VARNER DIES IN FERNDALE ------------- Member of Pioneer Cambria County Family, Rites Thursday ------------- Francis J. Varner, 85, member of a pioneer Cambria County family and a pensioner of the Cambrai plant of Bethlehem Steel Company, died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Augustus H. Varner, his son and daughter-in-law, 822 Ferndale avenue, yesterday afternoon. Pneumonia was the cause of death. Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the A. H. Varner home, Rev. George W. Nicely of the First Lutheran Church to officiate. Interment in Grandview Cemetery will be directed by Lloyd G. Shaffer, Scalp Level, Mortician. Francis J. Varner was born on a farm near Elton on August 3, 1853, as son of John and Mary (Harr) Varner. He was a grandson of Nicholas Varner, one of the earliest residents of Cambria County. Francis J. Varner was twice married, his first wife Miss Elizabeth (Fender) Varner having died a number of years ago. His second wife, Mrs Margaret (Fender) Varner died in Ferndale August 13, 1931. Surviving are two sons -- Charles Varner, whose whereabouts are unknown and A. H. Varner, intermarried with Ruth B. Houghton, at whose home he died. He also leaves three grandchildren and one sister, Mrs Sarah Fisher, Bruce Street, Dale Borough. A brother, Cyrus Varner died a number of years ago. Francis J. Varner worked in the old rail mill many years ago and was retired on pension after 44 years of service.
