    2. Many of us have this information :Cosby from England to Ireland to Virginia in 1627. In addition I have my ancestors from Virginia to North Carolina to Tennessee to Alabama. I'm sure we're all willing to share since most of the early research was done long ago by many others. Mary Paul

    2. In a message dated 97-07-15 08:37:29 EDT, you write: << Linda wrote: >Has anyone ever been in contact with a Cosby researcher with the screen name >Cleo1927? Just wanted to clarify. I haven't heard of this person but hope you find her! Wanda Rabb >> Yes it is an AOL address; and I have placed them on my buddy list. Someone is still using that screen name because I still still see the name online from time to time. I have tried sending IMs to her as well as e-mail but get no response. According to our correspondence they had the history of the Cosby family from England to Ireland/Scotland to U.S. in S.C. history spanning well over 400 yrs. You can see why I an so anxious to get a response from Cleo1927. Linda IN VA

    3. "Mmkoonc" sent everybody a fascinating list of descendants on 27 June, one being Descendants of Alexander Cosby. My own family records, and I don't really have any proof of dates before 1800, are almost the same but not quite. Here is my contribution, starting with the first Cosby I can find: Robert of Cossibey, no dates; his son John of Cossibey, again no dates; his son Robert Cossibey of Hermaston, Lincolnshire, alive in 1516, whose wife was Isabel Page, daughter of Ralph Page, Squire of Great Leake, Nottinghamshire and his wife Isabel Blake; their son John Cosbie married Mabel de Poston, daughter of Argard de Poston; their son was General Francis Cosby, abt 1510-1580, who married Mary Seymour, daughter of Edward Seymore Duke of Somerset, b. 1500, executed 1552, and his wife Anne Stanhope 1497-1587 (here I have data, if anybody is interested, going back to Mary Seymour's 7th grandfather King Edward III, and further back); Francis and Mary's son was Alexander Cosby, b. 1547 at Stradbally Abbey, Queens Co., Ireland. He was Squire of Stradbally Abbey and died 19 May 1596, the story goes that he died on the bridge there in a battle wiht the original Irish landowner, who strangely objected to the English appropriating his property.. Alexander married Dorcas Sydney, daughter of William Sydney of Oxford, Kent; Dorcas was a maid of honour to Elizabeth I, and was cousin of Sir Henry Sidney, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland; she bore 15 children ! to Alexander, including Charles Cosby, b. 12 Sept 1585 in Stradbally Abbey, d. 23 Nov 1633 in Virginia. Charles came to Virginia in 1628 with his infant son John, settled in York County which later became Warwick Co. Charles married Mary Loftus, d. 1623, daughter of Adam Loftus, DD, of Trinity College, Cambridge, Chaplain to Elizabeth I, became Archbishop of Armagh and Lord Chancellor of Ireland, was first Provost of the University of Dublin, d. 1605. Adam's wife was a Mary Pruden. Charles and Mary's son John was born in Stradbally Abbey in 1623. John died in Virginia in 1696. He married Sarah, surname unknown, her dates are abt. 1646-1740, and their children included Charles Cosby, abt. 1675-1765, who married Jane Meriwether, abt. 1670-1760, daughter of a David Meriwether. Charles and Jane's son David Cosby, 1705-1770, married Mary Overton, 1705-1785, and their son John Cosby, 1741-1827, married a Sarah Wingfield. John and Sarah's son Overton Cosby, 1772-1815, was wounded in the War of 1812; he married Ann Bisset, b. 1785. Overton and Ann's son Thomas D. Cosby, b. 1809, married a Mary Jane Board, and their daughter Mary Josephine Cosby, b. 26 Mar 1841 in Priceville, KY, d. 29 Oct 1924, was my great-grandmother. Mary Josephine Cosby married David Crockett Ashbaugh, 1834-1914. Hope this helps somebody. If anybody wants the royals, true or not, I've got some for you.

