One of the epitaphs in a previous message reads: "The grave of Ellen Shannon in Girard, Pennsylvania, Who was fatally burned March 21, 1870, by the explosion of a lamp filled with "R.E. Danforth's Non-Explosive Burning Fluid" Danforth's fluid was responsible for more deaths than one. The third child of my great-grandfather, Judge Thomas Hubbard Caswell, was killed in November, 1872 in the aftermath of a similar explosion. The following excerpt from my biographical sketch of Judge Caswell recounts this story, researched from newspapers of Nevada City, California and the letters of a neighbor: "A Terrible Accident On November 28, 1872 (Thanksgiving Day?), young Earl was to be the victim of a tragic accident, becoming the third son to die in childhood, less than a month from his thirteenth birthday. As the oldest son in the family, Earl had a number of daily household chores to perform. One of these was to start a fire in the wood-burning kitchen stove to take the morning chill off the house. On that fateful Thursday morning, Earl followed his usual routine, placing papers at the bottom of the stove, then pitch pine kindling and finally heavier oak firewood above that. He lit the papers, but they appeared to burn out without catching the wood on fire. Reluctant to remove everything and repeat the whole process, he found a gallon can of "Danforth's non-explosive fluid" to pour on the uncooperative wood. No sooner had he started to pour than two facts became terribly apparent: first, the fire was not, as he had supposed, completely out, and second, the name of the fluid he used was tragically inaccurate. There was a "tremendous explosion" which enveloped young Earl and the entire room in flames. Judge Caswell, hearing the explosion and screams, rushed to the kitchen and started tearing his son's burning clothing off, at the same time carrying him into the bedroom where his wife smothered the flames with a blanket. The Judge himself suffered severe burns to his hands, arms and legs, but his courageous efforts proved to be in vain. Dr. Hunt was immediately sent for, but told the parents that in view of the severity of the burns, there was nothing that could be done. They could only try to make the boy as comfortable as possible for the few remaining hours he had left on earth. Family friend and neighbor Mary Searles described the scene: "He (Earl) died after 12 hours of suffering. The neighbors rushed in and saved the house by great exertions. I went up and finding Mrs. Caswell quite overcome by the shock, I took her place with the poor suffering child, as well as I could, and staid with them all that night. I had always thought a great deal of the boy, and I could not bear to leave him to strangers care, though there were plenty ready to do all they could for them. It was a terrible sight and a sad task to care for the patient uncomplaining boy, and try to calm the almost frantic mother and the father, who was almost helpless from his own burns. It took me several days and nights to get over it so that I could think or dream of anything else." When I read the reference to "Danforth's non-explosive fluid," I was reminded of this family tragedy. If any of you are interested in the complete biographical sketch, which I have entitled "Glimpses into the life of Thomas Hubbard Caswell," I'll be happy to send you a copy. I have it in PDF format, which I can attach to an e-mail. I had intended to send it with this message, but just learned the hard way that attachments aren't acceptable via Rootsweb. I hope this will be of interest to some of you. Regards, Thomas Hubbard Caswell III -
I got this on another list and just had to share it with all of you: WERE YOUR ANCESTORS BEAMED DOWN BY ALIENS? NEW DNA EVIDENCE. Copyright 2000 by Fredric Z. Saunders Scientists at The National Academy for the Study of UFO's have recently confirmed the existence of the "UFO chromosome." While most genealogists are aware of the x chromosome, passed from one female generation to the next, and the y chromosome, from which it is possible to determine descent in an uninterrupted male lineage from a common ancestor, the "UFO chromosome" had previously been only speculation. Working with DNA recovered from the aliens of the Roswell, New Mexico crash, the scientists have discovered the "UFO chromosome" is also present in some humans. This discovery confirms that aliens have been breeding with humans for centuries, and beaming their progeny back to earth. For the "low" price of $10,000, they will test your DNA to see if you possess the "UFO chromosome." While the test will not tell WHICH ancestor had the "UFO chromosome," there are several ways to identify that ancestor. For those ancestors to conceal their identity: 1. They moved every few years, never spending long at one location. 2. They were the only person of that surname in the county. 