Kathy, I have found numerous Caswells in estern NYS. In Randolph (western Cattaraugus Co.), in the 1880 census, there are Gillespie and family, George S. and family, Simeon alone with child age 5, Thaddeus and family, and David and family. This family may very well be descended from Samuel Caswell, Rev. War soldier. In Ischua and Lyndon Town, there are Charles and family, D.W. (Decimal) and family, and Renselaer and wife. These three families are mine; they are sons of Anthony and Sally Lockwood. In Allegany County, in the early 1800s, there is Zephaniah Z. Caswell (per Cattaraugus County History, 1893). My Caswells were in Ischua as early as 1824, with Anthony having come from Rhode Island. I have his father's estate papers and numerous listings of Caswells in cemeteries in and near Ischua. There is even a private Caswell Cemetery in Ischua. Someone else also replied to my query on the web saying he had Caswells in Steuben County. (Steuben is east of Allegany which is east of Cattaraugus.) Have you any idea where your Joshua came from? My Anthony came alone from Hopkinton, RI (by way of Connecticut, Charleston, SC and Schenectady, NY where he worked on construction of the Erie Canal). I have found his father, Allen, and grandfather, William in Hopkinton, also his siblings. I wonder if your Joshua is related to Samuel (above) who was b. 1757 at Mansfield, Mass. Hope we can make a connection. Details of my family are in my gedcom on the Moonrakers site. I have more census info on the "other" Caswells, above, that I'll be glad to share.
