With Maureen's blessing, I will be sending through a transcription of a special report from the "Irish-American" newspaper (from New York City) on the 1857 wreck of a ship, Central America. The paper did *not* give details as to where she was bound when she wrecked. Also, when the paper was originally microfilmed, portions of the article were cut off. I apologize for this beforehand. However, it does make some interesting reading. After the article (which will come in two parts due to length), lists of survivors and those missing will be sent through. Thank you for your patience, Tracy

I could not find your Mr. McGourty on Germans to America CDs 1850-1874 or 1875-1888. Sorry. Patrick McGourty. He was born in 1850 and family lore says he came as 'a young man, about 17'. (Thus 1867). His death certificate would indicate he came in January of 1866. The 1920 census states he immigrated in 1872 and was naturalized in 1876. He married in May of 1880 in Iowa so that gives a definitive end date for possible passenger lists. I have searched the 1872 passenger lists for NY; Jan-May of 1866NY; Jan-June 1867NY; soundexed passenger lists for Boston, Philadelphia with no luck. I would presume he arrived on the east coast as he connected with other McGourty family cousins in Wilkes-Barre before heading west to Iowa. Anyone here with access to CD's? Any ideas, suggestions, help? Thank You, Margaret Merrill

Not all people that came over did so as a (paying) passenger. In my research I have come across several ways that people came over without appearing on passenger lists. 1. Stow away 2. Hired on as a sailor , staying behind in the Country of choice. 3. Merchant , sailed with his family on his companies own (freight) ship. 4. Recruited ; shipping companies paid people to find suitable people to work on their ships. Sometimes these recruiters used deceiving methods to trick people into signing on as sailors. Men looking for work were promised a job after they signed a contract and where told to report for work at a certain place . Only then to find out that they were going to sea. The fact that most of these men couldn't read or write didn't matter. Ofcourse after arriving in the first harbor they ran away , and disappeared into the crowd. 5. False names. People changed their names for what ever reason. I am sure there will be more ways of getting across the ocean without appearing on any official document. Peter!!!!!!
Hello Marie, I use these web sites for my research and I purchase CDs with passenger lists on them which I use to do free lookups for people. I could try to locate your young ladies for you on my disks if you can send me their names (and any other info you think would help me to pinpoint them). Sandra, The list of Wunderlichs did not have my GGfather. BUT another on this list found a directory that listed him in 1878 in Highland Falls as Charles Wunderlich a carpenter. Since my GGGrandfather was a cabinetmaker at WestPoint, I believe this is him. Could you see if you can find a Charles Wunderlich on your passenger discs. Thanks so much...I feel a few bricks falling from the wall after all these yrs. I'm so excited. Betty

Hi Sandra, Thanks so much for the lookup for Bernt Andreas BERNTSEN. Unfortunately, none of them are mine. This particular individual has been my mystery man.
