I recently received a query regarding Thomas Winkler & Rhoda Poovey. His lineage is unknown to me. Rhoda seems to be the daughter of William & Harriet (Mauney) Boovey/Poovey. The CSA participation in this line is nothing less than astounding. I last contacted a Ginger Smith nearly two years ago. At the time, she messaged (as a non-subscribed poster): >From ???@??? Tue Aug 07 20:00:47 2001 To: ginger smith <brimicgin@earthlink.net> From: Derick <derickh@charter.net> Subject: Re: [CATAWBA-WEST] A Guide to Military Organizations and Installations-North Carolina 1861-1865 Derick, This message is for anyone who may be related to Poovey's, Houck's, or Link's. I have just received the most wonderful picture of Catherine Link Houck wife of Leander Houck and 9 of her children. The picture is about 100 years old. Included are five sons--John, Robert "Bob"; Caldwell, Henry Lafayette, Frank Clay, and Rev. Wm Henry.; The four daughters included are Mary Houck Powell, Martha Houck Poovey (my greatgrandmother), Laura J. Houck Curley and Annie Don Houck Lefevre. If anyone has an interest in this or is related and would like to share info please contact me. -Ginger Smith I posted this message, as received. Since then, Ginger has disappeared. If anyone knows of her, or if anyone would like to explore that Poovey line of William and Harriet, please post back. Also, if anyone can connect Harrison Houk, please chime in as well. I'm just plain curious. --Derick ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----
Due to two recent computer crashes I have lost a goodly portion of my email addresses. Many of these were from people wanting to know more about my list for "GERMAN SPEAKING PEOPLE West Of the Catawba River IN NC 1750-1800. Mac Hayes here, group coordinator for the Family Tree DNA <Killian> group. The basic information has been posted on the KILLIAN-L list before; I am reposting and including several other lists that may have members interested in the KILLIAN/KILIAN/KILLION lines. In particular I think it would be interesting to get some Irish Killians to take part in this group. One of my distant cousins had always assumed he was of Irish descent, so was surprised to find his father's test identified him as a member of the German Killian descendants. Other "Irish" Killians might also be surprised and informed by taking part in DNA tests. So far there are only four Killians who have submitted samples. Two of the group are 'certified' descendants of Andreas, and two are not. Preliminary analysis of the results seem to confirm the liklihood of a common ancestor for all four group members, within a couple of generations prior to Andreas. DNA testing is an exercise in Statistics; positive proof of relationships is not verifiable by DNA testing alone. For many researchers the value of such tests is primarily in deciding whether it is worth continuing a search for documentation along a particular line. Using the most stringent (25-marker) test available for genealogical purposes, one of this group is within a single-step mutation of the other three members. The other three have two single-step mutation differences from each other. For more information on DNA testing, see the Frequently Asked Questions at this web site: http://www.familytreedna.com/faq.html The test done by the four current group members is the Y-DNAPlus 25 Marker Test. Family Tree DNA charges $171 for this test ($169 + $2 postage); there are a number of other companies that do similar tests, but the others seem to take longer, and charge more. Mac
Hi folks, >From time to time most of us receive a query from someone who has hit a brick-wall. Since the philosophy of the vast majority of us is to help others when we are able, here's a challenge. Ray, I can't locate the cemetery for you, but Mapquest shows what they call Greedy Highway going off 127 about a half mile north of Propst Crossroads and travelling west across Jacobs Ford and then along Camp Creek. It runs for a bit until it runs into the old Shelby Highway a little north of where Providence Church Rd. runs into Old Shelby Road. I just ran the USGS topo maps along Greedy Hwy, which is on those maps as SR 1120, and there is no cemetery shown on there. Sorry I can't pinpoint the exact area..... Hope this helps.... Would someone who has a good Catawba County map please look up the location of the Hudson Family Cemetery which is listed in Vol 2 of Catawba County Cemeteries as being on Greedy Creek Road (SR 1120), a right turn from Highway 127 south of Hickory? How far is this road from the nearest town or community such as Hickory, Brookford, or Propst Crossroads? Y'all, I currently have a large database of names that originate in Catawba/Lincoln/Burke counties. I'll be happy to share what others have shared with me. Ann Propst, Mimi Harbinson and a host of other folks have sent me GEDCOM files and information that ties together the folks that lived in our area. Lists of these families but may provide a hint or clue to other reachers. If anyone would like to search through family descendant files (currently housed at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/ccgsfam.htm ), that foundation has been provided. Folks may send their lists to me---or they can wait until I produce some family lists, (based on what is in my database). I am a firm believer in people helping people. The current lists may be a little old but I hope to update them soon. As with all posted materials, no guarantees are made as to accuracy--they are designed to serve only as a guide. References and sources will always be provided upon request. I am currently working on the creation of database of all NC Confederate soldiers. The ultimate goal is a compresensive database of all CSA soldiers, sailors, marines and reserve forces. Any help is urgently solicited. Best wishes, --Derick S. Hartshorn, list owner
Dear friends, I'm happy to report that we now have the very first New Hampshire town RootsWeb mailing list. Amherst claims the distinction of being home to educator and US presidential candidate, Horace Greeley (1811-1872). It is also the home of my 3rd great grandfather, pioneer and Revolutionary War patriot, John Hartshorn (1744-1830). I want to share what I have and make the Amherst site http://www.rootsweb.com/~nhcamher/ a benefit to all visitors. Now, for the mailing list. I'm sure you are all familiar with how they operate. I currently maintain six RootsWeb lists--this will be my seventh. My goal is provide an opportunity for all folks to share a common interest. I will certainly contribute to all my lists, as I am able. Everything that appears on these lists is permanently archived. For information on RootsWeb lists or to check back through existing archives, see: http://lists.rootsweb.com/ Our new list is called NH-HILLSBOROUGH-AMHERST-L@rootsweb.com And here's the Administrivia: OK, good news: your mailing list is ready to roll. Briefly (very), people can subscribe to your list in mail mode by sending a message to NH-HILLSBOROUGH-AMHERST-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains the word subscribe and nothing else. If they prefer digest mode, they should send the command instead to NH-HILLSBOROUGH-AMHERST-D-request@rootsweb.com. To unsubscribe, they should send the command "unsubscribe" to NH-HILLSBOROUGH-AMHERST-L-request@rootsweb.com (if in mail mode) or NH-HILLSBOROUGH-AMHERST-D-request@rootsweb.com (if in digest mode.) To switch from one mode to the other, they should unsubscribe from one and then subscribe to the other. There is no "no mail" mode -- if they want messages to stop, they should simply unsubscribe. (Suggestion: use these commands to subscribe to NH-HILLSBOROUGH-AMHERST-L, as no one at all is currently subscribed, and then send a test message through. Take your list for a test drive, in other words.) To post to both NH-HILLSBOROUGH-AMHERST-L and NH-HILLSBOROUGH-AMHERST-D, messages should be sent to NH-HILLSBOROUGH-AMHERST-L@rootsweb.com. Messages sent there will appear both places. If you are unclear about the other protocol, see: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ Thanks, I look forward to a very friendly and productive list. Derick S. Does anyone have access to a copy of Volume IV of North Carolina Troops, 1861 - 1865? I am looking for more information on George M. Kiser, Co. H, 5th NC. I am trying to determine if he might be a collateral relative and also a descendant of pioneer Lorentz/ Lawrence Kiser of Lincoln County, NC. George M. I will be attending a memorial event at Woodlawn Cemetery and if the weather cooperates, I would be willing to take a gravestone photo for any members of the list who might also have a Civil War relative buried in the military section of the Cemetery.
