    3. I, too, have Caswells in NY in the late1700s/early 1800s - but I'm not sure where! I have hit the veritable "brick wall" after several years of searching. Here's the short version of the story: My gg-grandmother, Electa Jane Caswell was born 11 Mar 1821, somewhere in NY state. She married Justus Hall, Jr. in La Grange Co., IN on 8 Apr 1838. I do not know for sure who her father was, but I suspect it was a Joseph Caswell who was bought land, and settled in La Grange Co. in the mid-1830s. Electa and Justus Jr. moved to Bureau Co., IL before the 1840 census. There is a Joseph Caswell also listed on that census, who is between the age of 40-50. In addition, he is listed as an early settler of Bureau Co., and was elected Justice of the Peace during the 1840s. After 1846, he drops from the record. I have searched the NY 1820 census records, and found only one Joseph Caswell household with a male the right age to be the above mentioned Joseph Caswell. It is in Jersey Twp., Steuben Co., NY. There is another Joseph Caswell household in Exeter Twp., Otsego Co. Of course, if Joseph IS Electa's father, he and his wife might still have been living with his parents or his wife's parents when Electa was born in 1820. But I do not know Joseph's father's name. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Cheryl F. Luginbill timetraveler@apex2000.net
