    3. Hello List, Would appreciate hearing from any of you researchers who may know the location of these two old Burke Co. creeks, (copied verbatim from the 1844 Warrant) "...in the county of Burke on the waters of Cold Ass Creek commencing at the Bear Branch Fork..." or what name they are known by today? These creeks are not shown on any map I have yet seen.

    1. [CATAWBA-WEST] BUFF, HOYLE, SWOFFORD, WORTMAN
    2. Anybody researching the above name, please email me privately. I HAVE SOME ORIGAINAL DOCUMENTS (most are hand written)OF LAND TRANSACTIONS THAT ARE PRICELESS!! The documents date in range of 1800 to 1918! 1800..land survey with hand drawn map. Signatures or marks of Wm. Swafford and Henry Hoyle. Beginning.. By Virtue of a warrant 1769 the 16th of Jan 1800. Survey for Martin Hoyle, eithy acres of land in Rutherford County lying on the Knob Creek. (anybody have any idea as to what "by virtue of warrant" means) This cocument will copy to one letter size sheet. 1848.. This document is in regards to the same land. It appears as if Henry Hoyle, son of Marting Hoyle is selling the land to Wm. Swofford. Signatures and or marks: Martin Hoyle, Henry Hoyle, David Hoyle, J.H. Wortman, M. Wortman, Michael Worman, Hannah Wortman, J.W. Swofford, Sarah Swofford, Nancy Swofford, Elizabeth Swofford, Katharine Newton, J. H. Swofford, ? Miller, James P. Swofford. Witness (signature and or mark) Jesse Cook & Peter Buff This document is on a large piece of paper and will require profession copying in order to copy it in its entirety. Cost at this time is unknown, but I will be finding out sometime this week. 1801.. Martin Hoyle. I am not sure what this document pertains to as of yet. It is in about 6 pieces and I have not gotten a chance to piece it back together. It does however pertain to land in Rutherford Co. 1886..Seventy Eight Dollars, lawful money of the United States of America, recievd by the agent of the heirs ans assigns of the said Isaac Bronson and Goold Hoyt, in the State of North Carolina, and for thier use, and on the approval of Willett Bronson, Superintneteding Agent, endororsed hereon, we, the said William Redmon, Jr, by Francis M. Scott, his attorney, and Francis M. Scott, Trustees, as foresaid, have bargined, sold, released, and confimend, and by these present do herby bargain, sell, release and confimn unto the said Wm Swafford all that certain peice or parcel of land, situate in the County of Cleveland. Seventy eightacres on the land in Said county on the Waters of Knob Creek Patent #1027 This document goes on to record the land survey. At one time I think this document was in one piece, but now, it is in 2. It has come apart at the fold. So, this one would be easy enough to make copies of. May 1886. This document is for that an area of land Patent 1027 for 57 acres adoining the land of Wm Swofford as mentioned above (Waters on Knob Creek). All above metioned are involved with the exception of Isaac Bronson and Wm. Swofford. this document if very large and printed on a rice type paper. It too will have to be professionally copied. 1919.. Mortgage Deed for land in Cleveland Co. Township 10. Purchased by David Buff and Mittie Sain Buff. Bryson Hoyle signs and seals the document as Notary Public. His signature does apppear along with the notary seal that bares his name. This document is double sided and legal size. It will have to be professionally copied. My copier will not do documents this large in their entirety. (If it does, I have not yet figured it out) This is all I have come across so far. I found these in a wooden box of papers belonging to my grandfather David Buff. I have yet to finish going through all of the contents of the box. I do apologize for this posting being so lengthy, but I wanted to include a brief description of each document. For those of interest in any of these documents, please email me privately. I would love to hear from you. My BUFF married into Hoyle, Swofford and Wortman (Workman) famalies. Vicki Buff Quillan Texas

    2. The annual Rhyne Reunion just finished this weekend in Dallas, Gaston County, North Carolina. The Reunion Committee met following the reunion and has decided to make next year's reunion one to remember for years. There will be a bus tour of historical sites of the Rhyne family roots, games for the children, genealogy and historical workshops, and more...Basically an all out effort. The reunion in 2001 will be held Friday August 5th and Saturday August 6th in Dallas, North Carolina. Please place this on your calendars and plan on attending. The Rhyne Reunion is for those families that descend from Jacob Rhyne and Lisabeth Glattfelder; Thomas Rhyne and Elizabeth Rudisill; and Hans Martin Rein(eau) and Magdalena Freymuller. Other friends are also welcome! Another note....Funding for placing a Memorial Marker in the Wolf Cemetery in York County, Pennsylvania is progressing nicely and should see a marker placement in the next year. This marker will memorialize Hans Martin Reineau and Magdalena Freymiller and family. More information will follow...

