    2. Johann Theobold Hunsucker No. 353 p. 237 Second Installment Mary, wife of John Grunt was given Lot No. 1 consisting of 73 acres and valued at $300.00, land lying on the south bank of a fork of Lyle's Creek, abbuting on the land of Philip Baker and lot #2. It included the old barn and improvements on John Grunt so probably abbuted land upon which they were living. Joseph inherited Lot No. 2 and his acres were valued at $531.00. His land included the parent's old home and outbuildings. Lot No. 5 was Jacob's with 108 acres valued at $320.00. They abbuted lots #2 and corners of #10, #4, and #5 and included his own house and the Still house and Spring house. Molly, wife of Adam Grunt received Lot No. 4 with 63 acres valued at $250.00. Her lots shared corners with #3 and #5 and the line with #9 and #10. Catherine, wife of Peter Little, Jr. inherited 79 acres worth $230.00. The land shared corners with lots #2 and #3, following a line of lot #4 to the corner of #6 and Aker's line. Sarah, wife of Simon Haas had Lot No. 6 on the waters of Lyle's Creek. Her 57 acres were valued at $300.00. They bordered lots #7, #5 and #9. The oldest son Wilhelm was given Lot No. 7 with 65 acres on Lyle's Creek, next to Sarah's worth $320.00. His neighbor on the other side was Christian on Lot No. 8, with 73 acres worth $400.00. This land was the site of Christian's dwelling house and buildings. Lot No. 9 was John's with 48 plus acres on the waters of Lyle's Creek valued at $193.00 abutting the corners of #4, #5, and #8 and cornering with #6 and #7. Susannah, wife of William Drum was given Lot No. 10 consisting of 88 acres with $250.00 on the waters of Lyle's Creek along Isenhour's line and cornering with lots #11 and #3, including Adam Grunt's meadow. Elizabeth had passed away before her father so her share was left to her heirs. There were 125 acres on the waters of Lyle's Creek cornering with lots #10, #12, and #13. Peggy, wife of Joseph Isenhour inherited 110 acres at $220.00 along the Oxford Road, bordering Isenhour land and containing their dwelling house and outbuildings. Lot No 13 went to the heirs of Eve, first wife of Jacob Little. There were 115 acres on the waters of Lyle's Creek sharing Grunt's border and a corner touching those of # 11 and #12. The last lot, No 4, went to the heirs of Barbara, the first wife of John Moser. Barbara had died the year after her father in 1823 but before the estate was settle. She received 172 acres on Little Long Shoal Creek valued at $258.00 abutting the land of Philip Baker and including Powder Spring. The commissioners appointed by the court to divide the land were john Willfong, Mich Cline, Jacob Shuford and Maxwell Wilson. 1281 acres valued at $4052 were divided. The chain carriers who did the measuring were Philip Baker and William Aker assisting J. Dellinger. We have a deed showing that Chaterina Little sold her 79 acres to her brother Jacob in 1824. Neighbors Frederick Hoke and Eliza Hoke were witnesses to this transaction. It is interesting to note that the clerk who copied the deeds for the family members spelled Devault's name Huntsicker, Huntsucker, Hunsicker and Hunsucker on the various deeds with Hunsicker being the most used. We have the names of over 1200 direct descendants in the first several generations of Devault's family and by today there must be thousands. Sources: Jonas Hunsucker and Thomas L. Ben Gantt suggested that I send the exact information that I wanted about Isaac Miller to the Gantt-L and NCroots-L list asking for the information I wanted to know. I did, with little results. Maybe because I am a male and my name is Miller. Thinking over the information you have been giving on the Hunsucker family, a different approach could be better. Could I get you to make a request on the West of the Catawba Mailing list? Your name is known and you are kin to the Gantts. The Hunsucker name would be a good lead in. Something like. I want to find out who Isaac Miller was and maybe his parents. Then I could move on to the Thomassons and start my mother's side which would be Barnes and Thrailkills. 1. Re: [Catawba-West] Conrad or Abram MULL dec. 1759?
