Thanks to all who responded to this. I'm researching Jacob Starr (1755? - 1833) from Lincoln Co. I don't know what area he lived in. (I could probably figure it out from the deeds, but I'm not very familiar with the landscape in Lincoln Co.) I recently received information that he may be connected to Guilford County Starrs and their records were in the Brick Reformed Church there, so I thought perhaps I would find church records for Jacob in Lincoln. The census records for Jacob indicate that he had more than the 3 children listed in his will, sons John, Jacob, and Phillip and his wife was still living in the 1830 census, but I don't have his wife's name. The following is from another Starr researcher in Indiana - I have not proven Jacob's parents yet, but I suspect Johannes & Elizabeth (Yoakum) Starr, last found in New Hanover, PA. John Jacob Starr of Guilford Co, NC, and Casper Starr of Rowan & Surry Cos, NC, are proven brothers. Jacob Starr of Lincoln Co, NC, is much younger, and I feel he is a nephew of the other two. I am presently collecting material to write a book on our German Starrs. I wrote one in 1982 on the descendants of John Jacob Starr. This new book will include the descendants of John Jacob Starr, Casper Starr and an older brother, Johannes (John) Starr. On the Frys you have dug out of Lincoln Co, NC, - they are sons of Johann Nicholas Fry JR, who died 11 Jan 1784 in Lincoln County. Johann Nicholas Fry SR was on the 1738 ships passenger list of the Queen Elizabeth with Johannes Starr SR, that I mentioned earlier. Of the other Indiana Starrs you have found living around Philip Starr and his sons, many are descended of the Abraham Starr there. Abraham is a son of Jacob Starr of Bourbon Co, KY. Abraham followed Philip Starr to Lawrence Co, IN, and one report says he lived with Philip for a short time. The relationship has yet to be determined. Any assistance will be gratefully appreciated! Anita, There is a "Diary of Johann Gottfried Arends, 1740-1807", transcribed by Jo White Linn. Arends was a pioneer Lutheran pastor in the Catawba Valley. The diary contains lots of early church records, and is indexed. You can order it from Jo White Linn, P. O. Box 1948, Salisbury, NC 28145-1948. When I bought my copy several years ago, the price was $25.00. Nancy
Yes, there were such churches - mostly called "Reformed" but not always, do you have a name of some folks or a place in the county, many of us have records we can check for you. Germans tended to cluster or to go to whatever church was handy, like everyone else did. Agnes C. My ancestor, Nicholas PARCHMAN/PARCHMENT/PERCHMENT, was in Col Washington's militia around Winchester, VA in 1758. I have no other records for him before 1773 in PA. Family tradition says he was German, but some legends say Scots-Irish. I have been looking for his origins for 28 years. There is one record for an Edward Parchman receiving a Tennessee land grant for service in the North Carolina Continental Line. However, I have found NO other record for this person, and wonder if he is a fictitious person made up as part of the land fraud perpetrateed by powerful and wealthy NC politicians and businessmen (Blount, Davidson, Robertson, etc). I am looking for any records for a Parchman in North Carolina. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Gerry Parchman
In addition, I have dusted off the original St. John's page at the time of the fire: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/stjohn.htm The book is mentioned at the bottom of the page. Until I hear otherwise, I assume that Pat Cloninger will continue to spearhead the book effort. A new page has been erected at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/stjohnbook.htm It should be noted that St. John's has its own web page. http://www.stjohnsconover.com/bic/intro.htm --Derick a friend of Mark ----- Original Message ----- From: <WyleneL@aol.com> To: <CATAWBA-WEST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 23, 2004 8:27 AM Subject: [CATAWBA-WEST] Re: CATAWBA-WEST-D Digest V04 #19 > I am interested in more information about the publication of Mark Smith book > mentioned below. > > Wylene Alston > (WyleneL@aol.com) > > In a message dated 2/23/2004 6:02:23 AM Central Standard Time, > CATAWBA-WEST-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: > > > This Church is intending to reprint the work of Mark Smith within this > > year. Hello Charles --- I don't have any record of this Fanny having married at all, but that may be because I have not looked for it, however, this is the Elizabeth Teffenstadt who married Peter Deal. Fanny seems to have been out of favor with her father, or he had already settled something on her that was considered sufficient. Again, I have not carried my research beyond this point. All I can tell you about Peter is that he was probably the son of one of the Williams, but no one has yet come up with any viable source for that information. William seems to be the parent of William b about 1740 (married Suzanne Ikard), Jacob b about 1743 (m Margaret), George b about 1744, John b about 1746 (m Mary). and Peter born about 1750. These siblings of Peter are speculation, and not my original research. I would like to offer the thought that if this is the same Fanny, and she was born in 1808, then she was plenty old enough to have been married in 1828. I have this will: January Sessions 1828, Lincoln Co, NC: I Peter Deal being of sound and perfect health do this the 9th day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty seven make this my last will and testament in the following words, that is to say, 1st all my property shall remain in the sole possession of my wife Elizabeth Deal so long as she may live to dispose of as need may be to support upon, 2nd, my son Simon Deal shall winter one cow and have all her increase 3rd, I bequeath that after the death of my wife Elizabeth all the property shall be equally distributed among my heirs except Fanny Deal who shall have for her part five shillings. 4th Should the Legatees disagree in the division of the property each one may choose a man for that purpose which decision shall be final. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and (seal) the day and year above written. Peter Deal (his mark) Witnesses Peter Hoke and Martin Ikerd. My note to myself: There must have been other heirs, need to search for the estate records. Agnes Cloninger

I would suggest that you send a Letter to St. John's requesting a copy and that you be notified when the book is available. If there is sufficient interest they would me moved to publish quickly quickly. I Highly recommend this publication if you are interestd in the early families who moved into this area between 1750 and 1800. I am attempting to put together a publication covering all the early German Reformed and Lutheran Congregations that were in this area in those early years. I would be happy to have just a simple message from anyone who would be interested such information as I might compile concerning these Congregations. I have learned about Old Salem Llutheran Church in present Catawba County that even has graves of slaves in the Cemetery. There are many field stones with no names. If you know of the location of early cemeteries with or without names in the original Old Lincoln County I would welcome your information. This would help to direct me as to where I might find the locations of these early churches. Pat C. An interesting Setzer marriage took me a long time to prove. George Naugle, born c1765 in PA or MD, and died in 1824 in Lincoln County, NC. I believe he was buried at Old St. Paul's or on his own land. George Naugle/Noggle/Nail/etc. married Catherine Setzer, born NC c1775 and died after 1850, while living in Chickasaw County, MS, with her daughter,Sarah (Naugle) Huffman. Catherine (Setzer) Naugle was the d/of Jacob Setzer, II, and Maria Elisabeth Hildebrand, and the granddaughter of Jacob Setzer I and Mary Boovey. Jacob Setzer II served in the Revolutionary War from Franklin County, Ga and moved back there in 1816. One of Catherine's brothers, Christopher Setzer, moved there in the 1820's. (Speculation): Catherine may have gone with her brother to join her parents. Question: Polly Naugle, the d/of George Naugle and Catherine (Setzer) Naugle, married a Setzer. Who? I have ordered the Setzer book, but it hasn't come yet.
