    1. [CATAWBA-WEST] William Yoder, Mattie Michals, RL Correll
    2. Carolyn Lyson
    3. I am trying to find information on a William Yoder, b. abt. 1857 in or near Catawba to Elizabeth and Abel Yoder. He married Martha (Mattie) Ann Michals in 1880. Mattie and their three children, Jessie, Carrie and Willie, all appear in Oregon ca. 1895-1900. At this point, Mattie is married to a Robert L. Correll. also of NC. Family stories have it that they came out West via Texas, spending some time there. What I am trying to discover is what happened to William. I found him in the census with his mother prior to marriage, but have found nothing after. He may have died in NC and she remarried there, or perhaps he died on the trek to the west. Whatever happened to him, it appears (based on census records) that Mattie remarried around 1887. If anyone could help shed light on the issue I would much appreciate it! Also, if there is any information on movements west via Texas, I would love to learn more about it.

    3. Dear List, Would like to learn the parents of John T. McDaniel, born about 1854, and married Mary Kiziah Williams, born about 1858. They appear in the 1910 Census of Cleveland Co., NC, with seven children, and the statement that there were 12 living children. Children at home in 1910: Carrie A., b. abt 1886; Rosie J., b. abt 1890; John S., b. abt 1892; Bessie, b. abt 1894; Julius B., b. abt 1895; Lucy, b. abt 1899; and Julia, b. abt 1901. Mary Kiziah was the daughter of Hannah Morrow and Ainsley/Ensley H. Williams, married in the 1850's. Hannah grew up in Chester County, SC, and this couple lived in York County, SC. Hannah was a sister of my gr-gr-grandfather, David Porter Morrow. Would like to learn the other children of John T. McDaniel and also his parents. Will appreciate any help. 1. [CATAWBA-WEST] Laban Hallman
    2. Nancy Cason
    3. Hello, I have been following the discussion of the Laban Hallman family. Daniel Hallman b. 1796, son of Anthony Hallman and Elizabeth Gingery/Gingerich, m. Sarah Cline 29 Nov 1818, and thus could be the father of Laban Hallman, b 20 Sep 1823. I have no documentation to prove this, however. This Daniel Hallman is the brother of my ancestor, Jacob Hallman. I have the 1860 census Caldwell Co., Lenoir twp. for L Hallman, wife Avey, children Robert (14), Noah (12), Sarah (10), Charles (4), and Mary (1). L. gives his age as 36 and Avey's as 35. I do not have the census records for intervening years, but the 1900 census for Hickory Township, Catawba Co., gives Laban Hallman b. Sep 1823, with wife Nancy E., b. Jul 1834. No children are listed. She has had 8 children, 7 living. It states that they have been married 28 years. That would place their marriage date as 1872. If anyone has census records for those 1870 and 1880, it would be helpful. Nancy (Hallman) Cason, Texas

    2. Chantae Matthews
    3. I posted a message a while back looking for information on Frank L. Matthews, Jr. His father was Frank L. Matthews, Sr., m. Fannie Ella Sigman. Franks, Sr.'s parents were Jonas and Candace (Pope) Matthews. Jonas' parents were Levi and Melinda (?) Mathis. Candace's parents were William and Susan (?) Pope. Right now I am looking for information on Levi and Melinda. I have found Levi and Melinda with family in the 1850 Catawba County census, but I have been unable to find where they are buried. Their daughter, Elizabeth A., Jonas and Candace are buried at Bethel Lutheran Church in Claremont, however I can not find Levi and Melinda. They are not listed in the cemetery index, but it is easy to imagine that they are buried at Bethel sans a headstone. Looking for any information. I have hit a brickwall, and looking for any possible leads. I am willing to share my information. I am hoping their are some new people on the list that may be looking for the same information. Thanks for any help, Chantae M. Gooby __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Exclusive Video Premiere - Britney Spears http://launch.yahoo.com/promos/britneyspears/

    3. Like many of the unusual names given during the last few centuries, Laban is of Biblical origin. Laban was the brother of Rebeckah with whom Jacob stayed during the period of trouble with his brother Esau. (Genesis 27:1-40). --Derick ----- Original Message ----- From: "The Cooks" <pepperhead1@cox.net> To: <CATAWBA-WEST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, November 01, 2003 11:07 AM Subject: [CATAWBA-WEST] origin of given name Laban.? > Hello! 3. Ann, Daniel Hallman and Mary Lontz were married 5 February 1824 so Laban born in 1823 wasn't likely to have been their son. Daniel's wills don't mention Laban, but he was clear that he had been married twice (to Mary and Sallie). This suggests that Laban was not from an earlier marriage. There was at least one other Daniel Hallman in the area at that time -- perhaps Laban was his son? Jan

