Hello again... Was out and about again today... So am sending this new information. I got lucky, and found a very early marriage license, dated December 31, 1833 for a Thomas Cave, son of a John Cave. The marriage license/certificate is of Thomas Cave who married an Elizabeth Cave. Now, it lists John Cave as the father of Thomas Cave, but unfortunately doesn't list the parents of this Elizabeth Cave. The note states that this Elizabeth Cave is over 18 years of age, being attested to by John Cave and his son Thomas Cave. The marriage then took place on January 1, 1834 and they were married by John Logan. The marriage certificate number is #191, and one of the earliest marriage documents I have seen with any family information on it. I found this in the Rushville, Illinois County Clerk's Office. It was the "only" Cave/Caves that I found while there. Now, lets swing on down to the Court House at Havanna Illinois. I found the following Cave/Caves marriages. Alice Cave married Walker C. Cruse April 2, 1882 Cyrus N. Cave married Amanda U. Hurst on Dececember 24, 1885 James A. Cave married Jane Hindman on February 9, 1872 Mahala Cave married Addison Babcock on March 11, 1869 Richard Cave married Elizabeth Barton on January 2, 1860 (no parental info on document). Benjamin H. Cave married Anna E. Furrer July 6, 1915 >>>>>>Note that "H" Walter E. Cave married Freda Schierbeck on June 10, 1910 Kate (Mrs.) Caves married Dan Hanley July 26, 1914 In some of the material I noticed references to Kansas as places of birth in a couple of them. But by then, well, I left my notebook at the Rushville Court House... so I didn't write it all down. I have to go back with a pocket of money to buy certificates, unless somebody has already researched them. I also found a William H. Cave marrying in 1943 but did not have time to look up certificate. I was and am interested because of that darn "H". The Clerk there said somebody had recently looked up some of these Cave/Caves and found one that moved to Cook County Illinois. Bert Cave, brother to my grandfather Martie W. Caves, resided in Havanna Illinois and preferred that area. "Was it because there were cousins in that area?"
Note: This Unknown Caves, is very interesting. Born October 17th, 1880, being the second child of Merrit Henry Cave and Jennie E. Swisher, in Cooperstown, Brown County, Illinois. (The first document giving Cooperstown as a location of residence, gives Merrit's occupation as a Stone Mason, and lists this child as their second child, while further verifying the date of 1852 as Merrit Cave's birth year). But who is this child? Did the child survive? Also, how could Martie W. Caves have been born in March of 1880 in Pine Bluff Arkansas, (according to the 1900 Census) to these parents who had this unknown child in October of 1880? Or is this family still pulling my leg? I found a Carrie Caves, age 20, but born in Missouri, living in a Boarding House, single, and student in 1900 Census of Adams County, Illinois. But I am nearly certain I looked at a marriage license for her, (or Cenia Caves) having been mistakenly listed as a Carr instead of Caves, in the Brown County Records, that showed her parents as Merit H. Cave and Mary Ann Earles. I tried to find that record today, but was unsuccessful. I came across it by accident on an earlier trip, but was short of funds that day, so I did not get a copy of the certificate. Shucks... maybe I'll find it on the next trip.
Mrs. Rosa F. Cave of Durham in the County of Lewis Missouri married Eli Garkie of Maywood in the County of Lewis, Missouri, in Quincy, Adams County on October 1st 1919. Rosa Florence Cave lists her parents as John W. Cave and Emma S********** (long name I can't read) Brides second marriage. Rosa would have been 47 on her next birthday in 1919, meaning she was born abt 1872. Question: Who are John W. Cave's parents? Kathryn M. Cave, born January 4, 1861 in Cloquett, Minnosota to David Earl Cave and Beverly Charlene Gunterman. Kathryn M. Cave died, having never married, on August 20, 1961 Quincy, Adams County Illinois after residing in Carlton Minnesota. Her mother resided in Barmim, Minnesota the the time of her death in 1961. Question: Who are the parents of David Earl Cave? Dewey B. Cave born May 4, 1898 in Illinois, married Florence Long, resided at Liberty Twp, Adams County Illinois and died at 80 years of age on November 6, 1978 in Quincy Illinois. Dewey's son Roger Cave of Liberty Illinois signed his death certificate, stating Dewey B. Cave's parents as John F. Cave and Mary Peterson. Question: Who are the parents of John F. Cave? Hello again I had tried to get to the Hancock County Illinois Court House today, but they were closed by the time I got there. Spent the day at the Brown and Adams County Court Houses. If you are on the list and have done research already at the Hancock County Illinois Court House, I'd appreciate some help. If