    2. Dear Gene, This is most interesting, and certainly casts doubt on there being an Abram Mull, son of Christophel. However, there is a problem with dates. Conrad Mull's will was dated Nov 1760, and probated 2 Jan 1761 in Rowan County, NC. I have not seen the actual will, so can not vouch for the accuracy of the date. Is it possible that he made the will earlier knowing about the impending Indian attack, and it didn't get filed until Nov 1860 (understandable due to all the turmoil after the attack) at which point some clerk added the date? He names "present wife Molliana" inferring there was an earlier wife. Conrad Mull married (1) Barbara Barbara Hill in PA. The tradition, of course, is that after the death of Abram (Conrad?) Mull, his widow married George Wilfong, and that her maiden name was Poffh (does anyone have proof of her maiden name?). George Wilfong's wife was Maria Magdalena. Molliana is probably just a contraction of Maria Magdalena. (Other popular contractions were Marillis for Maria Elisabetha, and Analisa for Anna Elisabetha.) 1. [Catawba-West] Johann Theobold Hunsucker No. 3
    2. This is taken from The Catawba Co. Heritage Book. No. 353 p. 237 J. Theobold Hunsucker (1744-1822), called Devault by his German speaking family and neighbors, was born in Rauweiller, formerly of Alsace-Loraine but now part of the Department of Bas-Rhin, France. He arrived in the American Colonies 15 September 1748 aboard the *Two Brothers* ship with his parents, Johannes Hunsinger (1728-1800_ and Maria Bierson. Johannes settled in the predominately German Reformed community of Heidelberg Township in Northampton County (now Lehigh), Pennsylvania, soon acquiring lands on three sides of the Heidelberg church which he helped to build. In the father's will probated 17 December 1800 Johann is named as the oldest son, Dewalt *who had gone to Carolina.* Family legend tells us that he had gone to North Carolina in 1773, settling on a land grant on Lyle's Creek near present day Conover. His oldest son Wilhelm had been born in Pennsylvania in 1771 to him and his wife Susanna Madalena Neff. The family became members of St. John's Lutheran Church as they built their home and prepared the land for crops the family continued to grow. Devault fathered fifteen children: Wilhelm (1710-1851) married Margaret Whittenburg; May married John Grunt; Christian (1773-1878) married Catherine Whittenberg; Susanna (1775-1857) married William Drum; Jacob married Sally Elizabeth Killian; Sarah (1779-1859) married first John Radar and second Simon Haas: Mollie (1780-1843) married Adam Grunt; Chaterina (1781 - ) married first Peter Little, Jr. and second Absolom Goble; Joseph (1783-1874) married Polly Yount; John married first one of the Smith girls and second Polly Sigmon; Eve (1787-1818) was the first wife of Jacob Little,Sr., Theobold died at 18 unmarried; Mary Margaret (Peggy) (1791-1876) married Joseph Isenhour; Elizabeth married Fred Bollinger and Barbara the youngest (1795-1823) was the first wife of John Moser, Sr., moved to Tennessee. There had been confusion in recent generations about the maiden name of Devault's wife Susan Madalene. In the 1928 booklet put out by Jonas Hunsucker and Thomas Hunsucker it was given to Susan Magdalene Ardney and so it has been recorded by many family genealogist since that time. However, Georgia Rowe Arlowe, a descendant of Mary Margaret (Peggy) and Joseph Isenhour acquired a baptismal certificate, called a TAUFSCHEIN in the German in which it is written, drawn for Peggy at the time of her baptism. In it her father is named as Johann Theobold Hunsicker and her mother as Susanna Madalene, "iene geborne Neflin." This translates into English as "born a Neff" with IN at the end of the name being the feminine ending of the surname. So we are listing Johann's wife as Susanna Madalene Neff not Ardney. In this will Devault stipulated that his land should be divided equally among his heirs and we have copies of deed which were provided for each parcel. Although the divisions were relatively equal they were not all the same and the value put on the land by the commissioners was not equal: JOY continued

    1. [Catawba-West] Aubern C. Hunsucker History
