shown in your information. I found a Merrot Cave marrying a Fannie Geary on June 23, 1872 in Monroe County Missouri. I also found a Merritt H. Cave marrying a Mary Earles on May 14, 1861 in St. Clair County, Missouri. Now, my great grandfather, Merritt Cave, age 8, born 1852 in Missouri, was residing in St. Clair County in the 1860 Census with sister Josephine Cave age 13, and another sister Martha Ann Cave age 18, with Martha's husband Charles F. Ashworth age 22, and Martha and Charles' daughter Sarah C. Ashworth 10 months old, born October 12, 1859. Martha Ann Cave and Charles F. Ashworth (actual name: Charles Fenton Mercer Ashworth) were married November 23, 1856 in St. Clair County Missouri, and are raising Martha's brother and sister. It is not known yet why Martha Ann Cave and her husband are raising Martha's brother and sister. But I suspect that Merritt Cave is deceased, having died between 1890 and 1915 in a forest fire in the Mark Twain National Forrest. (From Family Rumors pasted down thru the family to my mother and I). So, your Merritt H. Cave married Catherine (Kitty) Rush on June 21, 1835 in Monroe County Missouri. They may have had children: Martha Ann Cave, born 1842, Josephine Cave born 1847 and Merrit Cave born 1852. Catherine (Kitty) Rush may have died in child birth when Merrit was born in 1852, but such is speculation. (Merritt H. Cave may have remarried, marrying Mary Earles on May 14, 1861, but who is Merrot Cave who married Fannie Geary on June 23, 1872 back in Monroe County, Missouri, where your Catherine (Kitty) Rush married Merrit H. Cave) My grandfather, Martie Caves (spelled with the s) is the son of Merritt Cave and Jenny, who were residing in Butler County, Missouri, with their son Charles A. Cave, age 2, born in Illinois, in the 1880 Census. (Charles A. Cave is likely named after the man who raised him, Charles F. Ashworth) Martie Cave is said to have been raised by grandparents (likely that of his mother) after his father was killed in a forest fire in the Mark Twain National Forest sometime between 1890 and 1915. Martie had a half sister named Panzie of whom's whereabouts have not been found. Martie also had a full blooded sister who resided somewhere in Iowa in 1954, the year Martie died. The year I was born. I am seeking to know anything you find out in your research about your Merrit H. Cave, ancestors of Catherine (Kitty) Rush and their descendants. It is possible that after Catherine Rush passed away, that Merrit H. Cave remarried in 1861, St. Clair County, Missouri. However, this may also be another Merrit H. Cave. It has yet to be proven that this connection to Catherine Rush is correct. No documentation has been found, however, it seems correct that she might name her first son Gabriel, after her brother, who may have raised her.
