He was about 18 at the time of his rather sudden departure from Danzig. His father was a prominent architect in Danzig and Rudolph was the eldest son. It was expected that he go into the military. Rudolph, on the other hand apparently liked to drink and frequently proclaimed "Down with the Kaiser!" His father put him on the first boat available. Family story is that it was a cattle boat. From other research, I get the idea that cattle was frequently shipped to Europe and the return trip took the emigrants from Europe at fares less than steerage. The years 1850-1851 are giving me trouble because either the records begin too late or at the bottom of the project list and may be picked up in the future. I'll just keep looking. John Kracha