    3. Hello Ann In partial answer to your puzzles: I have looked very carefully at the original 1880 census and that name is not Blarney but Bloomey which sounds exactly like Blumy, so if nobody spelled it for the census taker [who was W.P. Ivey] he probably wrote it like he heard it. The child is listed as a son age 5. There is also an Elias E. Miller age 29 brother of James M. living in the household Agnes Cloninger On 10/31/03 3:00 PM, "CATAWBA-WEST-D-request@rootsweb.com" <CATAWBA-WEST-D-request@rootsweb.com> wrote: Ann Propst, Brevard, NC Question-where was Mary Jane's and James Monroe's son, Blumy W. From my work on the 1860 Webster Co, MO, census I would say it its often impossible to distinguish between lower-case "um" and "orn" - depending on the penmanship of the copier in those days. 3. Hi, Need input on what happened to Lillie E. Hallman, age 10, that is listed in the household of Noah W. Hallman and wife Jane, who m. 7 Apr 1870, Household #66 Family #77 at 1880 Catawba Co., NC Census, p. 28. I have a feeling that she might not be their natural child. According to "Catawba Co, NC Bastardy Bonds and Records, 1868-1911..." compiled by Anne W. McAllister & Priscilla Hintze on p. 135 in year 1871 Adolphus M[onroe] Punch and Mary J. Hallman are listed. I have a Mary Jane Hallman d/o Henry M. and Anna B. Hallman, b. in 1852 who later m. James Monroe Miller in 1874. This Mary Jane Hallman died in 1879. James Monroe Miller married Mary Jane's sister, Jemima Catherine Hallman in Feb. 1880. However, Lillie is NOT in that household in 1880. Question-where was Mary Jane's and James Monroe's son, Blumy W. Miller in 1880? Is he the Blorney W. Miller, age 5, listed on page 80 in 1880 Catawba Co. census in James M. and Catherine, along with a brother of James Monroe, Elias E. "Eli" Miller? Also, I want to keep my Laban Hallmans straight. I have Laban Hallman, s/o of Daniel Hallman & Sallie Cline, b. 20 Sep 1823 m. Ava M. (unk.) who died 1869. Is this the Laban Hallman who m. Nancy Evoline Pitts between 1870-1880? I also have a Laban Hallman s/o of Daniel Hallman & Mary "Polly" Lontz, b. 1823. Where have I messed up or, are there really two of them? Ann Propst, Brevard, NC

    3. Ann, The name Lontz evolved into Lantz after the early 1800s. I use Lontz since that is the form in my documentation for Mary. I¹ve also seen Lonce, Lentz, Landz, etc. I think the Barbara Lantz who married John Hoover is the daughter of my Mary¹s half-brother, Samuel Lantz. Are you related to Mary Lontz¹s stepsister Christina Dietz who married John Propst in 1802 or her half-sister Sarah Dietz who married Jacob Propst c 1809? Jan

    3. Ray (and others who have commented on my posting), This is how I arrived at my info: Since I have never seen any original documentation that would indicate Daniel Hallman¹s first wife was a Loretz, my guess is that someone a long time ago was familiar with the Loretz family and incorrectly interpreted the writing on the marriage bond or some other document. This mistake dates back at least to Bynum¹s book on marriage bonds in 1929 and Sherrill¹s ³Annals of Lincoln County² in 1937. Mary/Polly¹s surname on the marriage bond doesn¹t have enough letters to spell Loretz. I¹ve shown this document to a number of people here in Ohio who have never heard of the Loretz family, and they have been unanimous in saying that the name on the bond is Lontz. The death certificate of her daughter Mary Catherine gives her mother¹s maiden name as Luntz. Unfortunately, the death certificate for her daughter Martha Emeline left her name blank, and her other children died before NC issued death certificates. Another piece of evidence is the Lincoln Co. Real Estate Conveyance, C060.40010 (NC State Archives), Vol. 33, p. 42-43, 281-83, 381, and Vol. 34, p. 480-481. These involve the estate of George Lontz and refer several times to Daniel Hallman Jr. and his wife Mary/Polly as George¹s heirs. Her sisters Barbara and Anna who also are sometimes mistaken for Loretzes are among the other heirs. At a couple points during the proceedings, Mary and her sisters were interviewed away from their husbands to make sure they agreed with their husbands want to do. There are also a couple old family stories that I won¹t repeat here since I can¹t verify them and don¹t want to spread any more incorrect info, but they would fit with what is known about the Lontzes and not with the Loretzes. Rev. Andrew Loretz did a have daughter named Mary; but if Sherrill got it right, she was older and married David Ramsour. Also, Rev. Loretz had a son John born in the same year as my Mary Lontz, according to their tombstones; if the dates are correct, my Mary couldn¹t be a Loretz. Daniel¹s second wife was Sarah ³Sally² Keener. They are mentioned a number of times as heirs in the estate settlement for Michael Keener that is in the NC State Archives (complete with Confederate bonds and money). Sarah is buried near Daniel at St. Matthews UCC with stones for 2 children who are probably hers. Three of the children of her daughter Margaret Hallman Hartsoe are also there. I¹m interested in comments or other info. It is entitled, "Reynolds of Indian Creek", but is not in either the Gaston or Lincoln County Libraries. I have spoken with Mr. Graham at the Lincoln County Library about this (in the not too distant past) and he could not locate a copy for me. I know it exists because I had one at one time (but do not have it now). Mr. Caskey died not too long ago and it seems his widow does not have any copies of the book that are for sale. Do you suppose anyone that you know who is associated with getting the second volume of the Lincoln County Heritage book together could find a copy for us? Or if his publishing company might still have a copy to sell? I don't know the name of his publishing company (which I understand is no longer in business now that Mr. Caskey is dead). That may or may not be correct. Maybe someone in the local genealogical society might help find one. Please forward this request to the Lincoln! > County webpage and someone on there might have a copy they'd be willing to sell. > Thank you. > Alta Mitchem Durden > > > ==== CATAWBA-WEST Mailing List ==== > ==== CATAWBA-WEST Mailing List ==== > Sharing info on the region West of the Catawba River, NC > For further info, see http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/ > Our thanks to RootsWeb for hosting this list and web page > >
