    2. Hi List, I've been asked to explain why I was looking for these people. I just got this info. from my sister. Back in 1962 when her first daughter was born and before our grandmother Lockie Lee YOUNT-BROWN b. 1884, died in Aug. 1962. She talked to Grandma and asked her about her parents so she could write it in her new daughters baby book. She forgot all about it till she was cleaning out her closet and found the baby book. She said that my Grandfather had a brother named Cube BROWN and his wife was Susan BROWN. My Grandfather was born abt 1879/80 in what we think was Alexander Co. NC. And Grandma told her that she was half raised and lived with till she got married with a John BRINKLEY and wife Laura HARRIS-BRINKLEY. She got married sometime between 1900 and 1906 in Catawba Co. or Lincoln Co.NC I live in Northern Minnesota and can't go and do the lookups so I was hoping someone may have these people in their lines or files. Thank You, Jean Jondreau

Malinda, I found the church on the USGS Geographic Names Information Server at http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html If you type in the search boxes from that page: Feature Name: Flat Rock State: North Carolina Feature Type: church you will get a list of 8 "Flat Rock Church"es, one of which is Flat Rock Baptist Church in Surry Co. If you click on its link, you will be supplied with an information summary and.....here's the good part....links to online maps which will, with a little work, show you the exact location in Surry Co. of the church. You can get an interactive aerial view of the location from the Microsoft TerraServer, or you can get USGS maps of the area which, if you zoom in to the 4m scale (click on the plus sign, let it come in, and click on it again), whill show you the location and the surrounding terrain on a topographic map. There are also maps from the census bureau which will show you the location. Can you tell that I've been playing today? <grin> Have fun! Peace, Part of the Tree, Greg

    2. Rosemary Moore
    3. Hi Lynn, These are current maps. I asked them if the published date was available, haven't heard back yet. I noticed from one map area that included my g-g grandfather Alexander Moore's property in Cat Co. ( now owned by my brother, and on the national historic register), that it included the old road (plowed under) not used since 1960, to the improvements ( a newer building) constructed in the1980's, to new roads used presently. It did not include the family cemetery though, (but does those cemeteries attached to churches). So in some cases it covers a span of time. The thing that is good about these maps is you can search by a place name or item name such as Little Mountain, or Terrapin Creek, or even church name, then you can zero in on the exact location by state, etc,. I queried Olivet Church and it listed many churches all over the U.S., I chose Cat Co.NC. & was taken to the location of the church & cemetery where most of my Saunders ancestors are buried, it gave me a sense of the surrounding areas and neighborhood, (things I am already familiar with) it is a good secondary source to lead to those elusive primary sources we are always searching for. And the fact that they are topographical is helpful. They can be downloaded, maybe into Paint or Works, where you can locate and mark other places, lines & boundaries not noted on the map, so eventually you can compile a complete picture of a property. It's so much easier than waiting for a map ordered from a location some distance away. You have the option of ordering maps from there also. 3. I could not believe the speed they responded to my query. I'll pass along to you. R Moore Rosemary - We're working on getting a key to all those map symbols up on our Web site. In the meantime, the USGS has one on their mapping site - you can find by starting at http://mapping.usgs.gov and looking around. Purple areas are "disturbed" areas that have been modified in some way since the map was printed - but the map hasn't been updated to reflect those changes in detail. - Ed Ed McNierney [email protected] http://www.topozone.com

If you can't travel, it's the next best thing. I couldn't find the schedule to interpret certain items and have asked them, if anyone visiting this site can find the schedule let me know where. And I would like to know when the maps were published. Rosemary