    2. This is another family history from The Catawba Co. Heritage Book. No. 352 p. 237. Located in Catawba County in North Carolina there is a large branch of a family known as Hunsucker. In Germany the name is sometimes spelled *Huntsecker* but generally Hunzinger.* The family name appeared for the first time in the records of the American Immigrants. There is a book entitled *Rupp's Collection of 30,000 names of Immigrants to America*, ed. by I. G. Kohler, 202 N. F. St., Philadelphia, Penn. This gives us the record to 1800. *Johannes Huntzecker landed Sept. 15, 1748 on the ship *Two Brothers*, Martin Hunsicker landed Sept. 11, 1731 on ship *Penn Merchant*, Thomas & Daniel Hunsicker landed Oct. 1, 1754. Abraham and Peter Huntzicker landed Oct. 28, 1738. Johannes & Simon Hunsecker landed Oct. 24, 1734. Jacob Huntzecker landed Sept. 28, 1733.* It is evident that this Johannes Hunzinger who landed in 1748 is the father of Johann Theobold, who cam to NC in 1733. Johann Theobold settled in what is now known as Catawba County on the waters of Lyles Creek, remaining there until his death in the year of 1822. The wife of Johann Theobold was Susanna Magdalena. They were blessed with fifteen children: Wilhelm b. Sept 10, 1771; Mary (-m- John Grunt); Joseph (-m- Polly Yunt); Mollie (-m- Adam Grunt); Jacob (-m- Eliza Killian); Catherine (-m- Peter Little); Sarah (-m- Rader); Christian (-m- Catherine Whittenburg); John (-m- Smith); Susannah (-m- William Drum); Elizabeth (-m- Fred Bollinger); Peggy (-m- Joe Isenhauer); Eva (-m- Jacob Little); Barbara (-m- John Moser); and Theobold who died at the age eighteen. Christian, the eight child of Theobold and Susanna, married Catherine Whittenberg and their children were: Elizabeth (-m- William Herman); Sarah (-m- George Huffman); Catherine (-m- William Turner); Emma (-m- Cain Leonard); Anne (-m- Daniel Miller); Paul (-m- Sallie Smyre); Jonas (-m- Sarah C. Clonninger); Melinda and Jacob. Jonas, the seventh child of Christian and Catherine Whitenberg, was a soldier in the Civil War and died at Point Lookout, Aug. 20, 1864. Jonas married Sarah C. Cloninger and at the time of his death the children were very young. Their children were: Alice Manerva b. Nov. 20, 1860 (-m- Walter J. Yount) and Thomas L. b. Aug. 20, 1862 (-m- Amanda F. Carpenter b. May 31, 1867). Thomas L. and Amanda F. Carpenter Hunsucker had the following children: Claudia Ella b. Apr. 8, 1885 (-m- John S. Simmons); Evans Cleveland b. Oct. 6, 1887; Bertie Alice b. Nov. 14, 1892 (-m- Aubra Rockett); Maude Essie b. Aug 25, 1895 (-m- Marvin Propst); Elsie Lee b. Jan 15, 1898 (-m- Chester Lowe); Eula Vergia B. Mar. 29, 1901 (-m- Olin Rockett); Ernest Durant b. Sept. 28, 1903: Catrina May b. Dec. 1, 1905 (-m- Paul Sigmon); and Aubern Carpenter b. Feb 9, 1909. Aubern C. Hunsucker, the youngest child of Thomas and Amanda Carpenter Hunsucker, married July 12, 1938 Mary Virginia Anthony b. May 27, 1914. They have one daughter, Mary Virginia born April 22, 1943. She married Robert Talley Roakes on June 28, 1964. Robert was born Dec. 16, 1940. They have the following children: Amy Elizabeth born Nov. 26, 1968 and Robert Talley Roakes, Jr. born June 15, 1971. 1. [Catawba-West] Hunsucker
    2. Adrian, I have 3 stories on the Hunsucker family by 3 different people. They have been taken from the Catawba Heritage Book from ages ago. This is the first one: Hunsucker No. 351 p. 236-237 Johannes Hunzinger was a native of Schallbach which is a part of the German Duchy of Nassau. This area is now a part of France that lies just south of the Rhineland -- Palatinate of Germany. When I visited this area in 1981, everyone I encountered spoke German and all the tombstones in the cemetery had German names. Johannes Hunzinger married Maria Pierson on April 30, 1743. Their first son, Johan Theobold, was baptized in the Evangelical Reformed Church in the nearby village of Rauweiller on January 24, 1744. On May 27, 1748, the pastor of the church, John Henry Wayner, furnished a Taufschein (Baptism Certificate) to the parents. Johannes Hunzinger and his family left Germany and arrived at Philadelphia on the ship *Two Brothers* on September 15, 1748. They settled in what is now Heidelberg Township, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. In Pennsylvania the name is spelled Hunsicker. Johannes Hunsicker was already buying land by 1750 and 1753 he signed a petition for a public road for nearby Allentown to the Heidelberg area. In 1757, a second church was built in Heidelberg to replace the original one destroyed by a fire. Johannes Hunsicker is listed as being one of those who furnished money to build the new church which was to be a "union" church (one used by the reformed and Lutheran congregations). In 1762, Johannes Hunsicker was listed as tax collector for this area. Johannes Hunsicker and Maria Pierson are believed to have had two sons: Johan Theobold and Jacob. It is not known if Maria came to America or whether she died early in Pennsylvania s Johannes Hunsicker's wife's name at birth of the third child is Magdalena. Johannes and Magdalena Hunsicker are known to have had seven children: Johannes, Magdalena, Casper, Anna Maria, Joseph, Heinrich and Peter. All the boys in the family served in the Revolutionary War except Johan Theobold, who had moved to North Carolina prior to the war, and Peter, was too young. That Johannes Hunsicker had a long life and was a large land owner (1200 acres) can be seen in his will which was dated November 3, 1780 and was probated December 17, 1800 (Lehigh County Will Book 4, page 38). In his will his sons Jacob and Casper were made trustees for his son Dewalt (Johann Theobold) *who had gone to Carolina.