    3. Just for the record - you are talking about the Dunkard branch of the Church of the Brethren which was founded in 1708. There is a Brethern site on RootsWeb.com. It might be worth while to do a search and/or post a message there. Supposedly there was only one known Dunkard (aka German Baptist) Church in Lincoln County. BRETHREN-L-request@rootsweb.com or go to http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Religion/BRETHREN.html Much more information available Google or any other online search engine. 3. Dear Mary and others, The document comes from the NC Archives, 060.326.4, Lincoln County Criminal Actions, in the 1822 case of the State vs. Lawson Henderson. The document is dated 17 Aug 1826. The relevant information is at the beginning: "The Rev'd Lawrence Lenhardt a member of the Dunker Church, being conscientiously scrupulous of taking an oath, solemnly affirms that sometime in the winter of 1822-23 as well as he now remembers he went to Lincolnton..." My descent is through his son John, who married Susanna Kistler in 1816 and died in 1825, leaving five orphans Ann, Eliza, Lawrence, William and Eve; their uncle Daniel Lenhardt became their guardian on 16 July 1827. Anna Lenhardt mar. David H. Craft; Lawrence Kistler Leonhardt mar. Jane M. Reid, Mary L. Reid, and Mahalia Baird, all of Gaston County; William R. Leonhardt mar. Annie England Carpenter; and Eva Susanna Leonhardt mar. Henry Summitt. Does anyone know of Eliza Leonhardt? Knowledge of the Dunker affiliation was not passed down in my family line. Did persons in other branches of the family know about this? 3. Pat, Agnes, and fellow list members, I am a descendant of the Lawrence Leonhardt, Dunker Minister, that was mentioned in a recent message to the list. I would appreciate any additional information that anyone might have on this ancestor. I would also like to order a copy of the 1820's civil court record that mentions Lawrence as a Dunker Minister and would appreciate specific information about the book and/or page number(s) to obtain the record. Thank you! Mary Casper

    3. Agnes B.Y. I don't want to get Agnes C. confused. Yes, I would like the information on the Dunker Ministers. If you have spent time with Mark Smith's work on St. John's Lutheran Church you might recall the information abnout Lebanon Lutheran Church which was located on the east side of Little Mountain, between the mountain and Killian's Cross roads, Highway 16 and 150. The original church was located next to the Cronicle Post Office which was at the spring behind the present day Mt. View Baptist Church. It appears that the Lutherans moved up on the hill behind the Cemetery and later gave up the site to the Methodist Church which is still there today. When you visit the Mt. View Cemetery it is obvious that the older grave markers at the back of the cemetery were the original Lebanon Lutheran Church. I have also learned that there were so many small worship centers that it was not unusual that the Luthereans yielded to the Dunkers and worked with others in order to develop a much stronger Congregation of believers. At this Moment I am seeking help with St. James Lutheran Chgurch north of Crouse, NC and Hebron Church near Buffalo Creek west of Cherryville. Thanks to Mrs. Doris Roof I have had the opportunity to visit the Cemetery and location of St. Lukes Lutheran Church which is located between Crouse and Kings Mountain. This location is near land where members of my Mother's Plonk Family lived and farmed All bits and pieces of information about the Churches west of the Catawba would be appreciated. I have found information and talked with a person who knows about an abandoned Lutheran Church near the Catawba River between Oxford Dam and Lake Lookout. I am going to have to get permission to do some walking because I can not see the cemetery from the nearest public road. Glad to help with your Bell relative. Pat C. It was a good picture of Thelma, probably made in the 1980's. Thank you. While this doesn't provide a place of worship, in which you mentioned an interest , I wonder if you have heard that there were Dunker ministers in Lincoln County, Henry Rhodes and Lawrence Leonhardt. I believe Henry Rhodes was mentioned in Col. George Yoder's writings. A few years ago, an 1820's civil court suit in Lincoln County was found, which mentioned that Lawrence Leonhardt would affirm his testimony, since he was a Dunker minister. He bought land in Lincoln Co. in 1791 and died there in 1832. We haven't yet learned where he came from. If this is of interest, I can send you a copy. 1. [CATAWBA-WEST] Catawba County Surname Resources
    2. Derick Hartshorn
    3. Folks, When I announced an expanded Surname List, I hadn't expected such an expression of appreciation. I received many messages of thanks. Several folks reminded me of dead links, misspellings and a gross error in a text-based descendant list. With so many tasks, checking for dead links has taken a back seat to others jobs. I have devoted the past week to getting this surname resources back up to speed. I'd like to call your attention to the four pages that I have been working on: 1. Catawba County Surname Research http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/ccgsfam.htm This page has been neglected as a result my inattention as well as the disappearance of some previously valuable sites. The surname resource page is reserved for specific single-surname histories and web page links on same. I have created some descendant lists from my database which I offer "as-is." If you have any surnames you would like submitted to the list, please let me know. Please also let me know immediately if you find any dead links or errors. In addition to dead links on the surname resource page, here are some actions I have taken: COBB/COBBS Family Genealogy (Mike Cobb) / Not found - link removed. CLINE/KLEIN family of Sebastian CLINE (John S. Yoder, II) / Not found - link removed. Can someone supply a CLINE family tree? HEFFNER Family Association - Kenneth William 'Ken' HEFFNER passed away in San Antonio, Texas on September 24, 2002. He was born in Rodersville, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania on May 21, 1930. Ken was the HEFFNER Family Association Historian until he took ill in 2001. I'm sure he will be dearly missed by his family and the genealogical community who have shared and benefited from his genealogy works. - link removed. If anyone has a HEFNER/HEFFNER/HEAVNER site, or information they care to share, please let me know. HETRICK/HEDRICK, John H.- Descendants (Shirley Susan Head Daveshwar ) / Not found - link removed. KELLER, Jacob Family (Arthur Victor Keller) / Not found - link removed. -------------------- 2. Catawba County Resource Center http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/search.htm I have tried to list major research topics. Some URLs on this web site are external links. Again, if you know of additional helpful links or you spot an error, please let me know. -------------------- Several folks wanted to have their surname listing added. Perhaps I failed to identify the Catawba County, NCGenWeb page options. If all you want is your choice of surname listed, this is for you. 3. Catawba County Surname Listing http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/surnames.htm This page was last revised 17 Mar 1998. Why? Because I guess nobody knew it was there. I will be happy to reactivate this page if folks want to be listed as a surname reseacher. -------------------- 4. Western NC Family Histories outside of Catawba County http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/link06.htm This page was added as a catch-all to accommodate folks who focus on an area or surname beyond the Catawba Valley. If anyone can suggest additions or corrections, write me. ------------------------ Each of these four pages has incorporated a feedback section. Your message to me will be given priority as long as the subject matter of your post is cued to the message subject I have inserted. I'll try not to let these get so out-of -date if you help me. To establish the trail, The Catawba Co. I'm posting what will, hopefully, be the start of a helpful database of research information and personal contacts. The URL is http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/ccgsfam.htm Many of these surnames point to links. Others are personal attempts (including mine) to give guidance to known family trees. None are guaranteed as to accuracy (blah, blah, blah: genealogical legalese) but hopefully they will be helpful. I will gladly add any genealogical link or submission that includes the name of the author and a willingness to accept e-mail correspondence from readers. Anyone posting should be prepared to provide references, if available. Best wishes, and thanks for making this a premier list, --Derick

