She was a native of Gaston County, daughter of the late John Lester and Bertha Lineberger Cloninger, sister of the late Ralph, Paul H., Thomas, Elmer, Maurice and Roy Cloninger and Merlin Mauney, Verlie Thornburg, member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church, retired school teacher, graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College and Appalachian State University, where she was a basketball star. SURVIVORS: Daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Ann and John B. Abernathy, Alexis, Rebecca and Ray W. Hovis, Stanley; son and daughter-in-law, Jacob Paul and Carolyn P.
