I am working on the family of (Capt.?) James White of Long Creek, present day, a little west of Bessemer City. I follow them back to Oxford Twp., Chester Co., PA (on the paternal side) and West Nottingham Twp. ("New Connought") Cecil Co., MD (on the maternal). A John White, who's will was proved 20 June 1775, made 23 May 1772, names sons James, Thomas and Isaac, among others. Thought to have been brothers by several authors of King's Mountain material, Thomas and Isaac arrived in 1779, after James had already bought land, seven years prior. After the War, Thomas took bounty land in Bond Co., Illinois and died there in 1824. Isaac followed his brother to Bond Co., and in 1821, died at the age of sixty-one years. James stayed behind as did most of his line, in Tryon County (est. 1768--he bought land here in 1772), later (1779) Lincoln, later (1846) Gaston Co., in the Long Creek area. This is the James that was a founder of Long Creek Presbyterian Church, in 1780. He is buried in the Long Creek Church cemetery next to his wife, Sarah Mary Givens, daughter of Robert and Lucy (Hartshorn) Givens. Her mother was born about 1720, probably near Norwich, Conn. She is also buried at the Long Creek Cemetery; died in 1815, at the probably age of 95. This marks one of the very early migrations, southward from New England). Lucy Hartshorn, from a long line of Mass.-Conn. Hartshorns was one of the very first female Hartshorns to live in the Deep South. Her son-in-law, James White, MAY have served at King's Mountain but there is no certainty that he is the same one. A second-generation Irishman, apparently this James was the first sheriff of Lincoln County (1779). My work continues and I am still trying to discern the John White "of Oxford Twp." in his will (proved June 1775) reads, in part: Provides for wife Margaret. To son Saml. 15 pounds. To daughter Janet Love 15 pounds. To son James 6 pounds. To son Edward 16 pounds. To son Thomas 16 pounds. To son Isaac 16 pounds. To daughters Sarah and Rebecca their beds and saddles. Remainder equally divided. Executors: John Ross and Thomas Love Wit: David Fleming, Thomas Armstrong, John Black There were other John Whites in Chester Co., just as there have been several James Whites in the same geographical area in North Carolina. I am still beyond documentation as to the James I seek. He is either not the James mentioned in the will, or the possibility that Thomas and Isaac (of King's Mountain fame) are necessarily the ones mentioned in the will. The White and Givens families (PA) and the Hartshorn family (MD) are documented to have intermarried. Sarah Mary (Givens) White had a brother, Jonathan Thomas, who was the Jonathan who appears on a deposed list of soldiers in Capt.Jacob Collins Company at the surrender of Charleston (12 May 1780), dated 14 Oct 1786. He also appears on a list of militia paroled by Lord Cornwallis. The list includes 534 men that were taken prisoner at the battle of Guilford Court House, 15 March 1781. He was the son of Lucy (Hartshorn) Givens, brother to Sarah Mary. Many folks are interested in this project and a mini-list was created. I think this family deserves a web page but other commitments don't leave me with much time. If you have any thoughts on this, or if a formal list could be established, relating to the WHITE families that migrated from PA/MD to NC. I think a lot more material could get out and maybe the "who's who" mystery can be solved. Please write me at Derick S. 1. [Catawba-West] Cemetery Help Responses.
    2. I have recieved numerous request from listers to post some of the wonderful responses I have received in regards to repairing and restoring grave stones. Please be patient.. I will get these posted to the list on Thursday. I hope this sort of thing spreads like wildfire! But I must caution you.. Please check into your local and state laws regarding Cemetery Restoration. Unfortunetly there are laws that prohibit us from restoring what time and vandilism has taken from us! If you disagree with the laws..please, start now writing your State Representive and Congress to have these changed. Get fellow family members, friends, neighbors, Genealogy Socities, Historical Socieities, and anybody else you can think of to bombard your govenment officals with letters. I am on that bandwagon now. If we do not start now, then the thought of what will happen in the future is not a pretty sight. Fortunetly the cemetery that I am concerned with at the moment does not fall into any kind of assistance from the local or state government or through any affiliation with a Church. PLEASE .. DO NOT LET THE CEMETERY RESTORATION LAWS STOP YOU FROM GOING FORWARD. WE MUST STAND TOGETHER TO BRING ON NEW CHANGES IN THE LAWS TO PRESERVE OUR HERITAGE. 1. [Catawba-West] Cemetery Help
    2. I made a commitment to myself today, and now I need and kind of advice or help to try to see this thing through. While walking through a the cemetery today where we buried my dad a few weeks ago, it saddened me to see how many "old" grave markers were broken and laying in pieces on the ground. Some of these markers are dated back to the early 1800's. I know for a fact that there are no family members left to tend to some of these markers that are fastly ruining. I have spoken to a couple of funeral homes and all they want to do is sell me new markers! Ha! Something I in no way can even began to afford. Does anybody have any idea what I would use to put these markers back together? Or any suggestions on maybe building a frame to set them back up in? There is no problem going into this particular cemetery and doing this maintance work as far as permission from anybody. I have already checked on that. Some of the broken markers are of my ancestors. I also want to do some preventive measures to insure that this sort of breakage is not going to happen to some of the other old markers that are now beginning to lean. I have enlisted help from some other people to raise the markers and pour concrete under them to level them up. I just need suggestions on how to put some of the broken ones back together. Any ideas or suggestions is greatly appreciated. Vicki Buff Quillan Texas

