    2. My apologies, Jim Cave. The way that I read the earlier e-mail in this thread was that the tree presented was your family tree. I see now that it is travelback's. However my point was that I have seen a number of web sites that incorrectly state that a John Cave was first married to a Miss Andrews, and second to an Elizabeth Travers, and that by his second wife he had a daughter Mary Cave who married John Echols. However the Elizabeth Travers who married John Cave was born somewhere in the 1680's or 1690's...(since her father was born ca 1662)....so she could not have been the mother of Mary Cave who was born probably ca 1670. That is all. Michael Walker (MDWW65)

    3. Beg your pardon, MDWW65@aol.com. I , Jim Cave, do not have Mary Cave in my tree as you say below. I was including a Travelback4u@aol.com tree for reference. Jim Cave ----- Original Message ----- From: MDWW65@aol.com To: CAVE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, March 07, 2002 7:47 PM Subject: [CAVE] John Cave thru Benjamin Cave born 1703 My oh my oh my.... I am starting to appear strident on this issue and certainly don't mean to. Again, Mary Cave who was born probably ca 1670, the woman who married John Echols and ancestress of many many people including a lot on this list, COULD NOT have been the daughter of the John Cave who married Elizabeth Travers. One reason, among others, is that Elizabeth Travers' father Giles Travers was definitely born very close to 1662 as per extant records. Thus his supposed granddaughter Mary Cave clearly could not have been born ca 1650 as we have in Jim Cave's tree, or even 1670 as is a more probable date based on births of her children. (See McIllwaine, Minutes of the Council of Virginia, pp. 270, 271, 287.) This is PROOF that Mary Cave Echols is NOT the daughter of John Cave and Elizabeth Travers...if only people who read this missive could make note of same and change their internet memorializations. ______________________________

    3. I am a desc of Robert Cave whom you list in your message below as the first child of John and Unknown Andrews Cave. On what basis do you make this connection? I am sincerely interested in the ancestry of this Robert Cave. Jim Cave ----- Original Message ----- From: Travelback4u@aol.com To: CAVE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, March 07, 2002 8:57 AM Subject: [CAVE] John Cave thru Benjamin Cave born 1703 Hello My mom's maiden name is Caves, and I am a descendant of John Cave of Virginia. Descendants of John Cave Generation No. 1 1. JOHN1 CAVE was born in Virginia, and died in Stafford Co. Virginia. He married (1) UNKNOWN ANDREWS in King & Queen Virginia. She died in King & Queen Virginia. He married (2) ELIZABETH TRAVERS in Stafford County, Virginia, daughter of GILES TRAVERS and ANN WAUGH. Notes for JOHN CAVE: Notes: From the Cave Genealogy Society Descended from the Cave's of Virginia. Carolyn's ancestry goes back to Henry Cave born 1769 in Carolina County Virginia, who married Miss Smith. We then come to the Benjamin Cave who arrived in Va in 1725, and the question of their origin. Some say England and descended from William Cave of Pickwell, 1637-1713. It is unfortunate that the only recorded children are, Elizabeth (1663), William (1664-1665), mary (1669), Ann (1671), William (1674) and John (1676-1677). My records of Benjamin over this period are: Benjamin of Cold Overton bapt 21Apr1665, son of John (c1638) and Ann; Benjamin of Leicester bapt 22May1698, son of James and Mary. There may be others, I am sure, but they have still to be found. Was the Justice of Peace in Orange County Virginia, a Commissioners of Peace. In January of 1734, Qualified as Sheriff, Lt. Col. of Colonial Militia of Spotsylvannia County from which Orange County was formed. ID: I2824 Name: Richard Cave Title: (Rev). Sex: M Occupation: Baptist minister Birth: 00 1750 in Virginia Death: 00 1816 in Kentucky Note: >From HISTORY OF KENTUCKY BAPTISTS, by J. H. Spencer, Vol. 2., pages 23-24 [1885]. Note: RICHARD CAVE was one of the pioneer preachers of central Kentucky, and was very useful among the early settlers. He was the son of Captain Benjamin Cave of Orange county, Virginia, where he was born to far from the year 1750. At an early age, he was led to Christ, under the preaching of the famous Samuel Harris and James Read, and united with Upper Spottsylvania church. He was set apart to the ministry, by this church, while he was quite young. After preaching a few years in his native county, he followed Lewis Craig, whose sister he had married, and his brother William Cave, who had moved the fall before, to the wilderness of Kentucky, in 1782. He settled in Garrard county, where he united with Gilbert's Creek church. This was the same church he had first joined, but now, in a new location, and bearing a new name. He remained at Gilbert's Creek some tow years after Lewis Craig, the old pastor, had moved away, and, with George Stokes Smith, supplied the church with the ministry of the word. In the spring of 1785, he