    3. I have found this bit of information: Lincoln County Deeds - page 443, 20 Jan 1825: John Coulter Esq, as sheriff of Lincoln Co., to John Wilfong Jr., $22.25 for land sold at public auction on 19 Jan 1824, to satisfy a debt of William Dealasnyder to Jonn Wilfong and Son Co., of $47.61, land on Lyles creek at Andrew Yount¹s corner and Lourances to Griffith Edwards line and Laflors or Lofons (sp) corner to Peter Younts lower survey line. It being Delasnyder¹s 1/7 part/share of 200 acres part of land granted to Peter Yount in 1782. Does anyone know about this Peter Yount and/or the identity of the other heirs in this matter, or the names of the children of Peter Yount and whom they married? One of the other heirs was Solomon Deal's wife Sarah Yount Deal: Lincoln County deed ³Dealsnyder¹s 1/7 part or share of 200 acres, previous court record having named Solomon and Sarah Deal as also being part owners of land granted to Peter Yount in 1782 (Solomon married Sally Yount and the bond is dated 29 June 1815) I presume that the Peter Yount mentioned in the 1825 document was also a son. Any help welcome. Agnes Cloninger

    2. I just joined this list and hope to find out more about NC pre Rev War.. and afterwards.. I descend from John Tucker who was in Tryon County 1770s. He died 1800 in Lincoln Co. His wife at the time he died was Ann Gilkey who I believe was a sister to Robert Gilkey of Rutherford Co. I am also interested in Nicholas ILER. He lived in Mecklenburg Co. them Lincoln Co. I believe either his daughter or his ward Elenor McCord married John Tucker Jr. Sophia Tucker married John Hutchison Harry in Lincoln Co in 1828. I descend from them. John H. Harry joined the Texas Army as a Captain and took 78 volunteers to Texas from this area in 1836. Does anyone have family that went to Texas from NC at that time and might have been one of his volunteers? Betty Vaughn

