    1. More on the Morganton Store Account
    2. Wanda Rabb
    3. I contacted Berna Stillwell for more information on the Morganton Store Account. This was found in a Burke County Genealogical Society Journal. She was kind to send me the entire page which I will share with you. No further information is available except this. Here's a copy of the Burke Journal page: Copy The Burke Journal December 1992 "The Morganton Store" Account Book 1791-1792 From The Morganton News-Herald -- June 10, 1915 (Editor's note: The following article was submitted by Mildred Walker as part of her continuing series from Burke County newspapers. However, the singular significance of the material contained in this piece warrants its presentation in the "Journal" as a separate feature. This also occasions a reminder to researchers to always check every possible source of information when tracing ancestors -- in this case, a 1915 newspaper article gives us 231 names from a 1791-1792 Morganton account book!) AN OLD MORGANTON RECORD The destruction of the records of Burke County at the close of the Civil War was a great loss to the county in a historical sense. Who lived in and near Morganton a hundred years ago? There are very few records left which throw any light on the question. In an old account book kept in "The Morganton Store" in 1791 and 1792 the following names appear among the list of customers: (The List ) Some of these names, it will be noted, have entirely disappeared from Burke, but most of them are family names still represented in the county. This old account book was found at "Belvidere", one of the homes of the Erwin's on Johns River, when one of the outbuildings was torn down, ten or fifteen years ago (Note: ca.1900-1905). The entries were made with a goose quill pen, and the "figures" are in pounds, shillings and pence. The goods were hauled from Fayetteville, N.C. the entries showing a payment of forty pounds to Jeremiah Thompson and Thomas Patton for hauling two loads of merchandise from Fayetteville to Morganton. As forty pounds face value is equal to $200 in round numbers, it is surprising that some legislative commission was not appointed to investigate the overcharges of these old time freight monopolists. The old Morganton Store, the name of whose proprietor is not given, dealt largely in deer skins, bear hides, and gingseng root as articles of barter, and sold large quantities of Jamaican rum, silver snuff boxes and shoe buckles. Wrought iron nails were sold by the hundred, 100 twenty penny nails costing four shillings, or one dollar. Other articles were: rum per quart three shillings; sugar per pound eight shillings; silk gloves, twelve shillings; linen per yard, ten to seventeen shillings; wheat flour per hundred, twenty shillings; corn, two shillings; wheat flour per hundred, twenty shillings or one pound; steel per pound, three shillings; deer skins two shillings; bear skins, twelve shillings six pence; venison hams, each one shilling six pence; pewter plates, each four shillings and six pence; lead per pound two shillings; Dutch blankets, each one pound four shillings; butter per pound, six pence. The only books sold were Bibles, and Testaments at fourteen shillings and seven shillings respectively; and the "Young Man's Companion" at fourteen shillings. When it is considered that the pound was $5, the shilling 25 cents and the pence, two cents; these prices will appear somewhat steep; but it is probable that they were payable in the depreciated coin of that day and that all things considered the old Morganton merchant did very well by his customers. 1. Information on Rootsweb
    2. Wanda Rabb
    3. The following note was sent to listowners last week. I decided I should pass it along to the lists so everyone, especially our new subscribers, will have a better understanding of what Rootsweb is and how it has evolved. I believe we owe these people our support for all that they do in maintaining our various surname and other genealogy mailing lists. If you can afford to do so, please make a contribution today! ********* Beginning of post *********** It's been a long, rough summer. ### We had excruciating problems with attacks from crackers, but we've tightened security somewhat and that problem seems to have abated. <knock on wood> ### As many of you know, RootsWeb adopted the 1,000-odd Maiser mailing lists after a spam attack forced Larry Stephens to close his site. Since that time, the number of lists has grown to more than 1,500 and we are continuing to create more than 100 new lists each month. We've also adopted the eWorld mailing lists after Apple chose to stop supporting them at LSoft. These are among the largest genealogical lists, and share gateways with the various genealogical Usenet news groups. It's important to note that Apple didn't forsake the lists, though: they generously donated a server to RootsWeb to help house the lists. ### As a consequence of these adoptions and the natural growth in use of RootsWeb, we're now "moving more bytes" than *any* other genealogical site on the Internet. Our Web server handles a substantial fraction of