moved to Woodford county, where he went into the constitution of Clear Creek church. Here he was associated in the ministry with John Taylor, John Dupuy, James Rucker and, soon afterwards, with John Tanner and the venerable John Sutton. He was regarded as a man of great piety, and was very zealous and useful, especially during a great revival that commenced under his ministry at Clear Creek, in 1800. The church received 326 by baptism, during one year, and was increased to 558 members. This was the most useful period of Mr. Cave's ministry; for not long afterwards, he fell into the pit that has ineffaceably spotted the garments of multitudes of good men. He contracted the habit of drinking too freely. When reproved for this sin, he repented bitterly, and could never again be induced to taste spirituous liquors. His zeal for the cause of Christ was undiminished, but his usefulness was much impaired. Not long before his death, he arose to close the exercise of a meeting he attended, but was overpowered by a flood of tears and compelled to sit down. He died of a protracted diarrhea, in July, 1816. A few days before his departure, he expressed great serenity of soul, and a patient acquiescence in the divine will. He had been a teacher of music and was an excellent singer. A little before his last breath, he sand in a loud voice, the words: -- Note: "O for an overcoming faith To cheer my dying hours; To triumph o'er the monster death, And all its frightful powers." Note: Pastor of Clear Creek Baptist Church 1800. Probate mentions only John, Mary, and Richard Cave. Sketch on Cave in Rev. John Taylor's THOUGHTS ON MISSIONS. His sister, Elizabeth married William Johnson, and they were the parents of Col. Robert Johnson. Richard's parents were Hannah Bledsoe and Benjamin Cave, who was in the House of Burgesses from Orange Co. His will is dated July and was probated in November of 1816. Book E, page 105. 2. Hello My mom's maiden name is Caves, and I am a descendant of John Cave of Virginia. 2. Jim Cave
    3. I am from Robert Cave d.1755c Orange Co VA. Here from my web page are some thoughts on possible ancestors. Could be Benjamin's ancestors too.Comments? Jim Cave ANCESTORS OF ROBERT CAVE AND CONTEMPORARIES By Jim Cave There were several men with the surname CAVE who were contemporaries in the 1700s in Stafford, Spotsylvania and later Orange and Culpeper Counties in Virginia. There were John Jr., William, David, Benjamin, Robert, Thomas and Joseph. It is interesting to raise the question as to whether some or all of these men were sons of John Cave and his wife --?-- Andrews. >From the following records it can be presumed that John Cave, carpenter of King and Queen County, owned land in Stafford County and died there in 1720 or 1721. Further, that he had sons John Jr. and David: That John Jr. died without heirs before 1748. That the mother of these sons was a daughter of George Andrews which George owned lots in Marlborough Town, Stafford County. There is also some basis for believing that William Cave (d.1742) of Stafford Co. was also a son of John Cave since David Cave released the land that had reverted to him after John Jr. died, to Keene Withers who was married to William Cave's daughter. Her father William had died before the land transfer in 1748. Record 1: 1707/08/05 John Cave Stafford John Cave of King and Queen Co., a carpenter of King and Queen County, buys from Sampson Darrell, of Glocester Co., 300 acres of land in Stafford Co. lying and being on the south side of Potomack Creek and bounded as follows: Northerly in Potomack Creek, Easterly with the lands of John Gorvey, Thomas Gregg, Wm. Waught, Southerly and westerly with the lands of Giles Travers; the said 300 acres of land being the one half of 600 acres sold by Capt. Wm Heaberd to Capt. John Norgrove by deed dated the 6th day of March 1667. Stafford Co. Deed Book Z, p384 Darrell release to Cave recorded 8 Oct 1707. Record 2: 1721 John Cave Stafford "John Cave's will was dated August 6, 1714 and proved in 1721 at Stafford County Court; it was recorded in now lost Will Book "K", page 2. He devised 200 acres of land on Axton's Run and adjoining the property of John Gowry and Giles Travers to his son John Cave but he "died so that the above mentioned land fell and reverted to" David Cave of Orange County who was joined by his wife Sarah in conveying the said property to Keene Withers of Hamilton Parish, Prince William County, on September 12, 1748." Quote above from "The Register of Overwharton Parish" by George H. S. King Note: Keene Withers was the husband of Elizabeth Cave, only surviving child of William Cave dec'd. William may have been next in line after John Jr., to inherit John 's (d.1721) land so David passed it on to William Cave's next of kin. Record 3: The following from the papers of Mrs. Dorothy Brown Thompson: Deed of Lease and Release dated 12 & 13 Sept. 1748 from David Cave & Sarah, His wife of St. Thos. Parish, Orange ,to Cain Withers of Hamilton Parish, Prince William Co.