Hi Dan and List, Sidney Yount is my Great Grandfather, son of John and Anna Pope - Yount. My guess is Sid Yount and Sidney are the same people. I also would like to know why he would sign a Bastardy Bond for an unmarried women? Does this make him the father? As far as I know they are not his sisters. I don't know what connection to the Gant's Sidney was. So who ever can answer your questions I hope can answer mine to. Thanks, Jean Jondreau
Does anyone have information on the following bastardy bonds? 3/1878 Sarra Gant - bondsmen, Sidney Yount, C. F. Connor 3/1879 Lousa Gant - bondsman, Sid Yount, Franklin Campbell Who are the Gant's and Yount's parents? Thank you. Dan Miller
Linda Hoyle, Would you please contact me by email? Thanks, Robert Carpenter

Help, I need information! In 1899 my Mother was baptised by Pastor Arndt who was pastor of Bethel Lutheran Church at Iron Station, NC. I have not been able to find information stating the exact location of such a congregationl. I would appreciate any help that you can offer in locating the exact place where this Church or Congregation met. My Mother attended a Stroup School House which was located on Hovis Family Land just south of the Seaboard Railroad just about one mile south-east of Iron Station, NC. For those who are familiar with the area, this was very near the location of what was a Chicken processing plant in the 1950's and 1960's. When I first looked at my Mothers Baptism Certificate, I was thinking that the Pastor was from Bethel Church near Pasour's Mountain. I had never known that there was a Congregation named Bethel in Iron Station. The reason I think this congregation met at this particular school House is the fact that this was the school house that my Mother walked to for her eitht years of education. I also found a reference in History that perosns of the Baptist Faith were holding services at the Stroup School House. The location was not given. In my early years it seemed that we always went to Mt. Zion Baptist Church, east of Alexis every year for their HOME COMING Service. Now that I have become familiar with History, this must have been done to keep in touch with members of the Phillip Hovis family, expecially the children of his second wife, Delaney "Laney" Stroup. If you have information which shows that this idea is all wrong, Plese let me know. Help confirm my guess or tell me I am wrong. Have a great Day. Pat C. Cloninger Newton, NC.

Who were the parents of Philip Hovis, b. abt. 1806 in NC, who married Delaney Stroup in Lincoln Co., and whose children included Munro, Moses, Martha, Laban, Frances, Philip, and Ephraim? Reiley Kidd Seattle
Who was the father of Solomon Hovis, b. abt. 1823 in NC, found on the 1850 federal census in Gaston Co., NC with wife Ann, and children Francis (4M) and G.P. (1M)? He's next door to Susannah Hovis, apparently a widow, age 60, who may be his mother. I'm questioning a relationship between the Hovis family and my Eli Stroup, b. about 1801. Thanks, Reiley Kidd Seattle
Hello Don, Would you give us that question again, I am not able to understand you. When you say detail do you mean you want to know about the cemetaries or do you need all of the extracts for the Lail entries. I did not know that they were in the Gen Soc publication, I have them in the form of 8 seperate books that were published over a long period of time and are still available for purchase from them - Contact Catawba County Gen Society, P. O. Box 2406, Hickory, NC 18603. They cost $15.00 each plus $2.00 postage. If you buy them all at once that postage cost may be different. If you write to them for info please send a stamped self addressed envelope if you expect a reply. (Most Societies are no long answering queries that do not include such an envelope) As far as a CD is concerned, great idea - perhaps you should do that..... but if you do or if anyone does please don't forget all of us who use a MAC and so need to be able to make use of it also. Where are the St. John's records and have they been microfilmed? Making copies from a microfilm is not difficult and if the LDS have filmed those records as they have so many others, they should be available at any Family History Center. William S. Powell, "The North Carolina Gazetteer," (UNC Press: 1968) Coldass Creek rises in nw Caldwell County and flows east into Johns River. Both this and Pinchgut Creek were named by two men hunting in the area . . . Sometimes shown as Cold Water Creek on modern maps. [The two men are not named.]

"The North Carolina Gazetteer" by William S. Powell states "Coldass Creek rises in nw Caldwell County and flows e into Johns River. Both this and Pinchgut Creek were named by two men hunting in the area. They followed a stream until it came to a fork. There they separated, each following one of the forks, and agreed to meet later and name each stream according to their feelings toward it. One man carried the food and the other the sleeping equipment. They became lost, but finally met the next day when they gave the two names to the creeks. Sometimes shown as Cold Water Creek on modern maps." The same book lists thirteen Bear Branches but none of them is in Caldwell County. Jim Campbell

Can you believe I spent about 1 and half hours trying to find out about your creeks in Burke Co NC......I found all sort of things but not those particular creeks......I was intrigued. Now I am impressed to know how many ways the word creek is used. Winnette These two sites were informative.