* The will stipulated that if Johan Theobold did not return within fifteen years after his *Erbschaft* was due, he would not receive anything. Johan Theobold Hunsucker (local spelling) was confirmed at Heidelberg Church on April 2, 1758. There is some question as to the family name of his wife, Susannah Magdelena. The history written in 1928 by Jonas and Thomas L. Hunsucker says that her name as Ardney one place and Nafer in another place. Mr. Raymond E. Hollenbach, a noted genealogist and descendant of Johannes Hunsicker, states that the family was most probably Arner, Neff or Neifer since these families were in this area. They were married in Pennsylvania since their oldest child, Wilhelm was born September 10, 1771 in Lynn Township. Johan Theobold Hunsucker and his family came to present day Catawba County area about the year 1773 and settled on the waters so Lyles Creek. The house was build is still standing and is the present residence of the George E. LaFone family. Johan Theobold and his wife are buried at St. John's Lutheran Church not far from where they settled. Their children were: Wilhelm md. Margaret Whittenburg; Mary md. John Grunt; Joseph md. Polly Young; Mollie md. Adam Grunt; Jacob md. Eliza Killian; Catherine md. 1) Peter Little 2) Gobel; Sarah md. 1) John Rader 2) Simon Haas; Christian md. 2. This article was taken from *NC Rebuilding an Ancient Commonwealth 1584-1925, Vol. VIV, p. 418-419. CHARLES LAMAR HUNSUCKER, M. D., who is engaged in the active general practice of his profession at Hickory, Catawba County, was born in Conover, this county, November 17, 1890, and is the son of Wilburn J. and Alice (Dellinger) Hunsucker, who now reside in Conover, the father being a retired brick contractor. Both the Hunsucker and Dellinger families were founded in Catawba County in the pioneer days and both were representatives of staunch German pioneers in the state of Pennsylvania. Lawson A. 1. [Catawba-West] Conrad or Abram MULL dec. 1759?
    2. Gene Rooks
    3. I know Anne and others have already speculated that it was Conrad MULL, rather than an unprovable Abram MULL, who died in the Indian attack in 1759. A few months ago I was browsing on some old items available for a while on-line from The Pennsylvania Gazette. I found this: Item #23376, June 28, 1759, filed from Charles Town in South Carolina, May 12. "According to Letters received yesterday from Gentlemen of Repute in Rowan County, in North Carolina, upon the North Borders of this Province, dated the 28th of April, and 1st, 3d, and 5th Insant, many horrid Murders have lately been committed by Indians, on the Yadkin and Catawba Rivers. The Number of People killed, in some Letters, are said to be 13 or 14, in others 17 or 18; and the Murderers are supposed to be Cherokees, tho they may as well be Shawanese, or of those Indians who were prevailed on to quit the Ohio with the French Garrison of Fort Duquesne. Among the Killed are named John SNAP, Thomas ELLIS, Thomas ADAMS, Daniel HOLSEY, and Joseph RENTFORD, in the upper Branch of the Yadkin; John HANNAH, and his Family (supposed to be 7 in Number) near Fort Dobbs, and Conrad MULL, on the Catawba River. The Catawba Nation was greatly exasperated on this Occasion, as soon as they heard of the Murders, sent out 30 of their best Warriors, under Capt. Matthew Tool, in Pursuit of the Enemy. In the mean time all the Frontier Inhabitants are very much alarmed, many of them have desisted Planting, and others are fortifying themselves..........By some Accounts received since our last, there is hardly any Room to doubt, that they were Lower Cherokees who committed the late horrid Murders in Rowan County, North Carolina........May 30. We hear proper Measures have been taken by the Administration here, for obtaining effectual Satisfaction forthe outrageous Breach of Treaty, and impudent and barbarous Insult committed by those Cherokees, in murdering and scalping the Rowan Settlers."