not, maybe I can help you when I am able to get back down there. Hello Well, I went digging and researching again today. This time in Adams County Court House and the Brown County Court House in Illinois. Found a couple of pieces of interesting information that I am provding below. Hettie R. Caves, age 18 next birthday, daughter of M. Caves (Merit Caves) and Jennie Cooper (Jennie Swisher), married March 26, 1908 in Brown County Illinois to Charles Eakins, age 28 next birthday, of Ottumwa Wapella County, Iowa. Hettie is listed as 18 years of age and born in Missouri. (My mom, now 83, remembered her name after I talked to her. Before I told her that Hettie Caves married somebody from Iowa, my mom told me Hettie lived in Ottumwa Iowa. So I know this M. Caves is Merit Caves). So, since I had previously found Jennie residing with Absolum S. Swisher in the 1900 Census of Adams County Illinois with her son Martie, she "probably remarried a Cooper after 1900 and before March 26, 1908, but no such marriage found in Brown County Illinois. I have not searched for Jennie Cooper in Adams County Illinois yet) Bert Cave, born in Liberty, Adams County Illinois on November 27, 1885 to Merritt Cave and Jennie Swisher. Listed Merritt Cave as being born in Clarence Missouri, and Jennie Swisher as being born in Clayton Illinois (I'm not sure if Clayton is correct). Bert Cave filled out a "Delayed Record of Birth" and had two individuals swear out to his date of birth. One of those was a Guy A. Amen, Clayton Illinois. (Interestingly enough, Absolum S. Swisher was buried in the Amen Cemetery, Adams County Illinois. Charles A. Caves, who I previously "assumed" was Charles Ashworth Caves, was in fact Charles Absolum Caves according to his birth record, dated September 19, 1878 in Concord Twp., Adams County Illinois. Parents listed as Jennie Caves, Nu Swisher, and Merritt Henry Caves. Note: This is the first evidence that the "H" in Merrit H. Caves stood for the name Henry. Charles is listed as the "1st Child" of Merrit Henry Caves and Jennie Swisher. Looks like L. or T., A. Davison Kellerville, Adams County Illinois as name of Medical attendant to birth. What was even more interesting about the Birth Record for this Charles Absolum Caves ws the fact it lists the birth place of his father Merritt Henry Cave as being Pettis County, Missouri, being an age of 26 and lists his mother Jennie Swisher's place of birth as Hancock County Illinois, being an age of 21. (I attempted to stop at the Hancock Illinois Court House but they were closed by the time I got there. Liola Swisher, married Bert Faler of Clayton, Concord Twp, Adams County Illinois. Liola lists her father as A. S. Swisher (Absolum S. Swisher) and, the marriage was witnessed by A. S. Swisher and Mrs. Jennie Caves. Dated August 11, 1905 at Clayton Illinois. Bert Faler's father was listed as George Faler, having no mother's name listed. If you see anything at all that connects or might help me, please contact me. I'm working very hard to find out where Merritt Henry Caves and Jenny Swisher Caves Cooper are buried. My mom, now 83 would very much like to know where her grandparents are buried. It may be that Jenny is buried as a Cooper, and today is the first day that I have been made aware of this fact. Thomas W. Rogers

JESSE M. CAVE’S MEMORIES OF THE BATTLE OF LONE JACK Jessie M. Cave, 80 years old, has unforgetable memories of the battle of Lone Jack, although he was then only five years old. He was a son of Mr. And Mrs. B.B. Cave, who conducted the Lone Jack Hotel. The father was absent, but Mrs. Cave and the children were asleep in the building when the firing began in the streets nearby about 6 o’clock. A number of Federal soldiers broke into the hotel, and began firing out of the doors and windows at the Confederates who responded with a terrific assault. While the conflict was raging, the house, a two-story frame, began to burn. Seeing nothing but certain death if they remained inside, Mrs. Cave decided to face the possibility of it in fleeing from the house. She and her children did so, and, unhurt, made their way to a place of comparative safety a short distance west of the hotel, crouching down close to the ground, where they were hidden by tall weeds. One of the children, an infant in arms, clamored to e nursed. Jesse was one of the children huddled around her. "I remember it all as if it had happened only yesterday." Jesse Cave remarked to a visitor Tuesday afternoon. "Mother sat up and was reaching for my little sister, when a minie ball struck mother in the breast. As soon as possible she was given treatment, but she never recovered, and three weeks later she died. None of the rest of us were injured. The baby died a few years later. One of the other children, my brother, William Henry Cave, was with us when it happened. He was 10 years old then and is still living at the age of 85, at Everett, Washington."
