Ok - I've consumed my crow willingly.... please accept my apologies and I promise to look before I leap next time! Familysearch.com is an often overlooked resource and that is the first place I look when I try to help with the queries. That's not to say that I believe they always have accurate information, because I don't believe that at all. I have a policy of verifying whatever data I find online, but at least it sometimes get me pointed in a good direction. BTW - for any Starr researchers on this list, I'm trying to prove (or disprove) that Jacob Starr of Lincoln Co. is the same Jacob Starr of Guilford Co. I've found some very compelling evidence so far. If this can be proven, Jacob can be linked back at least 2 more more generations. If anyone is interested in my findings or has some input on the subject, please let me know. Hi, J. A. Fry, age 47 of Catawba Co., NC s/o of Conrad and Nancy Fry m. 22 Dec 1884 in Caldwell County, NC M. Emma Cook, age 21, d/o (father unk.) and Mary Cook. At first I thought this might be John A. Fry, b. 1844 but after 1860 I know nothing more of him. Then looking at his older brother, Jacob Augustus Fry, born in 1836 (now the age 47 of J. A. Fry fits), I have begun to wonder about this fellow. He m. Louisa E. Sigmon in 1857 and had 4 kids that I know of and were divorced. Then he had a relationship with Mary Linnie J. Starr which resulted in 11 kids born 1867 thru 1899! Does anyone know which J. A. Fry is the one that went to Caldwell Co. and married M. Emma Cook and did the marriage last and were any children a result of this union? Ann Propst, Brevard, NC
Hi, Need clarification on parents of Jacob Haas, age 51, who m. Julia Smith, age 35 (d/o of Joseph and Jane L. Smith) on 12 May 1878 in Caldwell County, NC. Jacob's parents listed as Henry and Catherine Haas both deceased of Lincoln Co., NC. I need to know which Henry and Catherine were his parents-Henry and Catherine Plonk Haas or Henry and Catherine Rink Haas (of whatever spelling of surname). Also, Julia's parents originally of Burke County, NC who were also deceased. Were they Joseph M. Smith and Eliza Jane Stamey? Thanks for any assistance. Ann Propst, Brevard, NC
Sorry, Anne--this was a huge oopsie on my part as the eyes rolled down to the wrong Mull as I was going back and forth between drafting my e-mail and my database. I thank you for calling this to my attention as I did want to cite Peter "High Sheriff" Mull. What I did cite, in error, where the years for John (Johannes) Mull. Hi- In the various estate papers of Nicholas Frey is found Conrod Burns' petition in Rowan Co., NC re his wife Hannah Frey Burns (dau. of Nicholas) and her extra marital escapades with Bostian Cline, Jr. of Rowan Co., NC (into GA and back) dated 10 Oct 1774. On this document is the signature as a witness, Francis Palmer who had to have been born way before 1755. One of the other witnesses appears to be Peter Moll (1744-1831). I already know of a William Palmer b. 1777, wife, Sarah Rankin of Rowan Co., NC and children who ended up in Wilson Co., TN, but I don't know who his parents were. To back of a little bit, I am descended from Parmenas Palmer and Mary Ann Draper of Lunenburg Co., VA. Of their sons, William m. Ann Spears and ended up in Union Co., SC as did son, John Thomas, Sr. (my direct ancestor) who. m. Mary Brett who begat Rev. John Thomas Palmer, Jr. b. 1766, who served in the American Revolution as a substitute for his father. Another son, Joshua also went to Union Co., SC. And there were others into Spartanburg, SC area. Parmenas Palmer's father was Robert Palmer and whose youngest son, George (Parmenas' brother) died in Buncombe Co., NC in 1731. It appears that in this generation of sons of Robert Palmer that there was a lot of running from southern VA into NC and SC and back and forth across borders right before the Revolutionary War. HELP! Any insight will be greatly appreciated to find out where Francis Palmer fits into this bunch if he does at all. Ann Propst, Brevard, NC
Folks, I have completed the latest revision of the Burke County Surname List. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncburke/surname-reg.htm It also has a link to the Catawba County Surname List. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/surnames.htm I have included a third column for notes which are also hot links. Please feel free to request a listing on either page. --Derick
