If the book is available for purchase, please post the information to this site or send me an email with the details. If it is no longer available, perhaps different ones on this list could let us know which libraries they have found it in so we could request interlibrary loans. The "book" referred to is actually a presentation made by James W. Miller at the Nov 28, 1989 meeting of the Catawba County Genealogical Society. It was later published in the Jan 1990 issue of the society's journal, "Catawba Cousins", Vol 4, No. 3. The presentation did not discuss specific grants, but rather the mechanics of platting grants and deeds. In another article by James W. Miller in "Catawba Cousins", Vol 2, No. 1, July 1987, on Burke County Land Entries in the Newton Area of Present Day Catawba County, NC, there is a map showing the location of a grant to Adam Bolick. The article explains that NC began issuing land grants in 1778, but many of the applicants had "squatted" on the land 10 to 15 years previously. Adam Bolick's grant for 640 acres on 8 Dec 1779 was on Macklings (McLin's) Creek with the Oxford Ford road going through the property. Long Branch, a tributary of Macklings Creek also flowed through the property. Joing the grant to the north were those of Gilbreath Falls and Peter Deal. To the east was Everhardt Rikeman, to the south was Frederick Graff, and to the west was Albert Corpening. Dear Robert, Thanks for your interest in the continuing conflict regarding the old Jacob Dellinger cemetery on Randleman Rd. In Iron Station. The matter is still ion the court system with our next court date the week of October 9th, 2000. We have had some setbacks and victories concerning procedural errors but I think our case is sound and anticipate the court to rule in our favor. I will keep the list informed of the outcome. Some time back a Neal Caskey put an item out on a cemetery conflict (the old Jacob Dellinger cemetery) in Iron Station, NC, eastern Lincoln County.. I am wondering if this has ever been resolved? This was back in January this year when he put the item out. Is there a list of persons buried in this cemetery available? It seems that the property owners did not want to let anyone enter the cemetery and look at the grave stones. It had apparently gotten to the point of Law suits. If any one has any information on this I would be pleased to hear from them. Robert Peter
Dear List, For this week, ancestry.com has a free database of Arkansas Marriages, 1851-1900. Both Pope and Yell Counties are included, although the description of the database doesn't mention Pope Co. Since many persons from Gaston and surrounding counties moved to these counties in the 1840's - 1870's, this may be of interest to list members. Please help me clear up an old family mystery -- who was Squire Caldwell? Actually, Squire Caldwell was my great-great-great grandfather, but the story is more involved than that. Here it is. According to my grandmother, now deceased, a Warner Howard of Lincoln, North Carolina, was legally married a Cherokee woman and had nine children, names listed below. Children: i Henry Howard ii Patsy Howard iii Sully Howard. iv Becky Howard. v Polly Howard. vi Thomas Howard. vii Annie Howard. viii Martie Howard. ix Nancy Howard. Daughter Nancy Howard, never married, was a mistress to Squire Caldwell. “Squire,” my grandmother says, is not a name, but a title. Together, Nancy Howard and Squire Caldwell had an illegitimate son, John Milton Howard, who was born 09 May 1851 in Lincoln. Squire acknowledged paternity and paid for John’s education, such as it was. John was said to be a bookish person. As a young man, he was an itinerant school teacher who moved from place to place, teaching for a little money and living with the families of his students. He later married Rachel Ladora Robinson over the objections of her father, John Simpson Robinson. Anyway, back to Squire Caldwell. I found that a Henry Caldwell (born 30 June 1842; lived in Catawba) went under the name “Squire Caldwell,” but Henry is too young to have been John’s father (Henry was nine when John was born). A more promising candidate is a J.D. Caldwell, justice of the peace in Catawba County in the late 1850s and early 1860s. Also, a John D. Caldwell (not John David Caldwell (b. 1831, d. 1903), who was someone else) served as a captain in the 89th NC Militia, which was organized in Catawba County. I wouldn’t be surprised if J.D. and John D. were the same person ? it would seem that a justice of the peace would also serve as a captain in the local militia. Even so, I’ve been unable to establish that my Squire Caldwell is J.D. Caldwell (or anyone else, for that matter). Has anyone ever run across a Squire Caldwell in his or her research? Who was he?

Pat Jones Smith BRIDGETON MEMORIAL PARK Bridgeton, Missouri 1843 -------- 1963 This burying ground at 4616 Long Road was made into a memorial park in 1962. In 1959 several lawsuits were filed against the City for allowing the cemetery to deteriorate. Individual stones had already been removed "through error and misunderstanding" but members of the Bridgeton Historical Commission were able to learn the names of some who were buried there and a large monument was erected in 1963 which bears this inscription, "We honor the people buried here. They were part of this nations adventure and their vision lighted the path we follow today." At the dedication ceremonies, Mrs. Anna Wilson gave a talk about colored veterans who are buried here. Records indicate that the cemetery was integrated from its beginning in 1858. It was in use as late as 1954 and at least 100 people are buried in the two acres. Greetings Everyone: Once again I am stuck in the Frederick Wise Manuscript! I have the following: Prior Sylvanus Pasour b. 25 Aug 1859? d. 25 Nov 1945 M. 9 Sept 1880 Rebecca M. Carpenter b. 15 Oct 1861 d. 8 May 1932 dau of Jacob and Elizabeth Griffon Carpenter. Previous Info: Prior was son of Frances Carpenter, dau of George, and Eli/Levi Pasour, son of George and Elizabeth Wise Pasour. Fact: Prior's Marriage record in Gaston Co. list's his parents as Eph. Wise and Frances Pasour Which indicates he was a Base born son of his parents. Otherwise (if following the traditional pattern)parents would have been listed as a married couple. Previous Info: Frances Carpenter Pasour m. later to Ephriam Wise. I can not find any evidence of this, nor have the others. Frances Pasour remains Frances Pasour throught records. The Shocker: After Prior's marriage to Rebecca Carpenter he assumes the name Prior Sylvanus Carpenter and is forever known as such. His descendants also use the name Carpenter. Fact: George Pasour made no provision in his will for children of his son Eli/Levi who was reputedly killed in CW. Fact: Felix (son of George) Pasour had a daughter Frances b. 1842, somewhat younger than Frances Carpenter b. 1835. Her age is more consistant with the census data through 1880. She was age 16, living in the home of her Pasour grandparents 1860 (probably helping care for them. 1870 Frances Pasour age 30 is living in home of Phillip Pasour, another of George's sons) with her two sons, Prior S. age 11 and James age 9,Pasour. James is not found on later records. Anyone know what happened to him? If Frances was actually a Carpenter, m. Eli/Levi Pasour , had a son Prior by Eph Wise, who changed his name to Carpenter after marriage, Did George Carpenter make a provision in his Will or land division or otherwise acknowledge this? Talk about confusion! Then who was James' father? George Pasour made no provision for these two children as children of Eli/Levi. I need to know if these two sons are actually a part of the Pasour/Wise family. If Prior was son of Eph Wise he would be, but under Eph's lineage.... HELP ANYONE!!!!! Lorena Can anyone out there solve this puzzle? Is there a death record that for him that would list his parents names and confirm the birthdate? ____________________________________________________________________ Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://home.netscape.com/webmail
