Hello folks! If you are not familiar with the databases found at http://www.ancestry.com, check them out regularly. When they add a new database, they are free for searching for 10 days. Recently, they have added NC Death Index databases, which are wonderful for anyone with NC ancestry. A new one just added is DEATH AND OBITUARY NOTICES FROM THE SOUTHERN CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE 1867-1878, by Brent Holcomb. I searched for COSBY and came up with the following entry: DEATH AND OBITUARY NOTICES FROM THE SOUTHERN CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE 1867-1878 Issue of September 18, 1877 Mrs. Mary Barbara Cosby, wife of Mr. Wm. A. Osborn, and daughter of Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Rebecca White, died near Palmetto, Ga., August 10, 1877. She was the bride of Samuel Arnold. She was again married to Mr. Osborn of Kentucky.
hi to all the members of our Causby Most Wanted list out there. Just wanted to let you know that placing querries on the board works. When I first placed my querry I wsa actually looking for my great grandparents Wingfield and Amamda. Another decendant saw my add and placed one of his own right under mine since he did not know how else to get in touch- he turned out to be a direct cousin of mine, grandson also of Ryland D.T. Cosby and Emily King. (Also of Wingfield M. Cosby) Since then we have gotten together at our family reunion and it was great. We now know were most of the missing links in our family are, so don't give up hope, it may take awhile for the right person to see it and respond but it does happen. Thanks for all your help and support - Marie Cosby-Cobler

The following story (only a part here) was on the internet, on the page the Southern Baptist have for up to date articles pertaining to the current Sunday School Lesson. It quotes an article from PEOPLE magazine. I wrote to another Cosby descendant and she suggested that I put it on the Causby mail and see if anyone knows of this hero (in my opinion). She is a resident of AL and had received a copy of a video on Jesus. This Cosby may not be of my line, but I would claim him anyway! Lanier Ferguson --------------------------------------------------------------------------Ro bert Cosby is a retired Alabama physician. Last year his stock in USAirways took off, giving Cosby a huge return on his initial investment. Amid some opposition, Cosby chose to spend almost 2 million dollars purchasing and distributing a video about Jesus to every single household in his state! One student in Birmingham who didn't like Cosby's action volunteered to gather the tapes, erase them, and donate the cassettes to local schools. Pressing on, Cosby says, "The physical will eventually die, but we can salvage the spirit" (PEOPLE, 6/15/98, 159).
Atlanta Journal Atlanta, GA June 19, 1998 COSBY Mr. Charles R. Cosby, 98, of College Park, died June 17, 1998. He was born January 4, 1900 in Washington, GA and was reared in Atlanta. Mr. Cosby served in WWI and WWII and served as Quartermaster and State Commander of WWI Veterans and Retreads (WWI and WWII veterans). He was a charter member/board of director of the Dekalb Memorial Athletic Association. He retired from Southern Railway after 30 years of service. He is a member of Liberty Baptist Church of Riverdale. He was a very devoted father to his family. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis of 52 years of College Park; a son, Russell A. Cosby of Stone Mountain; daughters and sons-in-law, Valerie and Phil Crosby of Stockbridge, Angela and Robert House of Columbus, GA; grandsons, Jeremy and Nathan Crosby and Andres and Brandon House; several nieces and a nephew. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 20 at Tara Garden Chapel, Rev. Ken Davidson, officia- ting. Interment Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with full military honors. Visitation will be 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Thomas L. Scoggs, Tara Garden Chapel. Jonesboro. 770-471-7171. Atlanta Journal Atlanta, GA June 20, 1998 CHARLES R. COSBY, 98, RAILROAD WORKER, VETERAN By Joel Groover Staff Writer Charles R. Cosby, 98, longed for the days before smog alerts and traffic jams, when most Americans traveled by train. The College Park resident, who worked for Southern Railway for 30 years, always said the railroad was in his blood. Through a steady stream of terse letters to Am- trak and U.S. government officials, Mr. Cosby did what he could to restore the railroads to their former glory. "That was his goal," said his wife, Phyllis Cosby of College Park. "He was forever typing. Sometimes he would type all day long, just like he was being paid-- and he didn't write the letters too kind, either. He want- ed to shake people up." The funeral for Mr. Cosby will be at 11 a.m. today at Tara Garden Chapel. He died of kidney failure Wednes- day at Southern Regional Medical Center. Born in Washington, Ga., Mr. Cosby, whose father was a yard master with Southern Railway, moved with his family to Atlanta as a child. He attended Tech High School and Boys High School and served in Florida during World War I. "He had a job waiting for him at Southern Railway after the war," his wife said. "He started as a clerk and made his living by typing. The last job he had was the one he liked best. Trains would get lost in the rail yard and he had the job of huntin them down to see where they were." Mr. Cosby was drafted into the Army during World War II. He returned to Southern Railway after serv- ing in New Guinea and the Philippines and retired in 1971. Mr. Cosby was state commander of the Retreads, an organization for veterans of both wars. He also was state commander of the World War I Veterans and kept track of the group's dwindling member- ship as quartermaster. He began his one-man campaign for trains several years ago, his wife said. "A lot of peo- ple he wrote to agreed with him," she said. "But they would say that they were only one person and that there was nothing they could do." Survivors other than his wife include a son, Russell A. Cosby of Stone Mountain; two daughters, Valerie Crosby of Stockbridge and Angela House of Columbus; and four grand- children.
