    1. Re: GEN-OBIT Mailing List
    2. Mario & Barbara Martinez
    3. The Gen Obit site is very helpful..and it can be very rewarding to be a contributor (I was for a while). When you have a "mess" in a census, or if you have a family with many daughters, an obit can clear up who is who...and greatly help in finding the married names of the sisters of your ancestors. In situations where the fellow is intestate..or the will was written before the children were grown..it can be a blessing too. I have seen alot of immigration information on obits too, that even include the name of the ship the ancestor came across the ocean on. However, obits should be used with care, as they are only as good as the folks who wrote them...sometimes under very stressful conditions a family friend may write it. Sometimes, the family friend has only a little bit of information, or even none. By contributing your old obits to the site, you can help others who may be unfound relatives. In one obit...I have 10 grand children listed..13 great grandchildren noted, but not listed. The great grandchildren would be close to my age..but I don't know who they are. Perhaps..someday.I will know. Barbara in Fairbanks, Alaska; Cosbys in Caistor

I do post obits on my mailing lists when I find them as I believe they do have genealogical significance - especially when the obit is of an older person and it lists their parents' names, etc. I have had a couple of people on my FARRIS list who have found significant connections by contacting the family members listed in the obits. 2. Mario & Barbara Martinez
    3. Hi! This is my first post to the list...I have more than one Cosby line...but...this particular one is my direct ancestor...she is my gg grandmother. I have her name: Matilda, Morelda, Morilda and Marilda. The last version is what she has on her will. She was born to who? I don't know. In Upper Canada (Ontario) to someone. She marries Nelson Haney (born in 1828ish in Pelham, Ontario) before 1842..I think..as they had Daughter #1 by then. As a wife of Nelson Haney....I have lots or records of her existance. Pictures of her tombstone, her will, Census... Before that time...nothing. Nada. Just her maiden name. The ONLY thing I have that links her to a Cosby family (besides her name) is that she and Nelson were witnesses at a wedding perfomed by the Rev. Leonard Haney (Nelson's father). The wedding was of Daniel Cosby who was living in Caistor. Daniel lists his parents as Alex and Ann Cosby...(Not the fellow in Nova Scotia...that was a 100 years too early). Anyway..I hope someone will recognize the name? The family? Help! Barbara in Fairbanks, Alaska

    2. In a message dated 97-10-25 19:26:43 EDT, you write: << Thanks so much for posting this. It helps me to see the ones who were born in NC. >> Wanda, Glad you could use the information. I have the 1860 census as well but it doesn't give the location of birth. If any of those in 1850 were some you were interested in knowing about for 1860 I will gladly get those to you as well or I could just put them all in like the 1850s ........ Linda
