Dear folks, The Catawba County NCGenWeb page has been revised. Many of the links on the left side of the page have been deleted and combined into a new link entitled "ALL RESOURCES" (indicated by the "NEW" icon). All the old queries dating back to 1996 have been included as well as a couple new resources. You are invited to try it out and offer your suggestions, positive or negative. My goal has always been to try and make researching a little easier. If you know of anything new I am not aware of, please give me a heads-up. Thanks, --Derick
At 08:46 PM 4/25/2000 , you wrote: >Derick > >Would you please post to this list the directions for getting to the >CATAWBA-WEST board and archive sites. Thank you. I know this can become confusing with so many resources but here they are. You can extrapolate for any county in the US by changing the state abbreviation and county or list name. [NOTE: some resources use the FIRST SIX characters for the county] These all appear on the Catawba Co. NCGenWeb Page http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/ They will soon appear in an easier to use format on the Burke Co. page. I suggest that readers put this post in an easy-to-retrieve file. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* -*-*-*-*-*-*-* CATAWBA-WEST-L list archives http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=CATAWBA-WEST NCBURKE-L list archives http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=NCBURKE Burke County NC Digital library http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/burke.htm Catawba County NC Digital library http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/catawba.htm Burke County NC Query forum http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Burke Catawba County NC Query forum http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Catawba GenForum Queries & Surnames-Western NC Counties http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/gflinks.htm RootsWeb Catawba County NC Surname Search http://surhelp-bin.rootsweb.com/srchsite.pl?site=NCCATAWB RootsWeb Burke County NC Surname Search http://surhelp-bin.rootsweb.com/srchsite.pl?site=NCBURKE Hope this helps, --Derick
I would like to suggest a book that may be of interest to you. "Trade In Strangers" by Marianne S. Wokeck, is the story of the mass migration to North America from Germany and Ireland (includes many of our Scot-Irish who come to our area). I think you will find this book most interesting and full of information. The book was published by the Pennsylvania State University Press, and may be ordered through amazon.com for around twently one dollars. This book is a well documented source of information. It is not a genealogical book, but I have found it fascinating. It contains information found in Fogleman's "Hopeful Journeys", but disagrees with his findings in a few points. Anne

Hi folks, I am presently moving stuff from the Catawba County Government server. They were put there before there was a USGenWeb in operation for Catawba County. They have been nice enough to house many of these pages since 1996 and I appreciate it. The pages that have been moved are family tree pages. The new URLs are: Descendants of Georg HENKEL (1635-1678) http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/henkel/index.htm Descendants of Johann Jacob HOKE (1695-1766) http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/hoke/index.htm Descendants of Peter IKERD (1729-ca 1784) http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/ikerd/index.htm Descendants of Christian TREFFENSTÄTT (TRAVIS) (ca 1725-1784) http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/travis/index.htm Descendants of Matthew WILSON (1717-ca 1795) http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/wilson/index.htm Descendants of Hans JUNDT (ca 1656-?) http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/yount/index.htm

Anne Sorry if anyone got the wrong subscribe address to the Query page. It's: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Catawba If you desire to subscribe to the Query list of surrounding counties, the last word in the URL is the COUNTY. --Derick
Dear folks, After wading through a ton of mail this morning, many subscribers to CATAWBA-WEST-L have made their feelings known concerning forwarded Query List postings. The majority of the responses have been positive but enough have requested that messages not be forwarded to make me re-think the wisdom of forwarding to the list. As much as I hate unnecessary mail, I can understand why some folks would not want duplicate mail or queries. For that reason, I will no longer forward queries from the GenConnect Query page after 10:00 on 27 April 2000. Those that would like to continue to receive these queries can subscribe by going to the query page: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Catawba and filling in their e-mail address at the bottom of the page. The same holds true for the document postings made to the Bible records, Biographies, Deeds, Obits, Wills and Pensions. http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/CatawbaBibl http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/CatawbaBios http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/CatawbaDeed http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/CatawbaObits http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/CatawbaWill http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/CatawbaPens At the same time, please keep in mind that the above document posting pags are NOT for queries or questions. These are ARCHIVE files that are designed to be informative reather than of a query nature. When unsubscribing to CATAWBA-WEST-L, please note that this will not effect your subscription to the query page or the document pages and that you will need to unsubscribe to those pages separately. Many thanks for your understanding. --Derick *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* For more Catawba County, NC help, queries, resources and lookups, visit the US GenWeb Catawba County page at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/ Subscribe to "West of the Catawba" mail list -- 500+ subscribers! Dear list members and friends, If your mail has increased in the past month or so, it is because I am forwarding all the messages received by the QUERY page. Since most list members don't subscribe I am taking the opportunity to make sure everyone gets informed. If you are already a subscriber to the list, excuse the duplicates. I would like to subscribe everyone to the QUERY postings unless anyone has an objection. If so let me know and I will respect your wishes. Thanks, Derick S. Hartshorn Page owner - Catawba Co. According to The Hoffmans Of North Carolina Revisited the parents of this Huffman are Julius Pickney Huffman b 1858 and Anna Rosabelle Miller b 8/3/1879 died 1953. Both are buried at Millers and St Stephens Lutheran Church Cemetery. (This is a quote from the book I don't know if these cemeteries are one in the same) The book also lists almost everybody as Hoffman's although the names are interchangeable in most cases. The grandparents were according to the same book were; Nelson Cleveland Huffman b 1821 died 1897 and Rhoda M. Bolick b 1828 died 1924 Both buried at Mt Olive Lutheran Church Cemetery, Catawba Co. NC. The great grandparents according to the same book are: Martin Huffman Jr. b 1777 Md. and Tabitha Elizabeth "Betty" Hawn b 1785 Warren Co. NC Both are buried in the Huffman Seabock Cemetery Hickory NC. I have more info. I hope this helps Don Huffman [email protected]