    2. Ann Propst
    3. Hi, all- Merry Christmas. In reading over the Will of Lawson Fry of 14 Aug 1871, I noticed that in the listing of children that Louise Elvira "Lou" or Lucy" Fry b. 18 Mar 1851 (who m. Daniel Anderson Finger in 1873 and no parents were listed for the bride or groom) is not included in his will which is strange unless they had some sort of "falling out". She was listed in the 1860 & 1870 Catawba County Census in the household of Lawson. I am wondering if this child is really the d/o Neely Davidson Fry and Ruanah (or Rosanna) Eliza Cline Fry. Does anyone know the real parents of Louisa? I didn't see anything in Betty & Edwin Camin's NC Bastardy Bonds book. Ann Propst, Brevard, NC

    1. [CATAWBA-WEST] Re: Eckert/Eckerd/Traffenstadt Discussion, Please read
    2. L Eaker
    3. Greetings: I've been watching the 'scussion and discussion about the Eckert and Traffenstadt family. Here are my thoughts: I agree that Nicholas Fry's so mentioned "step-daughter" could easily be a daughter in law, but have no idea how, although the actual answer could well be hidden in the large collection of material that has come in since GSP was published in '94. I have not had time to view any of it, just stuffed it in file drawers and notebooks until I can get to it. A good place to start solving this would be to look at early land records (including chain bearers, witnesses, etc.) in the many published volumes of land abstracts for Lincoln and Rowan Counties. Now for Anna Barbara Eckert wife of Christian Traffenstadt: I am not sure how I came about that information but it must certainly have some validity since there is a month date of DEC 1751 and I don't make up dates. Anything that is uncertain would have the notation "ca" in front of it. Since Adam Eckert married twice in Frederick Co., MD and the long time theory is that he and Barbara were siblings, it could well be that I found it in MD records. If that is true I may have copied it at the same time as Adam's information and just used one heading as for document, then when I copied it off index style to include in the family records, I failed to include the source for the Traffenstadts.(Just a thought) Now I have a whole storage box of spiral binders of research notes over the past 40 or so years, you would be welcome to have a look! The only other alternative would be that I might have found that in Christian's estate file in Rowan Co records, but rather doubt that since I had pulled out my Hahn records from that file so many years before and did not go back to it when doing the book. HuH! OH! I just remembered that in one of my forays to Raleigh I met a Traffenstadt researcher who shared about 100 pages of family records with me. After the book was published I had no use for them and happened on to another descendant who needed them and passed them on to her. I could have gotten the date from this man. However I don't recall his name. I do remember that he lived in Raleigh and was active in the Traffenstadt reunion in Catawba Co. His first name might have been Jim. He was a descendant of Peter and Mahala. Dates contributed by family members seldom include a source. Adam Eckert's son Martin is named in his will. I would suggest that you look in Frederick Co. records to begin with. I only recall two sources that I used for this area. The largest was a series of newly published MD records I found at the McClung Collection In Knoxville, TN and the other was a roll of film that someone had ordered in through the local Family History Center here in Kingsport, TN and I happened on to it while it was on loan. Both of these events occured as I was closing out the research for the book. Hope this helps in some way. There are so many yet unanswered questions about these German Speaking Families and so many of them that did not get in the book because I could not prove at the time they were German Speaking. I still hope to do the supplement to GSP but find it more expedient at my age to get some order to my files (12 file drawers plus storage boxes) and decide how to preserve them for posterity and properly dispose of the originals. Could use a whole bevy of secretaries. Volunteers anyone? Happy Holidays, Lorena PS: I sent this out last night but it did not appear anywhere. If this is a duplicate, I'm sorry. However this does have more notes in it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Agnes B Yount" <alby6@juno.com> To: <agnesec@cableone.net>; <renas@usit.net> Cc: <CATAWBA-WEST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 17, 2003 4:34 PM Subject: Re: [CATAWBA-WEST] Re: Eckert/Eckard Dear Agnes, Lorena In "German Speaking People...", Lorena Eaker states that Christian Traffenstadt m. 1. Re: [CATAWBA-WEST] Re: Eckert/Eckard
    2. L Eaker
    3. Greetings: I've been watching the 'scussion and discussion about the Eckert family. A good place to start solving this would be to look at early land records (chain bearers, witnesses, etc.) Now for Anna Barbara Eckert wife of Christian Traffenstadt: I am not sure how I came about that information but it must certainly have some validity since there is a month date of DEC 1751 and I don't make up dates. Anything that is uncertain would have the notation "ca" in front of it. Since Adam Eckert married twice in Frederick Co., MD and the long time theory is that he and Barbara were siblings, it could well be that I found it in MD records. If that is true I may have copied it at the same time as Adam's information and just used one heading as for document, then when I copied it off index style to include in the family records, I failed to include the source for the Traffenstadts. (Just a thought) The only other alternative would be that I might have found that in Christian's estate file in Rowan Co records, but rather doubt that since I had pulled out my Hahn records from that file so many years before and did not go back to it when doiing the book.