    1. [Catawba-West] Burke Co. NCGenWeb page-revamp, new search engine
    2. Derick S. Hartshorn
    3. Dear Folks, I have done some major work on the Burke Co. NCGenWeb page < http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncburke/ > I have changed the access routine which WILL affect your bookmarks. Previously, the URL address was: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncburke/ncburke.htm It will no longer be necessary to use the page name to access the site. Due to the routines of various routers, the index page (which appears after the last "slash") is really superfluous if it is the name the server is looking for. RootsWeb looks for "index.htm" which is the actual default page. So, you can either use: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncburke/ or http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncburke/index.htm If you have tried in the past to use the search engine on the Burke Co. page, you probably experienced some disappointment. I have added a new search engine that indexes the entire site, including some 4 year-old queries that were not previously accessible. To use the SEARCH ENGINE, go to the initial Burke Co. page and click on "Search ENTIRE Burke County NCGenWeb" (the first entry on the page). This will bring you to the SEARCH page. Use a key word or phrase and the results will be displayed in a matter of seconds. Please let me know if you have any problems. --Derick *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* For more Burke County, NC help, queries, resources and lookups, visit the US GenWeb Burke County page at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncburke/ncburke.htm Subscribe to Burke County mail list - send e-mail to: [email protected] - put "subscribe" in the text. 1. [Catawba-West] VAN HORN Family - Three Generations
    2. Gene Rooks
    3. I would love to hear from anyone descended from or researching this family. Gene in Gotha VAN HORN Family of Burke Co., Three Generations Researched by Gene Ballentine Rooks [email protected] First Generation 1. Isaac1 VAN HORN, son of Isaac Barentsen VAN HORN and Elsje SLEGHT was born in Bucks Co., PA 20 JAN 1749. Isaac died 1819 in Burke Co., NC, at 70 years of age. He married twice. He married Alice NEVIUS in Bucks Co., PA, 16 DEC 1772. Their marriage license, recorded in Pennsylvania Vital Records, Vol. II, p. 235 & 238, states Isaac of Solebury Twp., carpenter, and Alice Neafus of same. Surety, Joseph Van Horn, of Middletown twp., blacksmith. This is the latest mention of this couple in Bucks Co. records that I have been able to find, no baptisms at the church, etc. I believe they moved to Rowan/Lincoln Co., NC, not long after their marriage. Alice was born in Bucks Co., PA, EST 1752. Alice was the daughter of Cornelius NEVIUS and Sarah SLEGHT. Alice died EST 1790. He married Maria Christina ASCHENBRENNER in Lincoln Co., NC, 7 APR 1797. Christina was born in York Co., PA 27 AUG 1743. She was baptized Sept. 18, 1743 at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, York Co., PA. Christina was the daughter of Urban ASCHENBRENNER and Anna Maria BALDY The VAN HORN line in North Carolina is proven from Isaac in Burke Co. on down. The lineage I have on the Isaac from Bucks Co. PA on back to New Amsterdam is also very well documented. I must point out that I have not 'proven' that Isaac of Burke Co. is the same Isaac from Bucks Co. PA, although I am convinced he is. In addition to my findings, I secured the fine services of Betsy Pittman, of Burke Co., NC, who scoured all available records of the Van Horn family in North Carolina. From facts she provided me and deductions I have made, I have pieced out a family for Isaac in North Carolina, son John's family is well proven. It is important to note that this is the only family of that surname in this part of North Carolina for well into the 19th century. I have the Pennsylvania/New Amsterdam pedigree of Isaac Van Horn upon request. We don't know what prompted Isaac to move to North Carolina, possibly the area in Bucks Co. was filling up, and land was plentiful and cheap down south, and he