Hi Gang, just got back from our annual ghost conference in Gettysburg, PA. I looked up New Salem, MA for you. It is in Franklin county, just south of the NH border. Not farm from the Quabbin Reservoir on Rte 202. Northeast of Shutesbury. I know there were Caswell's in that area in the 1800's. I ran across some doing research on one of my other families. By the way, does anyone know where New Salem is? I found Middleboro and thought it might be near but can't seem to find it. Thanks Debbie
Sorry Tom. I have a possible cousin named Barnabas b about 1793 in New Salem, living in Shutesbury at his death in 1854 with parents listed as Barnabas and Mary. Prudentia appeared on the 1850 census living with him with no relationship noted. He was indexed as Coswell, so that took me awhile. I'll keep my eyes out for your guys. Debbie
Debbie, I am really curious about your Pratt-Caswell connection. I too have a Pratt- Caswell connection , would you like to talk about it? I finally have parents for my brickwall Caswell's! (Prudentia and Elkanah) Death records list the parents as Elijah Caswell from Middleboro, MA and Mary Caswell from New Salem, MA. Birthplace for Prudence was Shutesbury MA about 1786-1787 Birthplace for Elkanah was New Salem, MA about May 1800 Does anyone have a clue who Elijah and Mary are? Thanks Debbie
Do any of you have record of a Benjamin Franklin Caswell that was born May 22, 1828? We do not know for certain who his father was. He was from around this area. Any help would be appreciated. His mother died when he was younger and his father remarried. He had a sister named Alma. Congratulations on your breakthrough from someone still staring at a brick wall. Do you have any information on whether Prudentia and Elkanah may have had an older brother (or cousin?) named Levi Caswell? Levi is my great-great grandfather and was born in Connecticut in 1778. Is there anything in your information that might place Elijah and Mary in Conn. around that time? Levi married Asenath Hubbard (also of Conn.) in East Hampton, Middlesex, Connecticut on 17 Nov. 1799 (or in Exeter, N.Y. on Dec. 17, 1798, according to another source), so he seems to have pretty solid Connecticut roots - at least until he moved to Otsego County, N.Y., some time before 1811. If anyone else can help me locate Levi's parents, feel free to chime in! Still looking for ancestors/descendants of Irving Ellsworth Caswell (1884-1924) of Massachusetts/Rhode Island. Irving Ellsworth Caswell married Bessie Furey who had come from Ireland in 1899. The marriage most likely took place between 1900 & 1905 and was probably in Massachusetts or Rhode Island. Irving was listed as a toolmaker/jeweler. Two sons: Raymond Lexington b. April 19, 1906--d-Dec. 1974) Earl Ellsworth Caswell b October 15, 1911-d Sept 1, 1991 Update: According to his death certificate (which I just received): Irving Ellsworth Caswell was born on Sept 7, 1884 in Attleboro Massachusetts to Herbert Caswell and Mary White (who was said to be a Narragansett Indian). Both Herbert and Mary were born in Rehoboth, Massachusetts. I have heard that Herbert was probably married at least twice. I'm guessing Mary was his first wife, because another child was born as late as 1919 (unless these two Herberts are a father and son...). I'm also guessing that Herbert was born sometime around 1860. Does anybody have a Herbert in their line who fits this description? Thanks! Judy Caswell

Never heard of him, sorry! So, I've posted your request to the Caswell listserver. Maybe someone else has heard of him and will get in touch! I hope these names mean something to someone. They are registered as being buried in the Colusa Community Cemetery, in Colusa, California. Since these were passed on to me by someone who was being helpful, I don't know what the numbers mean, but they are probably from the following URL http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/californ.html CASWELL, A M 12 CASWELL, A P 12 CASWELL, Almon H 11 CASWELL, Amelia G 12 CASWELL, Arthur 65 CASWELL, Arthur W 12 CASWELL, Grandma 67 CASWELL, Helen Belle 11 CASWELL, Lonnie 72 CASWELL, Parker W 12 CASWELL, William Connie
