    1. [Catawba-West] Daniel Cloninger and William Cloninger of 1860 Gaston Co., NC
    2. Reiley Kidd
    3. My ancestor Ephraim Stroup is said to have had a sister Polly (or Mary) with whom he was very close. Polly is said to have married a Cloninger, and to have had a son (grandson? the way these stories get telescoped) named Charles, who was superintendent of a cotton mill in Gaston Co., NC. I looked at the 1850 and 1860 NC census indices, looking for a Cloninger with wife Polly (or Mary), who could have been Ephraim's sister. 1850 NO Cloninger wives named Polly in Gaston Co.; a widow Polly Clonnger in Catawba Co, p. 269, Newton Twp, but she's 66, too old by 15 years. 1860 Daniel Cloninger, Gaston p. 144, wife Mary, age 40 (possible), and William Cloninger, " , p. 144, wife Mary, age 39 (equally possible). Can anyone shed light on these Cloningers? Specifically, did either of them have a son or grandson named Charles, who was in the cotton business? Thanks, Reiley Kidd Seattle

    3. Hi Agnes, I believe the Catawba Co Historical Association has the "Catawbans" for sale at the old court house in Newton, NC. They maintain a museum there and have a small room with items for sale , like books, maps etc. I haven't been there for a couple years, so I am not positive it is still open. they also have it listed on their site: http://www.co.catawba.nc.us/otheragency/cchs/histassn.htm Our libraries around here in NC also have the book. 3. At 09:17 AM 05/23/2000 -0600, you wrote: >Does anyone know where I can purchase the book "the Catawabans" by Gary Freeze? >Agnes Cloninger I received the following advice on locating books from a library listserv: <snip> If you're buying books, you need to be aware of http://www.bookarea.com You can search a book by author or title, specify shipping destination and currency (inluding non-US), and the site will compare between 41 online book retailers, including the three superstores, Books-a-Million, remainder sites such as Book Closeouts and Hamilton Books, Amazon UK, and a number of others you may never have heard of. It then proceeds to list the results, from cheapest to most expensive including the shipping costs (both for ground or air shipping) and notes how quickly they ship and whether the item is in stock or has to be special ordered. (It even factors in the reduced cost if a coupon can be applied to the purchase.) In most cases, the superstores (Amazon, B & N, and Borders) are NOT the cheapest; and while the savings is often only $4-$5 for the same book with the same stock status and comparable shipping, I've had situations where I've saved as much as 50% off the cost of what it would have been at Amazon, and in one case I saved 90% because it was available through one of the remainder sites. I don't buy any book anymore without checking there first! It has also enabled me to find books which are listed as no longer in print at the superstores, and it has a function for comparison pricing for used books as well. 1. [Catawba-West] Can anyone help identify John Slumpoff (SLUMPF)
    2. I have been trying to identify a man named John Slumpoff late 1700's, early 1800's risiding in Lincoln Co., NC. He appears on some of my Reel family deeds and appears to be related, probably by marriage. He signs on two releases to the Legatees of Johan George Reel, dated 3 April 1795 and he signs as a witness on a deed of 3 August 1797 which was a part of the land settlement of the children of Johan George Reel. On the later deed he signs with the sons and son in laws. Johan George Reel left a will, which has mysteriously disappeared from the NC State archives, the only record of it is now found in published abstracts, giving names of some children , and that it was proved April court by Alexander Brevard. On the 1797 deed all the children, or brother in laws can be identified, except who or how this John Slumpoff is related. The identified Children of Johan George Reel and his wife Catharina Schnepp (Snapp) Reel are as follows: George Reel, Jr married Mary Stroup (Lincoln Co., NC) John (Johannes) Reel married Catharine Stuckey (Jefferson Co., KY) (migrated to Knox Co., IN) Jacob Reel married Elizabeth Nafe (Jefferson Co., KY) (migrated to Knox Co., IN) Elizabeth Reel married Michael Pinkley (little known of him, shows up in later Burke Co., NC, then may have migrated to Tennessee) David (Devald) Reel married Elizabeth Unknown (NC, they later migrated to Knox Co., IN) Lewis (Ludwig) Reel married Catherine Drake (Jefferson Co., KY) (migrated to Knox Co., IN) Godfrey (Gottfried) Reel married Catherine Cloninger (Lincoln Co., NC, later migrated to TN and then Knox Co., Indiana) Daniel Reel married Barbara Unknown (NC) (they later migrated to TN, AR., MO., and then into Texas) Catharina Reel married John Samuel Rintleman (Rendleman), Jr (Lincoln Co., NC) Two other possible daughters: Rachel Reel (Rill) married John Ramsey (Lincoln Co., NC) Mary Reel married Joseph Jobe Pendergrass (Orange Co., NC) John Slumpoff has me stumped. I can't find anything about him or a Slumpoff family. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who may be able to shed some light on this individual. Also anyone who may have any further information on the other family members listed. Thanks very much. C. Ernst