    2. Thank you for the information.... I will try to make the necessary corrections... and pass them along. Could you send me an outline of the information so I do not make any errors in inputting the information.... This would be very helpful to me as I am not a Cosby descendant... I am a Sims Descendant.... Cosby is a line I have done research on to find a man names Benjamin Sims who had a daughter named Arrena....I do however like to keep my information as correct as possible... Thank you for your concern and information... Joan mmkoonc@molalla.net From: CBurkh3128@aol.com Date: Thu, 26 Jun 1997 20:59:42 -0400 (EDT) To: CAUSBY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: Cosby/Causby anywhere? Reply-to: CAUSBY-L@rootsweb.com Dear mmkoonc, Thanks for the Cosby information. However you are incorrect on Griffith Dickenson and Ann Cosby. I am a direct descendant of Griffith and Ann. I can tell by your information that you got a hold of Dorothy Burnett Peterson's information because you have Lucy Dickenson and the Cox in your line. Here is Griffith's will he died 1785 in Louisa Co. Va. Notice she had to change the dates. I believe Dorothy connected Lucy to the wrong Griffith Dickenson . The correct on is not married to Ann Cosby. December 12 1785-Louisa County Will of Griffeth Dickason, of Trinity Parish, Louisa Co. dated November 1, 1785, mentions; son, Robert Dickason, tract of land whereon I now live containing 466 acres; son James Dickason, tract of land whereon I now live containing 560 acres; grandson, Nathaniel Anderson; granddaughter, Elizabeth Dabney; granddaughter, Ann Anderson; granddaughter; Mary Anderson; sons, Charles and Higgason Cosby Dickason; daughter Ann Tompkins; and daughter-in-law, Rachel Dickerson. Executors- three sons, Robert James and Higgason Cosby Dickerson. (Will Book 3, page123) Bond of Robert, Jas & Higgason Cosby Dickason Exors. Of est of Griffith Dickason. Amt. 5000 pounds. (Because of the son's name, Higgason Cosby Dickerson, this Griffith was the one who married Ann Cosby) I am decended from Robert. Here is Ann's father's will. Notice Griffith Dickenson, Higgason Cosby Dickenson, and Charles are all mentioned. Robert and James are not mentioned because I'm sure John Cosby knew Griffith would leave them farms. So he left them land they are younger than Robert and James. September 12, 1760 Will of John Cosby lists sons John, Wm, Griffith (Griffith Dickinson). Dau. Elizabeth Snelson. Grandsons: Charles and Higgason Dickinson, sons of Griffith Dickinson, remaining tract of 1000 acres. To son John Cosby all my land in Hanover Co., being his plantation-about 718 acres. To son William Cosby 1200 acres of land in Louisa Co., whereon I posses about 3000 acres, the same 1200 acres, where Will lives called Will's Quarter. To grandsons: Charles Dickinson & Higgason Dickinson, sons of Griffith Dickinson remainder of tract of 1800 acres. Mentions Mary Anderson, wife of Benja. Anderson. Grandsons: James and Cosby Duke, grandsons James Cosby, son of James Cosby. Executors: Cleavers Duke and Bartlett Anderson Recd. 26 March 1761. Ann apparently died before 1760-61 Because she is not mention but some of her children are. Also you have Griffith and Ann marring about 1739. I can prove through bible records that Ann Dickenson Tompkins was born 1735. I run across this genealogy that Dorthory Burnett Peterson put out at least two to three time a day. She must have made a bundle. As I know she sell them. But She has made an error on the Griffith Dickenson who married Ann Cosby. I believe she probably got her information from The History of Louisa County Va. by Malcom Harris. And I can prove that the Griffith Dickenson mention as son of Nathaniel Dickenson is not the Griffith Dickenson who married Ann Cosby. They are related but not father and son. I can show recorded where Nathaniel's son Griffith is married to Sarah. and Sarah is alive at the same time Ann Cosby is alive. So this is also incorrect. It appears that Griffith Dickenson who married Ann Cosby is the son of Thomas Dickenson who patented land in the early 1700's. And it is my belief that Thomas and Nathaniel and another Griffith with a son Griffith who left Louisa for Pittsylvania and Halifax is probably the family. That Dorothy Burnett Peterson should have looked at. Sorry if I seem excited. I keep having to explain this. I should probably just type an article and send to the Virginia Historical Society and have it printed. Sincerely, Connie Dickerson Burkhead

    1. Re: Cosby/Causby anywhere?
    2. Dear mmkoonc, Thanks for the Cosby information. Anderson. Rison issue: Mary Jane Cosby (b. 1831) m. William R. Pugh Oscar Garland Cosby (b. 1832 Richmond, VA, d. 1876, Richmond, VA) m. Mary Catherine Forrer issue: Elizabeth Frances Cosby Oscar Garland Cosby, Jr. Isabella Cohoke Cosby Ora Lee Cosby Walter Nelson Cosby (b. 1866 d. 1917 m. Lorena Gertrude Folkes issue: Walter Nelson Cosby, Jr. among others...he was my grandfather I am trying to find the mother and father of Peter Garland Cosby. He was a Tobacconist and hotel proprieter in Richmond most of his life. Disappeared at the end of the Civil War with his wife ?????????? I have been unable to link him to Edward N. Cosby, who gave him power of attorney in 1832, possibly his father. I don't think this is the same Edward Cosby that was the son of James Cosby and Sarah Nelson.....however, there is a link there somewhere. The name Garland and Nelson are very prevalent in my family, including in my own name. Peter G. Cosby may have been the son of Peter Cosby that married Ann Eggleston in Louisa County but the younger children are not mentioned in his will. Any ideas or links out there? I have much, much more info on this line also. Regards, N. Wayne Cosby

    3. Hmmm I thnk I missed something. Did someone send a file attachment to the list? If so, I didn't receive it! While we are on that subject, we really should not send file attachments via the list. Some people cannot handle file attachments and they mess up their systems. Also, Juno subscribers cannot receive file attachments either. Anyway, it's SO great to see everyone exchanging such good information. Sure wish I had more on my CAUSBYS to share! >Is anyone else having problems with the attached files that are arriving thru >Causby-L @rootsweb.com?
