    3. Hello Ruth, I'm pretty green at travel details myself. My best guess would be that the reason there are two ports of embarkation listed pertains to the ship taking on passengers (not referring to the individual passenger as having 2 points of embarkation). Clara Kies was not listed on my disk, but that does not mean that she was not on the ship. There are many, many names on the disks that are filled in in with question marks because they were illegible to the transcriber (example: K???, C.). As you can see, this could have been your Clara. Unless gender was included on the transcription, you would have to jump way out in left field to believe this was definitely her. If you are fairly sure that this John Dietrich is your man... send to NARA for the ship transcript and read thru to see if you can locate Clara. If they were traveling together, they would most likely be listed on the same page (she would most likely be listed on the line above or below him). It will only cost you $17 to find out. If you order the "entire" ship's manifest, it could get spendy. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Ruthfam@aol.com> To: <CASTLE-GARDEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 30, 2002 8:20 PM Subject: [CASTLE-GARDEN] Re: CASTLE-GARDEN-D Digest V02 #101 Pasenger's Name: John Ch. It said Port of Embarkation was Liverpool & Queenstown, but he must have come from Germany. Where would he have left Germany, and why would he have two embarkations in England? I know you don't really know, but do you have any ideas? Also, Clara Kies, was with him, was she listed on the records? I understand they got married aboard ship. I'm just beginning to learn about emigration lists, so I'd appreciate any help anyone has to offer. Thanks a lot, Sandra Ruth

John and Clara (KIES) DIETRICH came to America about 1878-1880. John was about 31 and Clara about 18-19. They got married aboard ship, but I don't know the port they sailed from, or the exact year. They settled in Far Rockaway at first, and had three children born in New York City before moving to Narrowsburg NY and then to Scranton, PA. One of them was born in Woodside Heights, NY. His name was listed as Martin W. Ditrich (incorrectly spelled). I believe another son, John, was born in Greenpoint or Greenport, NY. I've been looking for 50 years, and can't find their entry into the US anywhere. They were not at Ellis Island, because they came before 1890. John Sr. may have come from Mainz or Koblenz, Germany. Clara Kies came from Kreuznach, Germany. A son by John's first marriage came over later. His name was Frank Dietrich, which was his grandfather's name also. I would be so grateful for any info - I'm really stumped! Ruth

I am searching for a patrick/pat DOWLING or DOLAN who came to the u.s in the year 1851 from ireland re: U.S. census (it was written in under year immigrated.) B 1837 so he would have been 13 or 14 yrs old in 1851. He was born in queens co, now called laios. The unique thing about searching for my husbands gr grandfather is he had a brother named Edward/Ed DOWLING or DOLAN. He was b 1847 so he was only about 4 yrs. of age in 1851. This brother edward was handicap in some way and re: u.s. census always lived with patrick his whole life, eventually in death he was living with a maiden daughter, of patrick a mary dowling.again census said he also came here in 1851. I assume he and patrick were together!. Their mother didnt show up until 1880 census. so I am not sure they came here together, and I didnt find their father also named Edward/Edmond in u.s. census at all, unless I have him confused with his son, in some way, since edward was handicap, this could have been an error on my part. I wrote DOWLING or DOLAN because in census the census taker sometimes spelt it DOLAN, so My thought was maybe the captain made this mistake as well. Thank you so much if you could do a look up , and if not I truely apologize. Thank you, Sincerely dawn dowling mizzou@mcmsys.com

My GGparents both came from Germany, I believe in the mid 1800's. His name, according to his oldest daughter was Karl Johan Dickhoff originally and he was probably born about 1835 in Prussia. I have found him in some New York City Directories as John Dickhoff. Her name was Anna Margaret Beimler and she was born 25 Mar 1855 in Bavaria. Based on my Grandmothers date of birth, they were probably married in 1874 or 1875 in New York. Do either of these names show up in your CD's. Thanks for your help. Pat C
