I am looking for information on my great-grandparents Michael McGuire and Catherine Mahon who arrived, separately, at Castle Garden from Ireland. I believe that Michael came from Sligo or Mayo and that Catherine came from Roscommon. It is also my belief that both were minors when they arrived. Thank you!
Would SKS do a look-up for me and hopefully help me break through what now is my "steel wall". I have tried every possible means to find the passenger list entry for my Irish Immigrant, found all of his sons. First record for Richard Mullally is in the 1860 Federal Census for Cayuga Co., NY, one son immigrated in 1848, the other three in 1857, all shortly thereafter settled in or near Aurora, Cayuga Co., NY. I am assuming the year/years of immigration for Richard Mullally would have been between 1857-1860. The others departed from the Port of Liverpool, Eng. and arrived at Port of NYCity. Thank You In Advance, Judith B.

I found a long time ago that it is always good to keep my options open while searching for family. Depending on the source of the information one receives, there could be errors in age or arrival year (i.e. family lore vs. actual documentation of papers etc). Example: my current approach in my own case . I have a typewritten family history that was done in 1953 that has been handed down to me. In it is the story of my gr-grandfather coming to the US from Ireland in 1865. The way I figure it, there is a possibility that there could be a 'typo' or maybe the person who passed the information down from over 135 yrs ago had it wrong by a year or two. -- I do, however, have two 'sure things.' Based on his age on his gravestone he was born in 1844. His first child was born here in the US in Nov 1866. - I now have to find his marriage record. If they were married in Ireland (say 1864) then I know I have a 2 year 'window' to look in. Or if they were married in the US, I would know to look for arrivals before that date. Guess that will keep me busy with the 29 pages of Thomas CULLEN arrivals that I now have, thanks to the wonderful generousity of the people on this list! :o) I will keep all these names even if they aren't mine as there may be a 'cousin' in the future looking for someone........ hopefully I will be able to help someone with the info. I don't mean to single you out here, Diane ...... I just used your message to try to convey a point that I learned a long time ago. You may very well have absolute documention of your information. It was very common for the Irish to use a 'naming pattern' for their children based on the order of their birth.... this can be a big help to identify members of a particular family. If anyone is interested in this, let me know. You never know.....if you find a cousin of the grandparents you are looking for, their family may just have the information you need. -- Thanks again to all those who helped me with my search.