the load handled by Microsoft.com's 15 servers, and our older (and more heavily loaded) mail server handles about half the load of plum.lsoft.com, the world's busiest list server. ### In part caused by the influx of new lists (and also by the increasing popularity of the 1,700 Websites we host), RootsWeb experienced a series of technical problems. While we managed to come through the problems with little actual downtime, Karen and I were running with very little sleep and no free time for several months. During that time we made a number of changes, including: o Growing from 2 to 4 main servers, and from 2 to 5 auxiliary servers. o Upgrading the operating systems on our servers to a more stable version of Unix. o Adding industrial quality uninterruptible power supplies and power conditioners. o Adding redundant networking hardware in our network operating centers. o Growing from one to two (and soon three) separate and partially redundant network operating centers. o Adding fast, high-capacity tape backup systems. o And a hundred other large and small improvements. But the executive summary is that we've made a laborious and expensive transition to operating a professional-quality site. ### Concerning Member and Sponsor services, the one thing we regret from the last year is that we've done a poor job of supporting folks who wanted Web space or GEDCOM service on our servers. We intend to remedy that problem within the next several weeks. And as we announced before, all of the folks who wanted Web space or GEDCOM service will have their memberships extended to a year after we get them up and running. ### Concerning fundraising, RootsWeb is now entering its thirteenth month of full operation. We've been too busy supporting the site to spend much time on fundraising, but we anticipate launching a major drive shortly. While part of the funds will be used for covering the costs of operating the site, we're hopeful that in the next fiscal year we can raise enough fungible funds that we can get on with what we'd really like to be spending money on: BUYING GOVERNMENT RECORD SETS AND BRINGING THEM ONLINE FOR EVERYONE TO FREELY USE. ### I'd like to end with a personal thank-you to everyone who has contributed to RootsWeb during the last year. You should each feel like you've done something for Internet genealogy -- if you hadn't supported RootsWeb, the world would have been a different place: o ROOTS-L, the Maiser lists, and the eWorld lists would still be depending on the charity of others, and might not exist at all. o 1,700 USGenWeb and other Websites wouldn't have had a home with unlimited space for data. o The Roots Surname List wouldn't have had a home. Thank you for helping Internet genealogy grow! -B -- Dr. Brian Leverich Co-moderator, soc.genealogy.methods/GENMTD-L RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative http://www.rootsweb.com/ P.O. I have marriage records that I copied in Rutherford Co this summer if that would help you. I noticed that one of the names you are searching is Ivey. My gr-gr grandfather John Loven b. 1822 TN married Narcissa Ann Ivey b. 1828 AL. They married in Marshall Mississippi Feb 14, 1848. They lived in Neshoba Mississippi until sometime in the early 1860s. I have NOOOO other information on the Ivey name and have not been successful in finding anything. Surely someone has a spare Narcissa Ann somewhere...wouldn't you think? Thanks Maxine Anglin Childress, TX

    1. Free query service
    2. Wanda Rabb
    3. I am forwarding the following information to my mailing lists as many of us have roots going back to UK. I just checked the Tree Tops web site and it all looks legit. TREE TOPS FAMILY TREE QUERY SERVICE: The idea is to send your FAMILY TREE QUERY of no more than 40 words which must include a postal address, and it will go on the television screen on Sky News fastext for one week and be seen all over the UK, Ireland and Europe. This is a FREE service and you do not need to have the facility to use it. At the end of each month a copy of the un-edited version of the queries are in the TREE TOPS GENEALOGICAL JOURNAL which also contains other bits of information and useful titbits. This is available for sale each month and is bought by researchers in many other countries so once your message has gone on screen you do get 'passed around' a bit. The 2nd FREE service is called 'WE'LL MEET AGAIN" which is also a query service but more for the living, old pals, war buddies, 20c descendants etc. Again 40 words, there is no Print out for this service. All queries for the above two services to be sent to:- tree.tops@virgin.net putting TREE TOPS QUERY on the message line or by snail mail to P.O. BOX 116, SWINDON, WILTS SN3 2SX, ENGLAND No limit to the number of queries you can send but you will only get ONE on per week. The 3rd FREE service is a similar service for those who have Canadian research. This is run by Mary in Canada and is called MAPLE LEAF QUERIES. Maple Leaf is a similar service for those who have Canadian research. Send your query and it will go on our web page for one month and can be seen by any surfers of the net.
