Do you know if they ("Catawba Cousins") are online? If my Sidney Yount fathered this women's child, it would be my Grandmothers sister or brother. Do you have any other info. on her? Who were the second men C. F. Connor and Franklin Campbell who signed the bonds? What were all of them to each other? Who was this women's parents? I guess this makes me ask a lot of questions, but how else will I know? Thanks, Jean Jondreau
Jean, I have a little information about the Gant/ Yount question. I am descended from both lines. Laura Gant is found on the 1860 census of Catawba County, three year old daughter of Francis Marion Gant (son of Jesse Gant). Francis Marion Gant is married to Jane Conner, daughter of Cornelius A. Conner, always shown as C. A. Conner, thus the bondman on the bastardy bond - he would be the grandfather of Laura Gant. Jonas Cline was the respected son-in-law of Jesse Gant. He was also sheriff for many years and contemporary of Sidney Yount who was sheriff for a short time. When Jesse Gant wrote his will in 1873, his son-in-law Jonas Cline was named as trustee in the administration of his will and had control of the inheritance of Francis Marion Gant, father of Laura. So you can see how the lives of all these people were intertwined. We have no information about Laura after the birth of her illegitimate child, although a thorough census check might shed some light on that question. I just checked the 1880 Catawba County Census and found that Laura is 19 years old, still in the household of her father, Marion Gant. A three year old granddaughter, Betty Ida, is also in the household, right age to be the child mentioned in bastardy bond and child of Sidney Yount. Good hunting!
