Hi - The facts are that when the slaves were set free, if they were well treated by their masters they took up their masters name, lots of them stayed on. Before that they were listed only as first name (census). Some few may have decended from white families, but most only took their names. Hard to emagine that one treated very bad would then take the name of their former owner.
