http://lonestar.texas.net/~robison/letter1.html A Letter From James Cave A few changes in spelling and capitalization have been made, and punctuation has been added to facilitate reading, but the grammar and syntax of the letter are original. 1860 Corinth July 6 My dear daughter, yours of the first instant came to hand this morning, which was very gratifying to me to hear from you myself, and all the family is in good health, with the exception of GeorgeAna. She has the whooping cough. She is getting well. We had to bury Jane's poor little Willie on Tuesday last. Rodgers has lost his oldest child a few weeks ago. Mincy's two small boys are both sick. They think the smallest one will not live. There is but little sickness in Corinth. Alfred Lowry has gone to Texas. He went with a man by the name of Fort to help him to drive a drove of sheep to Texas. Fann had her bed and trunks all ready to put in the wagon and go with them, but I put a stop to her going and sent Alfred without her. I informed Alfred when he satisfied me he was prepared to take care of her I would send Fann to Texas and not until then. Jane is not very stout. She has been on the puny order. She weaned little Willie some time back. Elexis and the two children is well. You complain of hard times in Alabama. It is the same complaint in Mississippi. There is no scarcity of provisions in Corinth, but they are high. Money is hard to raise and has been for the last few weeks since I came to Corinth. Money in Memphis is worth five percent per month. I am at a loss what to say to you about moving this fall to Mississippi, but there is one thing certain. I shall not leave Mississippi and go back to Alabama. Provisions is now making to build a railroad from Corinth to Nashville, Tennessee. The stock is nearly all taken, and it is thought the work will be let this fall. Corinth is bound to improve for years to come. I think the doctor can make a living easier in Mississippi than in Alabama. This is one certain thing. I can, and I see no cause why he could not do the same. There is one thing certain if you come to Corinth. You shall not want for anything while I live. Nothing more to write at this time. All the family [join] me in love to you and the doctor. I will promise you to write you two letters per month until I see you again. So farewell for this time. Lucy and Peter is calling for me to come to the slaughterhouse. James Cave
Hello Over the past three years, I have "attempted" to organize a database here for the Cave/Caves family, entering every piece of information I could locate into one database. My own line is a very difficult one to research and this has helped me as well as others from my sharing of material. My own great grandfather Merritt Henry Cave, born 1852 in Pettis County Missouri and the one wife I know of, Jennie E. Swisher, added the "s" to the Cave Family name. Now, there are, as yet, unlocated children of the following marriages which may also have the added "s" to the Cave Family name. Merrit H. Cave m Mary Ann Earles 14 May 1861, St. Clair, MO Merrott Cave m Fannie Geary 23 Jun 1872, Pettis, MO Merit Cave m Mary M. Duncan 18 Mar 1874, Hickory, MO (All names are more than likely correctly spelled as "Merritt Cave". But the children from these marriages may in fact be Caves. Abstract for Deed, date of deed September 13th, 1858, recorded September 19, 1858. Book G, page 23. Name of Grantor: Merit H. Cave and Catherine R. Cave, his wife, of St. Clair County, Missouri. Sellilng price: Love and Goodwill to son's James R. Cave and Merit H. Cave and daughter Sany E. Cave of same County. 120 Acres, E1/2 NE1/4 NE1/4 SE1/4 Sec 7T 36 R25. Now, I know Merrit Henry Cave, above, was just about 6 years old in 1858, when this deed was issued to him and his brother and sister. And I know that he is found in the 1860 Census with Mother Catherine, and several children. However, Sany E. Cave is not listed on the Census of 1860? (Note: Was Sany E. Cave a nickname or was she married or desceased by 1860?) James R. Cave is in the 1860 Census with his mother Catherine. (Catherine Rush, who married Merrit Henry Cave in Monroe County, Missouri in 1835) The above Abstract Deed is the first document that proves that Merritt Henry Cave is the son of the Merritt H. Cave who married Catherine Rush in 1835 in Monroe County Missouri. Thanks to the St. Louis Genealogical Society. (Catherine Rush is the daughter of Garland Rush) Merit H. Cave of St. Clair Co. I am searching for the origins of Thomas Cave who married Elizabeth Hellawell in Huddersfield (25 May 1825) They had 4 children: John, Sarah, Richard and Thomas Thomas Snr died about 1835 before the birth of his 4th child Thomas. The family lived in the Sheepridge area of Huddersfield. Any help would be much appreciated

Nr 673: ..."The vestry of St. Mark's Parish did not meet after the organizational meeting on 9 Jan 1731 (NS) until New Year's Day, March 25. (I have not seen any evidence that New Year's Day was a special day in that time.) The meeting was held at the Fork Chapel, which was across the Rapidan River from Germanna. The first order of business was to arrange, with a surveyor of Spotsylvania County, to run the dividing line between St. George's Parish and St. Mark's Parish. For this, he was to receive not more than eight hundred pounds of tobacco. Then Abraham Chambers was to tar the church at Germanna, using his own supplies, and he was to be paid one thousand pounds of tobacco Convenant. Also Abraham Chambers was to repair the windows at the Germanna church and to sweep and clean the church. For doing this until the next parish levy, he was to be paid four hundred and fifty pounds of tobacco. John Carder was ordered to sweep and clean the Fork Chapel until the next levy, for which he was to be paid one hundred pounds of tobacco. Mr. BENJAMIN CAVE was ordered to find someone to sweep and clean the Mountain Chapel until the next levy....." GERMANNA History Notes Page #028 Nr 678: ...."In 1733, there were 816 tithables, who were each to pay 85 and a quarter pounds of tobacco as the parish levy. The high levy reflected the cost of the glebe farm and house and the cost of the new church. "An unusual item in the minutes was the decision to move the north door of the church to the south side and to set the church east and west (the church was already built). One of the problems which the vestry continually faced in these early years was to find workmen who could do a good job and could complete work on schedule. More than once the vestry threatened to sue the workman. Part of the problem may have lain with the vestry itself. In December of 1733, they decided to erect a chapel and instructed BENJAMIN CAVE to find the cheapest man to do the job....."

Hello I believe the following Caves family line "has not" been researched. A great many Cave and Caves individuals may descend from the descendant branches of this line. The families moved all over the midwest and as far away as California and New Mexico from what I have found already. But lurking in County Court House Records may be the connecting information we need to bring these families back together. I have found many of the Cave/Caves recorded as Carr individuals, only to find the documents stating Cave/Caves. Especially in Adams and Brown County Illinois. This line dates back to Benjamin Cave born 1703. So if you haven't found a connection to your Cave/Caves family member yet, this may be the place to look. As found in the Kewanee Illinois Public Library by Thomas W. Rogers on November 8, 1999 in his continued efforts to find the Caves historical information for his family tree research project. I know that a child of Mary Ann Earles also married in Brown County Illinois. So exactly how are all these marriages above related? And more importantly, how exactly can we work our way thru them to know this? And one possibility arises.... are all these marriages actually the result of only two Merritt H. Cave's? But if so, where are all the descendants? In three years of research, and a great many phone calls, I have not found any outside of the descendants of Jennie Swisher that relate to the above other marriages. I am not familiar with the Geary and Earles lines at all. Thomas W. Rogers
Boone Conty Missouri men went to California in 1850 Gold Rush. What do you know about the men and woman listed in this information? If we discuss these individuals on the list, we will all learn more about them.