-"Whereas John Cave of Stafford Co. dec'd. did by his last will and testament dated 6 Aug. 1714 give and bequeath to his son John Cave 200 acres of land lying and being in Stafford County in Overwharton Parish bounding upon Axton's Run and upon the lands of John Gore and upon the lands of Giles Travers and the sd John Cave, son of the testator John, died so that the above mentioned land fell and reverted to the said David Cave party to these presents" Wit: John Hamilton, Charles Waller, Anthony Murray Recorded Stafford Court 13 Sept. 1748... Record 4: 1737/07/27 John Cave Stafford John Cave sells 3 lots in Marlborough town, Stafford Co to John Mercer. This transaction is recorded in John Mercer's Land Book as follows: "This indenture made the twenty seventh day of July in the year of our Lord God one thousand seven hundred and thirty seven between John Cave of the county of Orange of the one part and John Mercer of the county of Stafford of the other part witnesseth that the said John Cave for and in consideration of the sum of five shillings sterling to him in hand paid by the said John Mercer the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, hath granted bargained and sold and by these present doth grant bargain and sell unto the said John Mercer all that and those three lots or half acres of land suitable lying and being in Marlboroughtown in the said county of Stafford known and distinguished in the platt and survey of the said town made by Theodorick Bland surveyor of the said county and recorded among the records of the said county by the numbers (8),! (9) and (11) which were made over and conveyed by Matthew Thompson and John Withers gent. Feoffees of the said town to George Andrews grandfather of the said John Cave whose heir the said John Cave is. ... In witness whereof the said John Cave hath hereunto set his hand and seal the day month and year first above written. s/ John Cave Sealed and delivered in presence of us. The above mentioned five shillings sterling being first paid. Thomas Staine Rawleigh Chinn William Cave James Mercer At Above held for Stafford County te 13th 7ber 1737 the within lease from John Cave to John Mercer was proved by the oathes of William Cave and Rawleigh Chinn two of the subscribing witnesses thereto and admitted to record. Test. H. Taylor" In addition to John Jr., William and David mentioned above as possible sons of John Cave and __?__Andrews, there were other contemporaries in Stafford, Spotsylvania and later Orange and Culpeper Counties who may also have been sons. There were Benjamin, Robert, Thomas and Joseph. David, Benjamin and Robert in particular were closely associated with one another in the public records between 1720 and 1750 and gave sons these names. For example, David named sons David, Benjamin, Robert, Joseph and probably John: Benjamin named sons Benjamin, John, William, and David: Robert named sons Robert, John and William. In considering Benjamin who was to become Burgess from Orange County, as a son of John Cave, one must reject the once widely held premise that Benjamin was the immigrant ancestor. For many years a chart assembled by an English genealogist named Tyrrell was accepted as truth. This chart showed Benjamin as the immigrant son of Rev. William Cave of Windsor, chaplain to Charles II, and his wife Anna Stonehouse Cave. Rev. William Cave's will was cited in support . Mrs. Dorothy Brown Thompson, long time Cave family researcher , says in her papers: "In 1957, through the London Society of Genealogists, I succeeded [Dorothy Brown Thompson] in getting a photocopy of this will from the Perogative Court of Canterbury. The will mentions daughters, a grandson, a deceased son Ralph, but not any mention of Benjamin or any living son.The will is long, detailed, meticulous. It seems most unlikely that he would have omitted to mention a living son even if provided for, even if estranged. At an! y rate, he did not; so Tyrrell's reference was false. Benjamin' s deposition, 1758 shows he was born 1703, which further disproves this parentage: Anna (Stonehouse) Cave died 1691." According to George H.S. King in a report to Mrs D. B. Thompson dated 18 April 1967, the deposition which establishes the birth year of Benjamin the Burgess is filed in the suit papers Crosthwait vs Crosthwait, Orange Co. VA Judgement File #17, Papers of June Court 1759. According to the report the deposition reads in part as follows: "Benjamin Cave Gent. Sworn & Examined in the suit Depending in the County Court of Orange between Abraham Crosthwait Plaintiff and William Crosthwait Defendant, in the presense and by Consent of the partis _ Deposeth and Saith, That he is about 55 years or thereabouts... That about the time of Timothy Crosthwait purchasing the land in question from Hezekiah Rhodes... &c: Benja, Cave John Cave (16__-1720) subject of this piece, may or may not have been the immigrant. Records such as Cavaliers and Pioneers and the St. Stephens Parish Register indicate that there were earlier Cave's who could have been a prior generation.
