    3. Help Please..... James Allen Arndt, a great-grandson of the Lutheran Pioneer Pastor in N.C., the Rev. John Gottfried Arends, was born April 29, 1871, at Newton, N.C. According to my Mother's Baptismal Certificate She was baptized by Rev. James Allen Arndt pastor of Bethel Lutheran Church, Iron Station, N.C. She was baptized at the home of her parents in 1899. I have not been able to find an exact location for the Bethel Congregation in Iron Station. The only possibility I have is the present Presbyterian Church Building which is still in use in Iron Station. When I was in the fifth grade in school we lived in Iron Station for about one year and attended church at the Presbyterian Church since at that time there was no Lutheran Congregation in the village of Iron Station. I know there were other families there who had also been brought up by Lutheran Families. My Mother attended the Stroup School House which was located southeast of Iron Station. She and her brothers and sisters walked about three miles to school every day. My Mother was the youngest child in the Plonk Family. My Grandmother Plonk along with her husband Jacob Cswell Plonk was given the Hovis Farm in order to take care of her mother. Since Mary Blanche Hovis was the only child of the third wife of her Father, All the other Children were very upset with the decision. Just in case you have information about any of the early churches located in this area of North Carolina I would be happy to see a copy of the information or know where I can find it in a publication. Any assistance would be greately appreciated. Pat C. Cloninger patcazc@abts.net

    3. Mimi There is a listing for George and his wife on page 87 Clines Twp, Catawba Co., NC in 1910 that shows them as having been married for 13 years, this is a first marriage for each of them and Sylvania has had no children, George is 54 and Sylvania is now 49. Living in the household is Cora Goodnight who is 13 years old and is their ward. Somewhere there should be guardianship papers assigning her to them and disclosing her parents. Be my guess Sylvania never had any children and never will. Living next door to this couple is another Turner family, David L. Turner age 23 married 4 years wife Mary L age 26 who has had 3 children one still alive and a daughter Eva E. age 1 yr 11 months. He could be a relative but probably not a child of George. Should not be too hard to go back and find that relationship, if you want me to. Agnes C. 3. Mimi, the expert on Caldwell County is Linda Staley in Pattterson (near Lenoir) Most of the books on Caldwell County were compiled by Linda McGalliard Staley, Patterson, North Carolina. She is Mrs. Allen Staley. 828-758-8373. You could call her, and Linda can give you her e-mail address. She should be able to tell you who works the Lovelady Township in Caldwell County. Someone on Catawba-West-L may have her e-mail address. I hope you are going to put your work on the Rincks in our new volume of The Catawba County Heritage Book. You may know of this already. If not, send me your address and I will mail you the information. I think there should be a special place in heaven for people who work on Millers! Hope this helps, Anne. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary Harbinson" <m.harbinson@worldnet.att.net> To: <CATAWBA-WEST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 04, 2004 4:50 PM Subject: [CATAWBA-WEST] Thomas Miller/ Elvira unknown Settlemire > Searching for the family of Thomas Miller who married Elvira Settlemire/Settlemoir in Caldwell Co. 1. 10 Most Historic Events in Catawba County
    2. Derick Hartshorn
    3. Hi folks, I have been asked to help supply a list of "The 10 Most Historic Events in Catawba County in the Past 125 year." (since 1879) I need your help to help put this together. I think this project deserves some serious attention. This post is directed to folks who know and care for our Catawba Vally heritage and who might contribute to this effort. Should you have access to microfilm, the "Newspapers in Catawba County" http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/Newspapers.htm you might choose to contribute. The Newton Library has most of the central Catawba County newspaper micro film. The Patrick Beaver Library generally has most of the Hickory papers. While there is some double coverage, they pretty well cover the county. Please be willing to help transcribe some of these old newspapers. They hold the memories of our Catawba Valley ancestors. Let me suggest a few events: · The Miracle of Hickory (Great Polio Epidemic of 1944) · NC Governer Clyde Hoey Visits Conover (1940) · Hickory’s First Airplane Flight (1912) · Sunday School Murder (1908) · The Great Flood (1916) · Lenoir-Ryne College forerunner founded (1890) · Concordia College destroyed by fire, death of Dr. Fred T. Foard (1933) Please add to this list, as many events you can think of. --Derick

    3. Hickory Public Library, 375 Third St. NE Hickory, NC 28601. Telephone: 828-304-0500, ext 234 (North Carolina Room) We will host a workshop presented by Mr. Tim Rackley titled "Finding a Needle in the Haystack" The "Haystack" is really the US Federal Census before 1850. The "Needle" is really their parents. As all of us know, by now, the census before 1850 listed only the Head of the Household by name, slotting the others by gender and age. Tim has a method of narrowing a list of possible parents down to a probable parent. Join us! No fee and no registration is necessary. First come first served. Hope to see all of you there. 3. No, these are not the Yoders of Catawba County, NC, The family of Conrad Yoder are tied to the Yoders of Oley Township, Berks County, PA, The direct ancestors of Conrad Yoder are believed to be from Steffisburg, Switzerland. Conrad was not born there, but his father or grandfather is believed to have come from Steffisburg, Canton Bern, Switzerland. There is an article in our last Catawba Cousins about people on the ship with Conrad Yoder that may be of interest to you. Conrad made a number of trips from what would become Catawba County to family in Oley Township, Berks County, PA. Heinrich Whitener, Michael Whitener, and Daniel Warlick also came from Oley Township Anne ----- Original Message ----- From: <AngelfetGM@aol.com> To: <CATAWBA-WEST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 30, 2004 7:54 PM Subject: [CATAWBA-WEST] Yoder > Folks, > I just picked up a book today and was skimming through it.
