JACOB LAFAYETTE LITTLE AND MANERVA CORINDA ADELINE CLONINGER SHERRILL LITTLE FAMILY NO. 474 P. 307 Jacob Lafayette (Fayett) Little, son of Jacob Little (4/19/1811--2/1/1892) and Elizabeth Bostian Little (11/10/1811--1/1/1891), was born in 1838 in Alexander County. He had ten brothers and sisters: Polly Eleanora who married David Hinkle; Susan who married Marcus Lippard, David A. who married Delphia Stirewalt, Thomas who married Athelia Bostain, Rebecca who married James Baker, Candance who first married _______ Jonas, then John Moser, P. Solen who married Laura Teague, then later married Ollie Fox. Polycarp H. who was never married; Cicero and Henkle who died in childhood. This family attended Friendship Lutheran Church in Alexander County. Fayett was the great-great-grandson of pioneer Captain Daniel Little. Manerva Corinda Adeline Cloninger, daughter of Thomas Cloninger (5/26/1806--1/13/1871) and Sarah Malinda Little Cloninger (1/28/1818--3/18/1901), was born July 29, 1843. She had four brothers and sisters: Doreus Salena who married Marcus Marion Rowe, Sarah Catherine who married Jonas HUNSUCKER, Thomas Postel who married Mary Madgadene Suttlemyre, and Camelia Eleanore who married Miles Monroe Herman. This family attended St. Stephens Lutheran church in Catawba County where Manerva was baptized in infancy according to church records. Manerva was also a descendent of Captain Daniel Little, being his great-great-granddaughter. Manerva and Fayett were first cousins. Manerva's mother, Sarah, and Fayett's father, Jacob, were brother and sister. They were the children of Peter Little, Jr. (10/9/1779--12/31/1820 and Catherine Hunsucker Little. Fayett and Manerva were married on February 15, 1860, in Catawba County by J. B. Little, J. P. They lived in Alexander County for a short time beside Fayett's father. In November, 1850 they purchased land in Catawba County on Snow Creek where their only child, Ellen Selena, was born August 7, 1861. They attended St. Stephens Lutheran Church after moving to Catawba County. Fayett fought for the confederacy during the Civil war along with his brother, Thomas Little. As of this writing it is not known what company or regiment they served in or when they enlisted. In the last known letter written by Fayett to a family member (only a portion of the letter remains) he describes the fighting at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia. This battle took place June 27, 1864. It is not known exactly when Fayett was killed; however, he and his brother Thomas must have been home just a short time before his death because their names appear on the communion records at St. Stephens for May 1, 1864. Etta Leona Huffman, granddaughter of Fayett, told family members that he was killed during the Battle of Atlanta. The letters written to Fayett Little by his wife Manerva and his parents, Jacob and Betsy Little, and letters received from Fayett during the time he was serving in the Confederate Army have been kept by descendants of Fayett's only child, Ellen Selena Little Huffman. The letters provide an insight to the thoughts and feelings of the wife and parents of the fighting Confederate soldier and also what the confederate soldier had on his mind while he was away from his family. Excerpts from some of the letter follow: November 16, 1862 Camp Homes near Raleigh Dear father I received your leter an was glad to hear that you was all well I would be glad if you could get somebody to finish my chimly if it haint built an get the dores mad to the house if you can I no newes of imptance to write the people I bleve is tired of this was if this wasent commensed I don think it would ever comence our brigade is a brave looking body of men if they fight as well as they look they will do well though the most of them don't bleve will fight mutch they will do well for gards...
