THIS IS NOT A HOAX. This is truly a serious matter. Nola's Duffy's son has been awaiting a transplant for a long time and the time is growing short. I compiled excerpts of the Newton Enterprise from 1881-1888, and I could have missed William Yoder's death. The Yoders became devout Lutherans after they left the Reformed Church, so I believe you can find William Yoder. Hi, I have been researching my Jacob Hauss-Hoss family for the past several years. In the process, I have come across a Simon Haas-Hass family, once a part of Tryon County, but now would have been in Catawba County. My search is to identify the Simon Haas-Hass family of now Catawba County in find out if there was ever any connection to the Jacob Hauss-Hoss family of Lincoln County. Also, there is a friend doing research on the Rinck-Hass connection in an effort to identify the correct Henry Hass-Haus who married a Catherine Rinck. If anyone has any info on this, that would be great. Sarah Huss Lantz
In reply to the following: I have a copy of Mcallister's Newton Enterprise extracts dated 1881 - 1888 and there is nothing in there about the death of William Yoder, or about his life nor anything about his wife. So you can scratch that one. I don't know if any of the other papers have similar volumes available. Most public libraries have a service where one can get filmed copies of newspapers from everywhere and for most dates. These services are either free or have a very minimal fee attached. Sometimes all that's necessary is a phone call to discover what newspapers are available. Ask for the reference desk. Church records seldom indicate the cause of death, but if the funeral home that served the family is still in existence they would have that information. Surprising how many of those records have survived. Derick - I do myself! It was on he and Mattie's marriage license: Abel and Elizabeth Yoder. One of the other list members sent me a "Wm A Yoder" cemetery record which seems to match (1857-1884), in the Salem/Reformed Lutheran Cemetery, I think it was. (I don't have my notes handy.) At any rate, now my greatest wonder is why a man of this age might have died. Would this kind of thing be in church records? Were there things occurring at this time which might have led to an early death? Dear Carolyn, Here is what I have on your William Yoder. He was married in Lincoln County, NC 0n 12 Sept 1880 to Mattie Michael, daughter of Ambrose and Cynthia Finger Michael. His age was listed as 23. I think he may be the Wm. A. Yoder buried in the Salem Lutheran/Reformed Church Cemetery. He was born 14 Aug 1857 and died 9 Apr 1884. He is buried near several Michaels and Fingers. This cemetery is just south of the Catawba County line on the Startown-Lincolnton road. I find Jessie O. Yoder in the 1900 Oregon Census in Marion County, Breitenbush Pct., age 19, born NC, working in a sawmill. Derick, I don't have the parents of Lizzie Jarrett, as I worked more on a Daniel Jarrett. I found a book which might tell that I think is in the Newton Library. "A Partial History of the Jarrett Family:". by Jay G. Jarrett and Morris S. Yoder. This book should have a Yoder-Jarrett marriage. Abel Yoder was born in 1818 and was killed in the Civil War. Their youngest child was William Yoder. ABel Yoder married Elisabeth "Lizzie" Jarrett. Information from Fred r. Yoder's "history of the Yoder Family in North Carolina". A new history of the Yoder family is being compiled by Chris Yoder.
