Does anyone know when Castle Garden closed? Did Ellis Island become the main Immigration Center after the former closed? Or did they exist at the same time? Sonja

Castle Garden operated from 8/1/1855 until 4/18/1890. The Barge Office took over from 4/19/1890 until 12/31/1891, and Ellis Island opened 1/1/1892 until the fire of 6/13/1897. Again the Barge Office opened from 6/14/1897 until EI was repaired and re-opened on 12/17/1900.
