A thought that I had, one of the early labor camps, in the late 30s early 40s, during the "Grapes of Wrath" era influx might have been referred to as Oakie Ville because of the number of individuals coming from Oklahoma......???? 3. Thanks, Dan, for all this info. It was an interesting little article and I did learn off list that it is part of the Porterville Cemetery district now. Appreciate the info! Sue ----- Original Message ----- From: dan hogan To: CATULARE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, December 19, 2005 12:30 PM Subject: [CATulare] Re: Cemetery near Porterville Hi Sue and others on this list, Here is the info on your questions. The "old burial ground" mentioned is the old section of the current Porterville Cemetery, and the Home of Peace is the new section added on later, about 1927. Today it is one cemetery. The "old Indian village" were ruins that existed of the old Tule Indian Reservation located on the east side of Porterville, moved to its current location in 1878. The haunted house most likely is the old home of John Hilton, rumored to have been haunted. It was located off of what was then called the Springville Highway, today called Springville Drive. John Hilton was the person who purchased Porter Putnam's first store/inn in 1864 when Porter went to NY to marry his fiance. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/HY.2ADE/1668.2 Message Board Post: Go to www.terraserver.microsoft.com and you can look at an aerial photo of the area for no charge. The address of the school - 20812 Grove Drive, Richgrove - has no aerial photo “find” so just search the city of Richgrove. You can see the oval track of the school, trace back the route you used to get to school and you should be able see the present day Road/Ave your house was on. In Tulare Co. in the rural areas outside city/town limits, almost all "streets" are numbers. "Streets" going east-west are "Avenues" and "streets" going north -south are "Roads". Example of a location- you could have lived on Ave. 16 between Rd 184 and Rd 192. Looking at the photo and topo map and comparing them to a Tulare County road map there looks to be a winery between Ave 0 (zero) and Ave 8. Between Rd 184 and 192. Looks like an on Ave. 4 going west from Ave 184 ends at the winery. The Southern Pacific Railroad tracks run parallel to Ave 4 with a spur to the winery. Hope this helps.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/HY.2ADE/1647.2 Message Board Post: In 1962-63 I was attending Burbank High School and I became aquainted with a classmate whose name was Linda J. Pease. Her mother's name was Edwina J. Pease and they were from Porterville. Being new to California at that time, I had no idea where Porterville was (tho' I later married a boy who was Porterville born and raised.) Looking in my yearbooks, I do not find a photo of her - I don't believe she graduated. Either she dropped out of school or the family moved away. As I recall, this Edwina Pease was a prettty good sized woman - tall, 5'8" or 5'9", not really overweight, but with a large build. She was supposed to have participated in the Powderpuff Derby a number of times and won prizes - there were quite a number of trophies in their trailer home, as I recall, but I never actually examined them. There was never any talk of a husband or father and I never asked questions (it was considered rude to do so in those days). Thinking back now, it is very possible tha! t this Edwina never married the father her child. Despite their obviously difficult financial situation, what was so remarkable was the wonderful, open, easy mother-daughter relationship they had. This may all just be coincidental, but perhaps it sounds familiar. Hopefully it will be another small piece of your puzzle. Best of luck in your search.

Steinhauer sounds familiar. I'm wondering if the houses without neighbors that you mention were the Ranch? We had about, what, about 1/2 a mile to the next neighbor on both sides. Is Lehman your married name and, if so, what was your maiden? By the way, Claudia is the oldest, then Colleen, then me. Claudia is about 6 years older than I am. Claudia married Larry Dunn. So, then, did you know the McGills? Rosie was my age, and I believe her sister's name was Loretta. They lived by the winery. Also, the McNabbs. Pamela McNabb was also my age. She had a much older brother, Dale. I can't remember the name of the winery. Remind me where Sierra Vista Ranch was. I know the name. JoEllen