3. The county clerk who was also an alien, assured that your ancestor's marriage bond would "accidentally" be lost, their deeds set aside and never recorded, and their entire probate file would turn up "missing" even though indexes say it once existed. 4. The census taker would either not list them, OR he would list them twice, with sleight differences, causing quarrels among descendants whether they are the same person or not. 5. The family Bible was sent "west" with the youngest unmarried daughter, where she married a "Mr. Smith." 6. The family cemetery was sold to outsiders, who used the headstones to make a sidewalk. 7. The church they joined did not believe in recording vital statistics. 8. They started rumors of how they were related to someone famous, causing descendants to search the wrong family. 9. They started rumors of how they were born in England, arrived in Virginia with two brothers (one of whom was born in France, the other in Sweden). To conceal their identity, one brother moved to Georgia, the other to Maine, while they remained in Virginia. 10. And, when all else failed and they were about to be discovered, the county court house would "accidentally" burn. If you can prove your ancestor was beamed down by aliens, Halbert's of Bath, Ohio has recently prepared a family history of the Alien family, complete with the Alien coat of arms, which you will be proud to display over your fireplace. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Hi, Yesterday, my mother showed me a very interesting book about Caswells. Caswell, Maryanne (compiled by Grace Lane) 1964 Pioneer Girl McGraw-Hill Company of Canada Limited: Toronto This book contains letters from Maryanne to her Grandmother Caswell in Pinkerton, ON describing the trip to Saskatoon, Clarkes Crossing, SK. settleing there. Her uncles, John (w. Patience from Cherokee Iowa, s. Albert)), Robert-Rob-(w. Frankie Irvine, s. Wallace) and Joe had gone ahead to Clarkes Crossing (1883) with the Temperance Colonization Society (1882 went from Moose Jaw, end of the rail, 200 miles north to found Saskatoon)). Her father, John (w. Mary Martin) (c. Maryanne,1873,-Mrs. Thomas Hilliard-, Martha, Jen, Andrew, John and Mabel) came later from Palmerston with his family to join his brothers. Mention of saying goodbye at the Palmerston station to the Knowles, Alexanders, Watts and Fawcetts. Mention of Alex Caswell who had a grey mare on the mission field in Dakota, the same grey mare carried Uncle Joe in rebellion times in 1885 to Battleford from Saskatoon with a message. A cousin Tom is mentioned as being the city solicitor for Orangeville. Mention is made of Aunt Mary (Martin)'s sister(?), Aunt Catherine and cousin Mac, at Burnside station. Mention is made of Uncle Ronald Martin' widow and children at Portage La Prairie. Mention of an Uncle Will Ross. Now how do I fit into all this? I am not sure, but my Caswell connections originate in Palmerston, ON. These are my Caswells. Maryanne Caswell (who married George Hilliard) is my first cousin twice removed. John J. Caswell married Patience Ethel Smith. They are my great grandparents. I don't however see any connection. (Not that that necessarily means anything.) I know of two more Caswell researchers in my line and I will forward your letter to them, but there are at least 2 other Canadian Caswell researchers on the list that don't connect here as well. I have this information that was sent to me not too long ago. They also has our Benjamin Franklin Caswell born in 1825. It lists his father with an "N" . Does anyone know what this means? Below is the information that was sent to us. I poked around some of my CDs and the only thing I found that was close was in the CD Massachusetts Vital Records, 1600s-1900s (FTM CD #220) and I found a reference to a Benjamin F. Caswell's in the records of New Bedford with a date of May 25, 1825 - the record seems to be partly taken from newspaper and grave records - this is from the abbreviations used in the listing. It states "Father /N (IN LOT WITH ELIZA A. 1822) /NGR 3 - I think that may refer to Oak Grove Cemetery in New Bedford. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

This lists our Benjamin Franklin Caswell as being born in 1825 and we have it as 1828. This first family is our relative. Does anyone have a Benjamin Franklin Caswell born in 1828 or 1825 in MA? After reading the letter from Gertrude Caswell Kimzy about Benjamin's Franklin Caswell that was born May 22, 1828 in MA and then later lived in Georgia Heard County ...family I don't think that he was married before after carefully reading her letter. However, there is something missing as to who Benjamin Franklin's parents were. I'm looking at the letter and Gertrude lists the children of Benjamin and Charity Ann Jackson Caswell's. She also lists the children of Benjamin Franklin Caswell's oldest son...Noah Thomas Caswell who married Martha Jane Crouch in Alabama. (the grandchildren of Benjamin Franklin Caswell and Charity Ann Jackson Caswell through their oldest son Noah Thomas