Would anyone on the list have information or suggested reading about William Graham's NC Militia, about 1775, and the men who served in the wars with the Cherokee at Montford Cove, Potts Fort? Thanks, Nancy Orr Erb

Agnes, Thanks for the reply. I'm starting to think Anna Best was living with her parents near High Shoals. Her parents were both grandchildren of the immigrants Peiter Heyl (Peter Hoyle) and Bostain Best. Anna's parents left the area in the 1830 and settled in Tennessee. Eli and Anna settled in Cherokee County, NC in 1848. The Mathesons were in Iredell and Burke in the early 1800s. Of course, there still a few around Taylorsville. I've often wondered how Eli met Anna. He was the grandson of Highland Scots and lived near Taylorsville. She was of German stock living near what is today the border between Lincoln and Gaston Counties. Lynn, you can learn all about Marvin T. and Mattie Leatherman by reading A PLACE FOR JOE by Elizabeth Leland---- Down Home Press, PO Box 4126, Asheboro, NC 27204. The book is factual but the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie based on the lives of Joe Hill and Marvin T. & Mattie Leatherman and their daughter Marguerite is not factual to my interpertation. Kurt There is also a marriage bond for Henry Fulenwider to Ann Ramsour dated 7 June 1827 with John D. Hoke as the bondsman. There are also a half dozen others with variations of that surname. There are none by that name nor by the surname "Matheson" in 1850 in either Catawba county or Lincoln county. Where did they go? Agnes Cloninger >From: "J. They obtained their license at the Lincoln Co. Courthouse from Clerk of County Court Vardry McBee. Bondsman for the groom was Henry Fulenwider. In general, couples were married in their neighborhood by a pastor or by the Justice of the Peace for their district. Saturday, 29 Jul 2000, "J. Just for everyone's information, if you are interested in Fulbrights, the Fulbright Family Association is a nationwide group of descendants of the two immigrant Fulbright/Volbrecht men--Johann Wilhelm (William), and Andreas (Andrew) Fulbright. Both men lived in Northampton Co., Penn., before settling in the Lyle's Creek area of present-day Catawba Co. in about 1769. The Association's web site, which contains many articles from past newsletters, membership information, etc. is at: http://www.tfb.com/~edstout/ I also have a lot of information on William Drum, who settled in Cape Girardeau Co., Mo., if this is also of interest. ----Bill Eddleman >Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2000 13:52:21 -0400 >From: "Rhonda Lynn" <[email protected]> > >LINN / LYNN, LINGERFELT, FULBRIGHT, HUDSON, DRUM If anyone has information >on any of these families that settled in Catawba and Lincoln Counties please >reply. Frederick Hoke was living in this area at least by the middle 1810's. He was a prominent land owner and member of society. Sorry I did not read your original message well enough to realize you had already given us the birthdate for your mother.Does her social security application give her birth place, some I have seen show that information. It will take two requests for the 1920 census index to find your people, one for NC and one for VA. I can do that but it will take me a couple of weeks since I have to order them - how about it for anyone who can access the index without ordering it - I am in Idaho and the entire 1920 census itself is here in my local archives but not the index - Can anybody lend a hand and make this a co-op effort? Hi, groups, I thought I remembered someone looking for a burial site of a Jonas Reep sometime recently. Well, while I was looking at gravesites of some of my ancestors this weekend, I ran across this gravestone. The cemetery is Mt. Vernon Baptist in Vale, NC. The stone read "Jonas Reep, 23rd NC Infantry, Co.K, CSA." There are no dates on it. There are other Reeps buried in the cemetery. I hope this helps someone! Lynn Wesson Raleigh, NC

I recently visited Catawba County and saw the Rock Barn on Frederick Hoke's old homeplace. Actually, I should say that I saw what was left of it. The lady who lives there was gracious enough to let me and my family members walk up to it and crawl through the bushes to see the only remaining side that is completely made of rock. Does anyone know more about when this structure was built? A family legend that was passed down by my great-uncle Ernest Dagenhart, indicates that our ancestor, Heinrich Degenhard (Henry Dagenhart) helped to build it along with other men from the neighborhood. Any thoughts or other legends related to the Rock Barn?
Would one of you kind people do a census lookup for me? I'm looking for Emanuel Bolch (could be Bolick, Bolich or Boliek) on the 1860 census. His mother is Elizabeth Bolch and his father is Solomon Bolch. He was born abt 1835 (15 on the 1850 census). He died sometime in 1862 during the Civil War. I have never listed a wife for him but it dawned on me yesterday that he would have been 25 or 26 when he left for the War so he could have been married. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Melanie Coyl
Need help with the following information: Lewis E. Lefever married Catherine "Kate" Fowler, had three children, Maggie, Author, Mary. Lewis was born ca. 1835 possibly in Lincoln County. Does anyone have information of either Lewis' or Kate's ancestors? Also, the 1840 Lincoln County Census lists a Campbell Lefever with one son under 5 and one son 5-10. Also woman 20-30. Does anyone have any information of this family? Perhaps this is the family of Lewis mentioned above? Any insight greatly appreciated. Pat
I don't know how much you have worked in Catawba records. However, may I suggest that you will find some information in an article on the Gortner-Frye connection that will be interesting to you. Clara Shook and I put together everything that we had on these families. The article appeared in "Catawba Cousins". In accordance with the will of Philip Fry [dated 11 Feb. 1786], Philip Fry and his wife Elizabeth, gave 240 A to George Icard on both sidesof Hopp Creek. Lincoln County, NC Deed Book 3:24. [Philip Fry was the son of Nicholas Fry and Maria Elisabeth Pope/Pabst, who in 1787 married 2) Michael Whitener.] In this article, you will find abstracts of the seven deeds of Philip Fry and his wife, Elisabeth, which appear to be his division to his children. This Gortner/Frye relationship is complex, so you will need to read through all the records, which we have tried to supply for you. The Frye records of Col. George M. Yoder were from his memory, and are incorrect in many places. Use this material with care. I don't have the date the article appeared in "Catawba Cousins",.