did not inherit land. During the Revolution, he served as a Lt. under Col. Charles McDowell. This is mentioned in The Annals of Lincoln County by Sherrill, where it is misprinted Vanhom, and confirmed in The State Records of North Carolina, Vol. XXII by Clark, page 158. In 1779, the signature of Isaac Van Horn appears with many others, including neighbors John Borland, John Sigman, Henry Witner, Daniel Whitner, and Philip Whitener, to petition for the portion of Burke Co. they lived in be to be annexed to Lincoln County. The following information is from the Heritage of Burke County,, Article 689. Isaac Van Horn was given a land grant for 350 acres in Burke Co. in 1780, on Peter Mull's Mill Creek. He sold some of this land in 1795 and 1797. He is the only Van Horn in NC in the 1790 census for Lincoln Co., Third Co., Morgan Dist., where he is shown with one adult male, himself, 4 boys at home, and 4 females at home. His first wife may have died soon after, as Isaac married again in 1797 to Christina Aschenbrenner Stamey Borland who had been twice widowed. She is an ancestor also on the Stamey line. Oddly, the 1800 census for Burke Co., NC, page 801, shows an Isaac Van Horn in a household with only one male over 45, himself, and two females, one 10-16, and 1 16-26. Christena appears separately in Lincoln Co., with no men in the household, herself and one female 10-16, one 16-26. I have heard that she separated from him not long after their marriage. However, they still signed as husband and wife for sale of a lot in 1804 in Lincolnton. In 1808, Isaac bought 320 acres along Camp Creek, bounded by Thomas Smith and Hildebrand. John Van Horn witnessed it, and shortly after Isaac deeded 150 acores of it to him. In the 1810 census, an Isaac and John both appear in the Burke Co. census. Only the name of one son, John, is proven. A daughter Sary, (named for her grandmother?) appears in Marriage Bonds of Tryon & Lincoln Co., where an Isaac Van Horn is bondsman for Sary Van Horn in 1809 who married John Jackson. There appears to be another son, Benjamin, as that name appeared on an 1825 estate sale, and even more revealing are tax records which show Isaac's property reduced by 140 acres, and Benjamin appearing next door with 140 acres in 1814. (During all this time only one other Van Horn family appears in all of NC, that of an Abraham in Tyrrell Co., who shows up in 1810, followed by sons named John & Oliver in later censuses. He is most likely a distant cousin of Isaac's, as the name Abraham appeared often in Bucks Co. Van Horn families.) Isaac VAN HORN and Alice NEVIUS had the following children: 2 i. Nathan VAN HORN. This is a speculative entry. There is a record of a Nathan Van Horn among the pioneers from Lincoln/Burke Co. who relocated in Cape Girardeau Co., Missouri, shortly after 1800. Isaac did have four males in his home in 1790, this could be one of them. 3 ii. Nancy VAN HORN. She is mentioned in her brother John's will, to be cared for until her death. She had lived with John for many years. 4 iii. Sarah VAN HORN. Sary married John JACKSON in Lincoln Co., NC, 18 MAY 1809. Isaac Vanhorn is the bondsman for her marriage to John Jackson. 5 iv. Isaac VAN HORN. Nothing is known of him except he appears in the 1800 Burke Co. census bracket 26-45, he may be Isaac's first born. He has one son under 10, female under 10, one 10-15, one 16-26, and two 26-45. It would appear another woman besides his wife is in the home, and certainly the female 16-26 is not likely his daughter, maybe a sister-in-law and mother-in-law. He is shown as Isaac Winhorn, a common misspelling. + 6 v. John VAN HORN was born 21 FEB 1774. + 7 vi. Benjamin VAN HORN was born EST 1780. Second Generation 6. John2 VAN HORN (Isaac1) was born in Rowan Co., NC 21 FEB 1774. His birth date is recorded on his tombstone at Wilkie's Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Burke Co., NC. It is also possible he was born in PA before the family came to NC. John died 15 JAN 1848 in Burke Co., NC, at 73 years of age. John and his wife Sarah are buried at Wilkies Grove Church Cemetery, just east of their land on Camp