Did any of the pastors that followed Rev. J. G. Arndt keep as elaborate records as he did when he was the pastor at St. John's? My wife has a Revolutionary War patriot Sebastain BOLCH who was a member at St. John's. He resided on Lyle Creek nearby. He died in 1822 which was after Rev. Arndt's death. Sebastain's wife Maria Margaret Hanna HEFFNER dies in 1830. During this time period people did not want headstones with their names on them to prevent the devil from finding them prior to resurrection morning. This couple could possibly be buried on their plantation, but no one knows. Hence my on the surface dumb question. I realize there have been several fires at this church over time; maybe a record of what I am seeking could have been destroyed as result. Could the NC Lutheran Synod Archives in Salisbury have such diaries-records. Then too it is my understanding that the senior volunteer researcher there passed away recently. Anyone out there willing to comment or am I barking up an impossible tree?
Some years ago I remember someone writing about a murder in the area of a black man over some moonshine. It was mentioned that this was done by two white brothers named WHITE. Anyone have name of murdered man, names of the WHITE brothers, when and where? Also, my 3rd gr. grandfather was murdered in his home, decapitated and house burned down. His name was John Cline and I believe he was living in the Lenior, NC area. He was born in 1786 but I do not have his date of death. Does anyone know more about this murder and if it was ever resolved? Norma Mahaney
We often read of restrictions being placed on access to public records by elected officials. Lisa Lail, candidate for the Catawba County Register of Deeds has included the following in her campaign flyer: "PRESERVATION OF PUBLIC RECORDS FOR FUTURE GENEALOGY RESEARCH Citizens research documents on a daily basis to trace family records. It must be made a priority to preserve these public records for future genealogy research". This is not an endorsement of the candidate, just an observation. --Derick

I'm researching any/all of the above in Catawba & surrounding counties. Any help with my Basil Dorsey who marr Mary Robinson, lived in Lincoln/Catawba Cos & moved to Franklin Co. GA will be appreciated. Basil was in the Rev War. There were 2 Basils though & all records on mine give the info of the other. Mary was the dau of Isaac & Catherine ? Robinson also of the same area. They were closely associated with Bakers & Harrisons. Thanks, Diane Ethridge Conroe, TX

I am happy to have found this list whether I have ancestors there or not. Maybe the Catawba Valley settlers knew some of my ancestors. My mainline family is Stanley, from England to New Kent/Hanover VA. They married: Maddox-VA Crew-VA Hilton-MD Moore? Hall-PA Eaton-PA Adams-PA Humphreys? Springer-PA-DE Wilcoxson-PA-DE West?-MD Cranfield?-DE Swartzlander-PA Hatchett? Sutton, I think NC coastal area to Orange/Alamance NC All but the Suttons and Hatchetts settled in the Rowan/Davie Co. area and most stayed there through the generations. Gerri Ann
Could someone tell me some of the surnames being researched on this list please. Thank you, Gerri Ann
Greetings! Some more information has come to light to solve some of the Cline puzzle and I'm passing it along. Thanks to Robert who passed it on to me. Anyone having an interest in this family should conact Robert at wirenut@alltel.net for more information. When I did "German Speaking People West Of The Catawba River In NC 1750-1800" (which is now back in print) I was unable to solve the mystery of which Cline family that Catherine, Wife of Christopher Sigmon, belonged to or even which Christopher Sigmon was involved. The reason being that her father Martin (and brother of Valentine) had left the area of Lincoln Co and moved to Sumner Co., TN. The problem is solved by Sumner Co., TN DB 12 pgs 350-352 and Lincoln Co., NC Court Sessions of July and Oct 1828: This Indenture made this 6th day of July 1828 between Rachel Cline and Michael Cline and Margaret Cline his wife, John Cline and Catherine Cline his wife, Adam Cline and Sarah Cline his wife, and Christopher Sickman and Catherine his wife, his legal heirs & test relicts of the estate of Martin Cline of Sumner Co. and Commonwealth of TN ........... Note: This deed and attached court records is quite lengthy but sorts the family out quite nicely. Martin Cline was only in Lincoln Co. a short few years before moving to TN. Perhaps Christopher and Catherine's descendants will help Robert with any NC questions he might have. He has a "Round Robin list " going of researchers interested in this line of Clines". Just my good deed for the day! Enjoy! Lorena

Does anyone on this list know any living Lincoln/Catawba Starr descendants? I'm making significant headway on the Starr research and have now accounted for all of Jacob's male children, Jonathan, Jacob, John, and Philip, but not for his 2nd wife or the female children. I was hoping to find some living descendants who might have old records tucked away somewhere. The Starr family is very much under-represented in Catawba genealogies and I'd like get some living descendants involved. The Starrs are related to the Hewitts, Lutz, Rudisill (maybe), and Lau/Low's and Weitzel/Whitsell of Guilford Co. Anita

A new book is available on the history of Brookford. Told from the working man's point of view, this book is very interesting. It has over 277 pages and is about 8-1/2 x 11 inches. Many pictures and many interesting articles. I have bought one and consider it a treasure. E-mail me for more info. Charles Lail Catawba County
