Call me stupid but why was bastardy bonds such a big thing in those days? My son had a child out of wedlock. The first time I saw her I called her my little bastard. My wife had a fit. He has since married the mother and had her name changed to Lail. If they had those bonds today-WOW. I don't think they even enforce the law in NC.