If there was ever a doubt that the Rootsweb team works hard to keep our surname lists going, this note should help everyone realize the type of problems they deal with so that we may enjoy the benefits of our mailing lists. It's sad that so much time and money has to be spent fighting off spam, but that seems to be the case. If any of you were around a couple of years ago, you will remember e-mail spammers attacking the Maiser system at Indiana University brought our lists to a complete halt. Fortunately, Rootsweb stepped in and took on the responsibility of housing our lists on their servers. I apologize for the length of this note, but I wanted to send the entire note so you can get a feel for what Rootsweb does for us. Thanks...........Wanda Date: Mon, 15 Jun 1998 19:48:05 -0700 From: Tim Pierce <twp@rootsweb.com> To: listowners-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <19980615194805.E7224@rootsweb.com> Subject: SPAM REPORT: Boy, have we been busy. Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii This was quite a day for the RootsWeb abuse team. famhis@doit.cc, origin@doit.cc, heraldry@doit.cc ================================================ This morning, our old friends in Bath, ID called us up and spammed the bejesus out of our machines with their bogus surname history scams. All of their posts came from a forged `doit.cc' domain, which I blocked as soon as I got word of what was happening... because of serious net lag this morning, however, that didn't happen until well after they'd achieved their goal. Something important to remember: the reason this spam wasn't refused outright doesn't have anything to do with its genealogical trappings. The simple reason that it got through to your lists was that the text and sender of the message didn't match anything that our spam filter recognized as spam. Now that I've added their forged domain to our `spamdomains' list, you shouldn't see anything more from them. CVBOX spam ========== Meanwhile, back at the ranch... this afternoon, a Portuguese spam outfit connected to rootsweb.com and spammed just about every list on our system. Three times each. Over about an hour, they pumped about 4,000 messages and 11MB into our list servers. Thankfully, they're using a well-known spamming software package that was readily caught by our filters, so none of your lists should have been bothered by this. Even as I started to write this message, they started to do it ALL OVER AGAIN. So we had to take more drastic measures, dropping the Internet routes to their systems and blocking any mail from their (forged) domain name. That should prevent them from even being able to connect to our machines. So if I'm a little scarce for a while, you have some idea of why. Getting copies of 4000 spams in your mailbox tends to slow you down a little. All of the RootsWeb Members, Sponsors and Donors out there should congratulate yourselves a little for this. The funds that you've contributed to improve RootsWeb's systems were directly responsible for our being able to implement spam filters like these. If it weren't for your support, RootsWeb's list servers would be a smoking pile of slag right now. Thanks for helping keep us running! Wanda, Thanks for the obituary. I knew this woman and her husband fits into my Cosby family somewhere. I will figure that out later. I have been meaning to write to you again, but have been busy with my own family crisis. My great aunt and uncle have been very ill and he is in the hospital in critical condition. Neither of them are able to be left alone and there is only mom and I to do what has to be done. We have hired sitters to help but that cannot go on for very much longer due to finacnces. I hope that your family is getting better. I still remember all of you in my prayers. Take care and thanks again for the obit. If anyone on this list is researching African-American Cosby lines, I have something that I found that may be of interest to you. It was originally published in the "National Genealogical Society Quarterly", Volume 75, Number 1, March 1987. It is entitled "From Maria To Bill Cosby: A Case Study in Tracing Black Slave Ancestry" by Johni Cerny. It is 10 pages in length and traces Bill Cosby's ancestry It traces his lineage back to a Sam Thomas Cosby, born in Nelson County, VA. Sam was the son of a slave named Maria, who was owned by a John Cosby. If you are interested in a copy, let me know. Derek Cosby has written: >Looking for an Elmer COSBY b. 1885 d. 1944, lived in Farley, MA. Welcome to the Causby-L! We are happy you found us. Have you attempted to find a death certificate on Elmer? If you know the county he died in, you should be able to obtain the death certificate which may have his parents listed as well as the cause of death, birth information, occupation, etc. I hope you find someone who connects to your family here! Hi All! I've got a copy of a COSBY Lineage, unfortunately It's not typed into my computer and the only way I'd be able to provide you a copy is by FAX or snail-mail, I'd prefer FAXing vs mailing, the mailing cost would drain me a bit. I'll Type here a few generation: 1. Robert 2. John 3. Robert 4. John 5. Francis, b. 1510; d. 1580 Children a. Henry b. Alexander c. Arnold d. Catherine 6. Alexander I would like to say that the COSBY spelling of number 1, 2, & 3 was COSSIBEY; #4 was changed to COSBIE; #5. was either COSBY or COSBIE; #5a-d was COSBY and from line #6 on it was spelled COSBY. I hope this wets someone's whistle :) Derek Cosby
