This a long shot for me for I have hit a brick wall as to when my ancestors came to America from UK My Gfather --George Scales in his nat. papers, states he came to the US on May 1886 from Barnsley England[Yorkshire Co.]. I've checked alot on that date but to no avail. In checking the US census for 1900 1910, I find that my father states he came here in 1887-- this a comment my sister remembers dad saying, that he remembered going fishing from the boat on his 10 b'day--- which is 24 Nov 1877. Then I find in the same census that his sister[my aunt] who is 4 yrs older than my father, states she came in 1888. If you could check for me. I would be very appreciative--- George and Mary Wright Scales [my Gparents] Sadia b. 1874 George Aylmer b. 1877[my father] Eldred b. 1882 Nora b. 1884 Many thanks to you for any info you can provide or any direction you may suggest

It seems that all of them were "returning to country of origin". Perhaps the ship passengers were suffering from some dreadful fever or plague. Sometimes the CD transcription notes that a passenger died on board. No record of such was noted for these individuals. Due to the poor job done transcribing the above records, it would be best for you to order the ship transcripts to verify your information. 3. Hi, I have been searching forever (or so it seems) for Francis (or Franz) SALZMANN. His exact d.o.b. is unknown, but I've located him as an adult in New York City in 1888. He's believed to be from Hessen, although Alsace-Lorraine could also be a possibility. Also, Augusta Salzmann, possibly his sister, was married in New York City in 1887 and is believed to have come to this country about 1884. Any information on either person would be so appreciated. Thank you.. Dorothy Colwell paws@nqi.net

I thought it was Philadelphia because is daughter Caroline was born there in 1848 and his son Henry was born there in 1850. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advanced. Sam

    3. Hi Barbara, There were no listings for any Hickman or Hinkmann on either of the Germans to America CDs. I checked Hinckman(n), Hinckeman(n) and Hinkeman(n) with no results. The closest I could find in spelling to your guy was a 40-year old Friedrich Hinckelmann who ended up in Illinois on May 24, 1884 with his wife Rosa and their 3 children under the age of 3. It is my understanding that these CD transcriptions cover ships that carried at least 80% German immigrants. You may have to turn your search toward written texts and/or microfilmed passenger lists. Sorry I couldn't help. All I know is that he came from Germany in either 1887 or 1888. I have had him researched in Germans To America twice, and he is not there. Would some kind soul be able to look up my CASPER in the Castle Gardens records? I would be so grateful for any information on him. Their answer was due to the large numbers of unidexed microfilms, that I would have to either provide them with the exact date of arrival or narrow it down to within one week, in order for them to search. Of course, this was a few years ago. They may have changed their requirements since then. I would also be interested to hear their answer! Take care, Tracy

    3. I'm not sure just how far they'll go, Marilyn. I 'do' know that they have searched for naturalization papers for me within a few year time frame, then sent me 'all' the natz papers they found for the names I submitted and enclosed a bill for $10. Whether or not they do the same for manifests, I can't say. You might want to check out their website at www.nara.gov to see if there's any info on this. Oh, and if they 'will' do this I'm interested as well. You (and I, heheh) need to narrow down our ancestor's arrival year through census records, City Directories, family lore/papers, etc. Then we have to pore through reel after reel after reel after reel of microfilm looking at the manifests of 'every' ship which arrived in whatever time frame we isolate.
