    3. Castle Garden operated from 8/1/1855 until 4/18/1890. The Barge Office took over from 4/19/1890 until 12/31/1891, and Ellis Island opened 1/1/1892 until the fire of 6/13/1897. Again the Barge Office opened from 6/14/1897 until EI was repaired and re-opened on 12/17/1900. EI then continued until 1924. ----- Original Message ----- From: <JKill0343@aol.com> To: <CASTLE-GARDEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 30, 2002 11:39 AM Subject: [CASTLE-GARDEN] Date of Closure > Does anyone know when Castle Garden closed? He was about 18 at the time of his rather sudden departure from Danzig. His father was a prominent architect in Danzig and Rudolph was the eldest son. It was expected that he go into the military. Rudolph, on the other hand apparently liked to drink and frequently proclaimed "Down with the Kaiser!" His father put him on the first boat available. Family story is that it was a cattle boat. From other research, I get the idea that cattle was frequently shipped to Europe and the return trip took the emigrants from Europe at fares less than steerage. The years 1850-1851 are giving me trouble because either the records begin too late or at the bottom of the project list and may be picked up in the future. I'll just keep looking. John Kracha

    3. Hello Joan, I ran through both of the Germans to America CDs and found no KINANs at all. There was only the original 1852 CANANs (C. and Sophia) on the first disk. Perhaps someone has a disk containing passenger information for Irish to America Immigrants. Sorry I couldn't be of help. Since I received the information about THOMAS CANAN from you, I have three new censuses and different dates (he gets younger as the years passed). The new immigration years are 1870, 1880, and 1882. You had previously searched your1850-1874 CD (he wasn't there) and Ancestry. I tried all the on-line searches and found one in 1846-1851passenger lists. Too early. I tried name variations, and one showed a THOMAS KINAN in the 1880's. Believe it or not, this is the name-pronunciation. You have helped me so much with your past lookup, I would appreciate any aid you can provide. Thank you.
