    3. Hi Everyone, Several members of the Lail family forum are trying to sort out some of the Catawba County Lail families (most of whom had Burke County roots). To be more specific, we are trying to learn what happened to Rachel LAIL, born about 1843, probably in Burke Co. She may have been the daughter of Joseph and Christina ____ Lowman (a widow who was Joseph's 2nd wife) LAIL / LAGLE with whom she was living in 1850 in Burke Co. Joseph and Christina appear to have died before the 1860 census and their children are very hard to track after their death. We are also trying to determine what became of Rachel LAGLE / LAIL, born about 1843 in NC. She may have been the daughter of John and Leah Hedrick LAGLE with whom she was living in 1860. No census record has been found for her after 1860. Don Lail, a long-time Lail family researcher, has suggested that perhaps Rachel, daughter of John and Leah, may be the Susan R. LAEL, who is living with the ISENHOWER family in Catawba County in 1870. I believe she could also be the Rachel who was the daughter of Joseph and Christine Lail. We are also wondering if the Susan LAGLE who appears in Lumpkin Co. GA in 1880 (unmarried with 2 children named Joseph and Mary) might be the woman who was living with the Isenhowers in 1870. Her age is off by 5 years but that is not a big problem. Don Lail writes: "I think this [Susan R. in the 1870 census] may be Rachel S. [born] 1843 [who was a ] dau. of John 1814. She disappeared after the 1860 census. Note that the middle initial of Susan in the 1870 census entry is R and the middle initial of Rachel in 1860 is S." He has also suggested that part of the answer to Susan / Rachel mystery (if they are in fact the same person) might be found in the Catawba County Bastardy Bonds. He believes that Susan's daughter, Mary C., born abt. 1864 - 1869, was born out of wedlock in Catawba County. One problem with this is that Susan R. has no child living with her in 1870. Of course Mary's age may be incorrect in the 1880 census. A researcher who has posted a family tree for Mary online lists her birth year as 1869. If anyone has a copy of the Catawba County Bastardy Bonds, would he or she please check to see if a bond was posted on behalf of a LAGLE / LAIL / LAEL woman in the late 1860's or early 1870's for a child named Mary? If anyone has any information that might help us solve the puzzle, we would be most appreciative. Regards, Teri Tillman 1850 U.S. Census Rachel LAIL, believed to be a daughter of Joseph LAIL and Christina ________ Lowman LAIL, was 7 yrs. old at the time of the 1850 U.S. Census (Burke Co.) Rachel S. LAGLE, believed to be a daughter of John and Leah Hedrick LAGLE, was 7 yrs. old at the time of the 1850 census (Catawba Co.) 1860 U.S. Census Rachael LAGLE, believed to be a daughter of John LAGLE (deceased) and Leah Hedrick LAGLE, was 16 yrs. old at the time of the 1860 U.S. census. There is no sign of Rachel, believed to be a daughter of Joseph and Christina LAIL, in the 1860 U.S. Census. 1870 U. S. Census Susan R. LAEL Clines Twp., Catawba Station P.O., Catawba Co., North Carolina National Archives micropublication M593, roll 1128, page 529 Susan R. is a 25 year old single North Carolina-born white female living in the home of Martin and Margret ISENHOWER where she is working as a servant. Also living in this household is a 20 year old single white North Carolina-born male, David HUDSON, who is working as a farm laborer. This is probably the David M. HUDSON, age 10, listed as "bound" and living with Martin and his family in 1860 (Catawba Co.) He may be the same David M. HUDSON listed as a servant with the Edmund SMITH household in Caldwell Co. in 1880, though that David's age is listed as 23. He is listed as married in that census but there is no sign of his wife. 1880 U. S. Census Susan LAGLE Shoal Creek Twp., Lumpkin Co., Georgia National Archives micropublication T9, roll 156, ED 147, SD 7, page 371A, page 13 hand-written in upper left-hand corner, dwelling 93, family 96 Date of enumeration: 09 June 1880 Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace Susan LAGLE Self S Female W 40 NC Works On Farm UNKNOWN NC Mary C. LAGLE Dau S Female W 16 NC Works On Farm NC NC Joseph LAGLE Son S Male W 2 GA NC NC I have no idea what took Susan Lagle to Lumpkin Co., GA by 1880. Perhaps a relative or acquaintance from Catawba or a neighboring county was already living there and helped her get established when she arrived. I am listing the surnames of other North Carolinians living in Shoal Creek in 1880 Some of these are no doubt misspelled or mis-transcribed. Perhaps one of you will recognize one of these as a Catawba family known to have moved to Lumpkin Co., GA. BANGGUS, BARNES, BURGESS, CLEMENTS, ELLIOT, EVANS, GILBERT, HATFIELD, KANADAY, MCGEE, MCREE, PARRISH, PECK, REDMOND, SMITH, STRINGER Susan LAGLE appears to have died before 1900. Her daughter Mary remained in Georgia where she apparently married a James B. Phillips. She is buried in Georgia. Her son Joseph moved to Birmingham, Alabama, by 1900. Some of his descendants continue to live in Alabama.