All my home telephones were destroyed by lightning on August 1st and I am just now able to get back online. [So you'll know I do in fact appreciate your writing me, but have been unable to communicate by e-mail except at my office where the "legal" work of my attorney-employer must take priority over my own genealogy work.] We have combed the Albemarle Parish Register in Richmond (and have some of the transcriptions) which have also been studied with great care; however, we have been unable to "link" our Nathaniel Meacham/Mitchum, born 1780 to anyone except Henry, born 1766 about which I wrote on the Catawba-West rootsweb page. You are absolutely correct that it is uncanny the resemblance between the names of the children of Banks, born 1748, of Sussex County, Virginia, and those of our Nathaniel. He and his wife, Jemima Reynolds Mitchum were married in October of 1801 in Lincoln County, North Carolina, and had 13 children, as follows: [We are not 100% sure of the order of birth, but have taken this information from census and other records.] This is generally correct, though: 1. Joshua Mitchum, born 1802, died 1833, Lincoln County, North Carolina; married on January 20, 1825 to Amie Williams, born 1810, died in the 1870's in Cleveland County, North Carolina. Nine children: A female who died very young and whose name never appeared on census or any other record we have found; William M.; Joseph B., 1835-1861 (my ancestor); Robert Joshua; Hugh C.; Lawson Sidney; Susannah; Dulcenia; and James. Sarah (Sally) Mitchum, born 1809, died?; married first to Thomas Cline on October 18, 1825 and secondly to Henry Johnson in 1833, both in Lincoln County, North

    1. [CATAWBA-WEST] Catawba Cemeteries
    2. I hope somebody can help me with this one. I found a sheet I had printed out from a previous email from that past that contained some of my BUFF line, the name of the cemetery and what looks to be a book number and page number. I'm not even sure if these cemeteries are in Catawaba Co. or which county they are in. But, if somebody has some sort of book that these are listed in, could you please look up the following for me? BUFF, Vergie Leatherman 3:187 Wilkie's Grove Baptist BUFF, Vinie 2:066 Mt. Ruhama Baptist BUFF, Marth Ann Downs 1:046 Bethel Methodist BUFF, Hugh Thurman 5:153 Maiden City Cemetery Thanks for your time Vicki BUFF QUILLAN Texas

    1. [CATAWBA-WEST] server problems
    2. Derick S. Hartshorn
    3. Dear List folks, Recently you may have seen a message that indicates that your list administrator (me, Derick Hartshorn) is an "unknown user." Please be aware that I am still here and virtually all messages are being sent to subscribers. A problem might exist with my server (Wave Communications, Inc.) but that should not effect your ability to receive mail. I have received quite a few messages from other servers, AOL in particular, notifying me that certain users are "unknown." This appears to be a universal problem which occurs from time to time and is totally unpredictable. The system will automatically unsub anyone that has four bounces so I don't know how many folks have been removed due to the problems experienced by their servers. Whether this is due to sun spots, server gremlins or whatever, I'm still here and the lists are still up and being maintained. Regards, --Derick S. Hartshorn Asst. 2. Andrew Billinghurst
    3. Hi, **This message is being sent to the CATAWBA-WEST mailing list.** The email address that RootsWeb has for the CATAWBA-WEST list admin [email protected] is bouncing, so RootsWeb is looking to make contact with the list admin. Will the list admin please contact Andrew Billinghurst ([email protected]) so that we know that you are still maintaining this list. List members there is nothing for you to worry about and nothing for you to do, it is probably just an email problem for the person looking after the day-to-day management of this list. Thanks! Andrew Billinghurst, RootsWeb Staff [email protected]
