I found Josiah Caudill in the 1870 census for Laurel Springs, Cranberry Twp, Alleghany, NC, family #67 Caudill, Josiah 57 Elizabeth 58 Fanny 25 (might be 20, hard to read) Aris 15 I also found him listed in the 1860 census for Gap Civil, Alleghany, NC, family #326, all born in NC. Josiah Caudle, age 47, M, Farmer Sallie, age 21, F William, age 19, M, Laborer Columbus, age 17, M, Laborer Henry, age 13, M Fanny, age 11, F Aris, age 6, M Fariba? Caudle, age 20, F, Dometic 2 families later, I found the following for John Hollaway Family #328, page 44, census date 18 Jul 1860, all born in NC John Hollaway, age 34, M, Farmer Patty, age 30, F Reid, age 12, M Isaac, age 10, M Amanda, age 8, F Polly, age 6, F Jacob, age 4, M I think these are probably Polly's parents. There is a listing in the 1870 census, close to the Josiah Caudill family for a Patsy Holaway, with daughters Mandy and Perlina, but no husband. I think this may be the same family. Since there is no wife listed for Josiah in the 1860 census, and a wife named Elizabeth in the 1870 census, I'm wondering where Matilda Waggoner fits in. I saw the photo posted by Janet Crain of Matilda, and was quite amazed, since I have the same photograph hanging on my wall. The back of mine says the person is Polly (Holloway) Caudill, taken in 1918. This is not necessarily accurate, since the photo is a copy from a great granddaughter of Polly Caudill, and according to my information, both Polly and Matilda were deceased prior to 1918. If anyone can shed some light on this mystery, please do. Cherie

They are listed next to daughter Drucilla and her husband Owen Hacker in Dripping Springs, Clay Co., KY. I have never been able to find any information on the Caudills, since I didn't know about the "John" in his name. Martha Hacker, daughter of Owen & Drucilla, is my husband's grandmother. She was the first daughter of 10 children, 5 boys and 5 girls. Jenny, I also would love to have copies of Aris & Polly, and also the ones of Drucilla & her sister, and the Waggoner grandmother. When you are able to send these, please let me know and I will be happy to reimburse you. This is a great breakthrough in my family research. Thanks to all of you for all the info. Cherie

Hi! I'm new to these lists. I'm researching a couple of lines for my supplemental SAR applications, claiming descent from James Caudill, Jr. (b. 1753 Lunenburg, VA) and Archaelous Craft, through their children, Nancy Craft and Wm. C. Caudill (married to each other). I'm tying to prove descent from James Washington Pennington (b. 1799 Lee Co., VA; d. OCT 1854 Lawrence Co., KY) and his wife Ellender Caudill, through their son, William "Squire Billy" Pennington (b. abt. 1820 Harlon KY). Does anyone have a copy of James Pennington's last will and testament (showing his son to be William) and/or a death certificate for Ellender Caudill Pennington (showing her parents to be William C. and Nancy Craft Caudill)? In each case the relevant county of death should be Lawrence, KY. Any help or other primary documents would be greatly appreciated. This request is very important, and not just for my own benefit. If I can successfully document this information and get these supplemental applications approved, it will open the door for, no doubt, hundreds of other descendants of this Caudill/Pennington line to become members of DAR and SAR. Thank you in advance. Andrew R. Mylott (SAR Nat'l #156158) Roger Sherman Branch, CTSSAR

I am still looking for information on Great Great Grandparents Isom Caudill (born ca 1822) and Nancy Bailey (born ca 1824) who married May 15, 1843 in Morgan County, Kentucky. Isom was the son of Thomas Caudill and Jenny Jane Caudill and I have the Caudill ancestry traced back 4 more generations to Stephen Caudill. I am still looking for clues to Nancy Bailey's parents. I am looking for more information on Isom and Nancy and their children. Apparently Isom and Nancy died between 1850 and 1860 because the children are found in 1860 living with relatives. When and where did Isom and Nancy pass away? The oldest child was Mahala Caudill (my Great Grandmother) born ca 1844, probably in Johnson County, Kentucky. She is found in the 1860 Johnson County, Kentucky census and next found in 1872 living with Husband Columbus A. H. Morgan in Kenton County, Kentucky. There is reason to suspect that this may be a second marriage for Mahala. Looking for information on where Mahala was between 1860 and 1872. Holly Caudill (male) was born ca 1846. Does anybody have information on what became of him? Abner Caudill was born ca 1850. I have some limited information on him but would be happy to learn more. Jane Caudill was born ca 1855. Does anybody have information on what became of her? Any information greatly appreciated, Daryl Polley