Creek. He married Sarah WINKLER in 1797. Sarah was born in Rowan Co., NC 16 FEB 1775. Her birth and death dates are from her tombstone at Wilkie's Grove. Sarah was probably the daughter of Thomas WINKLER and Anna Mary ????, or his brother CONRAD WINKLER. This is not proven. Sarah died 11 DEC 1851 in Burke Co., NC, at 76 years of age. John Van Horn had two large farms in Burke Co., one at Van Horn Ford on the Henry Fork River, and one on Camp Creek. His estate filed in 1850 indicated he was a wealthy man, and included 24 slaves. There is an interesting indenture filed in 1843 by a Henry Abee naming John Van Horn and his son-in-law, David Baker, among a list of several people Abee owed money to that he was mortgaging his property to. John and his wife had nine children, Elizabeth, Christina, Isaac, Nancy, Sarah, Ann, Mary, Amey, and Jane, all mentioned in his will dated Jan. 25, 1840. John VAN HORN and Sarah WINKLER had the following children: 8 i. Elizabeth VAN HORN. Betsey died 21 MAY 1839 in Burke Co., NC. She married William BRITTAIN in Burke Co., NC, 3 MAR 1818. She was deceased when her father wrote his will, her children to receive one ninth. Estate settlement records show the children of William Brittain and wife Elizabeth, now dead, were Joshua, Nancy, and Wm. Loranze, Jonas, Sally, and Annie Brittain, still under 21 years of age in July of 1848. 9 ii. Christina VAN HORN. Christina died 1842 in Burke Co., NC. She married Peter MULL. Peter was born 16 JUL 1803. Peter was the son of Henry MULL and Susanna Jane ?. Peter died 7 MAY 1885 in Burke Co., NC, at 81 years of age. She was deceased when her father wrote his will, her children to receive one ninth. In July, 1848, the children of Peter Mull and wife Christena now decd still under 21 were listed as Sarah and Jane Mull. 10 iii. Amy VAN HORN. She married Urban ROCKETT. She is mentioned in her father's will to receive one-ninth. 11 iv. Jane VAN HORN. She married John H. COPELAND. She was mentioned in her father's will to receive one-ninth. + 12 v. Isaac VAN HORN was born 1798. 13 vi. Mary VAN HORN was born in Burke Co., NC 1802. Mary died 1900 at 98 years of age. She married Jacob MULL in Morganton, Burke Co., NC, 1823. Jacob was born 1783. Jacob was the son of Peter MULL and Barbara CLINE. He married Gemima BRITTAIN 1803. Jacob died 19 AUG 1843 in Burke Co., NC, at 60 years of age. She was mentioned in her father's will as Polly Mull to receive one-ninth. After her first husband died, she married Frederich Kaylor. Child by Jacob was Joseph Harrison Mull. + 14 vii. Sarah VAN HORN was born 24 JUL 1804. 15 viii. Anna VAN HORN was born in Burke Co., NC 17 MAY 1812. Anna died 24 AUG 1877 in Vila Rica, Carrol Co., GA, at 65 years of age. She married John HILDEBRAND in Burke Co., NC, 27 JAN 1830. John was born in Burke Co., NC 31 OCT 1798. John was the son of Conrad HILDEBRAND and Elizabeth MULL. John died 9 AUG 1877 in Vila Rica, Carrol Co., GA, at 78 years of age. This information is from The Shoe Cobbler's Kin, Vol. II, p. 840, by Lorena Shell Eaker. She was mentioned in her father's will to receive one-ninth. 16 ix. Nancy VAN HORN was born in Burke Co., NC 11 MAY 1813. Nancy died 7 JUN 1878 in Burke Co., NC, at 65 years of age. She married Alexander DUCKWORTH. Alexander was born 1798. Alexander was the son of John DUCKWORTH and Mary ?. Alexander died 1877 in Burke Co., NC, at 79 years of age. She is mentioned in her father's will to receive one-ninth. 7. Benjamin2 VAN HORN (Isaac1) was born EST 1780. Benjamin VAN HORN had the following child: 17 i. John A. VAN HORN was born 1803. John died BEF 1886. He and his wife Sarah were both deceased by 1886. He married Sarah BURNS. Sarah was the daughter of ? BURNS. Their children were Margaret, Nicholas, Barbara, and Thursey, named in the estate distribution of Philip Burns of Andrew Co., MO in 1886. Third Generation 12. Isaac3 VAN HORN (John2, Isaac1) was born 1798. He married Sarah MULL in Burke Co., NC, 27 FEB 1819. Sarah was born 1796. Her birth year are computed from her age given in the 1850 and 1860 censuses for Burke Co. Sarah was the daughter of Henry MULL and Susanna Jane ?.
