I have also been interested in how to find small creeks mentioned in the older deeds and warrants. In my researching of this subject, I came across 'Retracing the trails of Your Ancestors Using Deed Records' by William Dollarhide. There is a section in this paper on the need to get a USGS (7.5 series) Topographic map of the area that shows watercourses. It was suggested to call the United States Geological Survey map information/order line at 1-888-ASKUSGS. They will send you a brochure of maps that are available for order. I've gotten this far myself, but have not yet ordered the topographic map. Maybe this will help you.