Caswell) They are... George Thomas Caswell born Feb. 9, 1875 died Sept. 18, 1961 Frenchie Beatrice Caswell born Jan. 21, 1877 died March 29, 1965 Alma L. Caswell born April 30, 1878 died Sept. 5, 1932 Cora Lee Caswell born Nov. 17, 1882 died Oct. 13, 1883 Benjamin Franklin Caswell born Dec. 13, 1883 died Sept. 4, 1937 Noah Zacharias Caswell born April 22, 1886 died April 15, 1965 All of these lived in Alabama. Gertrude also lists some O' Neals. The daughter of Benjamin Franklin Caswell and Charity Ann Caswell that was named Ida Lavina Caswell married Jack A. O'Neal. She lsits all of them. Maybe there's a way that we can get this letter copied and on file so that we can send this ot to the lists. This may help us to piece some things together for some folks. Janey is correct when she says that our Benjamin Franklin Caswell was not married before he married Charity Ann Jackson. I was wondering if it could be possible due to the fact that we have not found certain information about Ben's parents. >From: [email protected] (janie widemon) >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [CASWELL list] Ben F Caswell Connection..cfc >Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 14:48:39 -0500 (CDT) > >i think charity was benjamin, s 1st wife, because i have a copy of a >letter writen by benjamin,s grandaughter, and she list all the children >.the oldest born 1852. there was 12 in all. the marriage date unkown. >let me know what you think > > >==== CASWELL Mailing List ==== >See the Wiltshire CASWELL family tree >www.redsuspenders.com/~caswell/caswell > _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Could it be M. E.? Methodist Episcopal? Connie ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, April 15, 2001 7:38 PM Subject: [CASWELL list] Caswell--M.A. & R.I. later 1800s, early 1900s I've been looking for my Caswell side (MA and R.I.). Thanks to many people, both offlist and on, especially one who has been pouring over the Attleboro, Taunton and Middleborough records, here's what I know so far. Thanks!! Herbert A. Caswell and Mary E. White are my gg-grandparents. Herbert A. Caswell, son of William H. Caswell and Sarah M. Macomber, was born in 1862, in Taunton, MA. He married Mary E. White, (b. 1863/4, in Johnston, R.I.) daughter of Samuel White--a Civil War veteran and Julia Hicks. Mary was said to be part Native American, but so far, I have not found proof. Not known if it was supposed to be Samuel's side or Julia's. Herbert A. Caswell and Mary E. White were married in Attleboro Feb. 23, 1882. They were married in M. C. Church in Attleboro. ((Does anyone know what church M.C. Church is?)) Children of Herbert A. Caswell and Mary E. White 1) Irving (born Elwin) Elsworth Caswell, b.12 September 1883 MA 2) Adriana Gertrude Caswell b. 8 September 1885 MA (may have died in childhood, not listed on later census) 3) Elmora/Eldora E. Caswell, b. May 1886, MA 4) Laura A. Caswell b. February 1888, MA 5) Wm. A.Caswell b. 20 February 1890, (died from mumps in Norton, MA 12 July 1890 at 4 mos. 22 days) 6) Frederick H. Caswell, b. April 1891, MA 7) Allan L. Caswell, b. July 1892, MA Mary may have died in 1894. On December 25, 1899 Herbert married an Amelia E. b.9/1876, MA. The "Florence" listed as one of Herbert's daughters may be hers. Here is Herbert's obituary from the Attleboro Sun, 1915: Herbert A. Caswell, assistant supervisor of streets, a well known and respected resident of this city, died Wednesday night in the Strudy Memorial Hospital after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Caswell was 53 years of age and had lived in Attleboro for the past 45 years. He was born in East Taunton. Besides a wife, Mr. Caswell is survived by two brothers, William and Edward Caswell, both of this city: two sisters, Mrs. Nellie Reynolds of this city and Mrs. Elmora Simmonds of Taunton: three sons, Fred, Alan, and Irving, and, three daughters, Elmora, Laura and Florence. The funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from the late residence, 25A Bank St. and burial will be in Woodlawn. If ANYONE is related to the following people, or these names have come up in your research, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks!!! I noticed in the recent posting of Caswell wills that the surname Rowberry or one of its derivatives was in one of the wills I have copied the below for the chap who posted the wills sorry to do it on list but unfortunately I lost my record of who sent it to the list Cheers Paul (Caswell descendant) (Caswell Rowberry connection) Hi Paul Many thanks for spotting that R reference and even more for passing it on. I am writing this in Toronto, so cannot refer to my database to see if I know anything about Edward. Perhaps you could explain to the person who sent in the transcript that I am away from home until mid-June, but if he likes to contact me after that I will see what I can tell him about Edward or possibly about any CASWELL contacts.
