There was more housing there than you are talking about. There was a long row of houses that faced County Line Rd. Plus there was housing that did not have neighbors. I don't remember the name of the road, many of them were given numbers. Judy Lehman

My address was Rte. 2 Box 689-D, Delano, CA. This was back about 1958 until 1968. What I don't know is the name of the road on which I lived. I know it was about 4 miles from Richgrove, where I attended school, and that there was at least one winery on my road. Can anyone help me figure this out? It was a grape ranch with 6 houses, an office, and sheds (or whatever they are called) for housing farm equipment. The families who lived there at one time or another were: Redger(sp?), Moore, Austin, Toner, and I can't remember the rest. One-quarter of a mile down the road was a really tall silver (water?) pipe.

Thanks so much. The article sort of made it sound like the old cemetery was not being used back then (1928). Appreciate anything you might be able to learn. There are a number of Porterville Cemeteries that are all close together. Sometimes it's hard to tell where one ends and another begins. This burying ground may be included in part of these cemeteries. Elvina ----- Original Message ----- From: Sue Silver To: CATULARE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, December 03, 2005 8:08 PM Subject: [CATulare] Cemetery near Porterville Greetings, I came across the following article from Feb. 21, 1928 in the Los Angeles Times. Does anyone know to which cemetery the "old burying ground, the oldest for white people of the district" the article might be referring? Hundreds Visit 'Haunted House' at Porterville. Porterville, Feb. 20. - Within the past few days literally hundreds of person have driven to the "haunted housed" about two miles east of Porterville, just off the Springville Highway, hoping to catch a glimpse of the beautiful young lady, in flowing Greek robes of white with her hair parted in the middle, who is said to appear in an upper window of the two-story building at a certain hour of the morning. Physicians on rural calls, golfers en route to the Monache course, various prominent citizens, "old-timers" in the neighborhood claim to have seen the ghost. The house is a landmark of the district, standing back from the highway in an old orange grove. It was formerly the home of Bat? Guinn, a bachelor who died as he lived, alone, not long since. An old burying ground, the oldest for white people of the district, is near by, while only a few miles away are the ruins of an old Indian village. Tradition has it that the "spirit" may come from either of these cemeteries. More prosaic minds, however, have determined to solve the riddle and people have literally overrun the place, peeking into windows, seeking any solution of the mystery. Inasmuch as the apparition is seen only on very clear, bright days and then only between 7 and 9 a.m., it is suggested that perhaps it is a reflection of some Grecian statue or woman of Biblical times, in the Home of Peace Cemetery on the side of a nearby hill. This is Porterville's new burying ground and has a number of such figures. Thus does modern Sherlock Holmes clear the mystery of the "haunted house." Any ideas? Is the "old burying ground" still there? Thanks so much, Sue Silver, State Coordinator California Saving Graves ============================== Search the US Census Collection. Carrington, sons of Timothy Edgerton & Elizabeth G. Carrington and their sister, Kate Carrington. Timothy was the first postmaster in Yokohl Valley 1881-1883 - I presume he died in the summer of 1883, because the post office was closed for a few months and that is close to the time of his death as indicated in other records - but I have no "proof". According to my ggrandfather, Robert E. Lee Carrington (another of Timothy's sons), George and Walter both died of typhoid pnuemonia about 1893-1894 and would have been about 27-33 years old at death. Presumably Elizabeth died of pneumonia in 1896. Their sister, Kate, died about 1892 of "suppressed menstruation" in her late twenties. I have no information whether or not any of these siblings married or had offspring. I have done a thorough search of the cemetaries in the area and find neither brother, nor their father or mother or sister. If they died of something quite contagious, perhaps they were buried on their own land. I would like any info - obituaries, newspaper articles, etc. about the lives - especially any marriages or births of children - or their deaths. Any leads would be greatly appreciated!! Michele