    3. My Great Uncle Sidney Leander Yount married Belle Fox, daughter of Rev. Albert J. Fox. He died in 1899 and was born in 1841. They had seven children: Clara ,Lucy, Zeb,Maude, Mrs. George F. Cochran, Floyd and Grace. This Sidney's parents were Franklin A. Yount and Jamima Cline Yount. So it does indeed sound like there were several Sidney Younts! Susan Carpenter

    1. [Catawba-West] RE: Yount/Little
    2. Hi Lynn, Agnes & List, The info. is said to come from a hardback marriage register. And the source just wrote and said that the parents of Sidney Yount who married Martha Little were Peter Moser and Violet Yount. That I mistook their names to be the witnesses. Sorry for my mistake and my lost of a great grandmother. Just have to keep looking. And there has to be another marriage for my Sidney Yount somewhere, if my Sidney Yount married Laura Bolich in 1888 and he had two children, one Vance in 1883 and Lockey L. 1886. Thanks for all the suggestions, Jean Jondreau

    1. Re: [Catawba-West] Re: yount/little
    2. Jean, Is it possible that Sidney Yount married Martha Little in 1869 and she died before the 1870 census? Also, it may be interesting to see if anyone can find out who this Violet Yount is (witness to the Sidney Yount-Martha Little marriage). Maybe that would be a clue as to whether there are 2 Sidneys. It is interesting to note that a Little is witness to the Sidney Yount-Laura Bolich marriage. Lastly, did the information about the first marriage come from a marriage register? If so, it may be worthwhile seeing if an actual marriage license was obtained (many were by 1869); if so, it would probably list the parents. (I have some from my ancestors around that time and they do.) (May bo on microfilm at the Archives or Catawba Co. Register of Deeds.) By the way, some of this is posted on Ancestry.com's world tree, so someone else is researching this family too. Their email address is listed. Perhaps they have some primary source verification. Good luck! Lynn Wesson Raleigh, NC

    2. Agnes E. Cloninger
    3. The census records for 1860 do not show Sid Yount with a wife, he is still living with his mother Anna who appears to be widowed by this time. There is no evidence in any census that Sidney Yount was married to a Martha and living in Catawba County. The Sidney who was son of John and Anna continued to live with his mother until after the 1880 census was taken. The 1900 census shows Sidney and wife Laura who have been married 20 years, living with their 6 children, Vance, Lockey, Bessie, Flossy, Lester and Rosie. Which child of Sidney Yount is your ancestor, maybe we can find it going from that name. I think that perhaps Sidney who married Martha Little and Sidney who married Laura Bolich are two different people. These Catawba County marriage records were first published a long time ago, sorry you were not aware of that. Agnes Yount are you reading this and can you help? 1. [Catawba-West] Warrior Fork
    2. I would very much appreciate it if someone who is familiar with the Burke Co., NC area could clarify the following. In the early Burke Co., NC land records, there are references to “Warrior Fork of uppermost creek of the three creeks” AND references to “Warrior Fork of Johns River”. According to current maps & gazetteers: “Warrior Fork (Catawba River) is formed in west central Burke County by the junction of Irish and Upper creeks and flows southeast into the Catawba River.” ....... Hence, this would appear to be the Warrior Fork "of uppermost creek of the three creeks". Johns River, lies east of this Warrior Fork and also flows southeast into the Catawba. There does not seem to be any connecting waterway. PUZZLE: Where would land described as on "Warrior Fork of Johns River" be located? Are there (were there) possibly TWO Warrior Forks??? Perhaps one in what is now Caldwell Co.??? My thanks ....... Kay