My great grandfather's death certificate has an error. Is there anything that can be done. William Lawrence Bolick born and raised in Catawba County moved to Arkansas and remarried there. At his death, his wife who was 29 years younger than he, gave the information for the certificate. His father is listed as Jackarius Bolick and his mother as Mary Emiline Mouser. This is wrong. His father was Jaconias Bolick and his mother was Rhoda Emiline Bowman. Mary Mouser was his grandmother. It is understandable how this could happen. From what others have said he seldom mentioned his family and children in NC and his second wife may have been doing the best she could. The certificate is from 1945. I'd appreciate any thoughts the group might have on this. Sincerely, Cynthia Bolick Gilbert

Dear Ann, I believe Anna Eliza Clarica was the daughter of John Yoder, Jr. and Sally Whitener. There are many mistakes in the Zion baptismal transcripts published in "Catawba Cousins", undoubtedly due to the difficulty in reading the German script. I can see how it would be possible to misread Sally as Polly. For example, my great great grandfather, Levi Franklin Yount, was transcribed as Luther Franklin. In one other instance, George Whisenhunt appears as George Whitener. According to Fred R. Yoder's "History of the Yoder Family in North Carolina, John Yoder, Jr. had a daughter Anna who married John Reep. Her birth date is not listed, but 7 Aug 1823 fits in nicely with her next older and next younger siblings, Daniel M. Yoder born 10 Apr 1822, and Levi Yoder born 29 Nov 1825. There is no daughter Anna listed for John Yoder, Sr. Best Regards, Ray Yount On Wed, 21 Apr 2004 18:23:35 -0500 Ann Propst <annsid@citcom.net> writes: > Hi- > > Ran across a "curious" entry in Catawba Cousins, Vol. 1, No. 1, p > 13, > Zion Lutheran Church Birth and Baptismal Records-"Johannes Yoder and > his > wife Polly a daughter Anna Eliza Clarica born 7 August 1823". > > I always thought that "Anna Eliza born 7 Aug 1823 was the d/o of > Johannes Yoder II and his wife, Sarah "Sallie" Whitener. Hi, again-disconnected by local ISP while sending; hope you don't receive duplicates. Ann Hi, Need clarification of birth and baptismal dates for these two sons of Solomon Deitz and Elizabeth Deitz- Per "Catawba Cousins", Vol. 1, No. 1, pp 15-16 (plus other sources) dates are as follows: Christian Frederick Deitz born 10 January 1827; baptized 31 March 1827 (m. Lucinda Caroline Reitzel) Jonas Conrad Deitz born 25 April 1827; baptized 6 May 1827 (no further data) There were two Solomon Deitz/Dietz in Lincoln Co., NC that I'm aware of-there might be others- Solomon Dietz, Sr. 5 Oct 1762-1822 with at least two wives: (1) Anna Barbara Krimmer; (2) Elizabeth Huffman And, their son, Solomon Deitz, Jr. 1793-1871 who m. Elizabeth Deitz. Is it possible that the first or second Solomon Deitz "adopted" one of the above children? Thanks for any insight. Ann Propst, Brevard, NC
Hi- Ran across a "curious" entry in Catawba Cousins, Vol. 1, No. 1, p 13, Zion Lutheran Church Birth and Baptismal Records-"Johannes Yoder and his wife Polly a daughter Anna Eliza Clarica born 7 August 1823". I always thought that "Anna Eliza born 7 Aug 1823 was the d/o of Johannes Yoder II and his wife, Sarah "Sallie" Whitener. The above one would assume that it was Johannes Yoder, Sr., 1764-1835 (father of Johannes, Jr.) and his wife, Mary Barbara Reep, 1763-1842, making her a mother at age 50 which is not impossible. Is this an error in the Zion Church records? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks. Ann Propst, Brevard, NC
Agnes-- Looking further, I found that (listed with Frances Ann Moose Huitt/Hewitt in 1900) Myrtle Estelle Huitt/Hewitt m. Ray M. Hunsucker 1895-1930 & buried in Conover City Cemetery; and Mary Jane "Molly" Huitt/Hewitt m. a Pinkney Pope. Where I ran across this I can't remember as it's been so long ago. Whether any of this is correct is debatable. I thought it was interesting that two different Lewis or Louis Huitts/Hewitts had daughters with almost same given names. Hopefully, someone over in Catawba Co. can peruse that tombstone in St. James Lutheran Church Cemetery and recheck that date of 1890 or 1899. Ann Agnes-- I have a Myrtle Hewitt b. 28 Jul 1893-13 May 1983 who m. a Morris, and Mamie b. April 1898, d/o Lewis Jerome Hewitt and Cora B. Yount. Perhaps these two young ladies were visiting Frances Ann Moose Hewitt? Hewitt/Huitt and Frances Ann Moose with the date of 30 Jan 1887. In the Catawba County Cemetery books there is a record of the deaths of these two people. The tombstone reading for Lewis says he died 25 Nov, 1890 which puzzles me because when I find Frances Ann Moose Hewitt/Huitt a widow with three children, Georgia b July 1891, which would be ok but there are also Myrtle b July 1895 and Mary b Nov 1896. I wonder if the gravestone reading is in error, and should perhaps read 1899? Does anyone have more information about this couple? Does anyone know what caused Lewis Hewitt/Huit's death?
