Hi List, Can anyone tell me about endorsements on marriage bonds? What was their purpose, when did they occur, and who wrote the endorsement? For instance, the Lincoln Co. bond for my John Bell and Susan Cloninger dated 10 Sep 1840 has this note: (end 1843) The bond for John Tetherrow and and Eliza Glammer (no doubt Clemmer is meant) has no date, but the statement: Endorsement in same hand as on bond of 1803. Now we know that John and Susan Bell were married in the fall of 1840. The question arises as to when John and Eliza Totherow were married - 1803 or earlier. The 1800 Census shows John Totherow, Jr. with a wife and child. Was this a previous marriage, or was this Elizabeth Clemmer Totherow and child? We know the Clemmers had arrived there by at least December 1798, so there was time for John and Elizabeth to meet and marry and have a child before the 1800 Census. Will appreciate any info.
